Day 48: Sun Room [Second Shift]

Mar 07, 2010 11:32

Hmph. While this Rude was the proverbial "man of few words," von Karma found more potential use from him than a number of the other patients he had met put together. He would still ask Franziska about the man... as well as the other people he had learned that she had been spending time around. Many of them were utter fools, especially that ( Read more... )

Normally Ayumu was awake well before the nurse arrived to fetch her in the morning; after years of rising before the sun she simply couldn't sleep late, nor could she sleep when someone was in the room with her. And yet this morning she awoke to find a nurse shaking her shoulder and had to quickly supress the immediate impulse to fight back. The nurse just chuckled at how her patient had started awake, chiding her for being a "sleepyhead" and missing breakfast.

She'd missed breakfast? Slept through an entire shift, only to be forced awake, without doing so at the mere sound of footsteps outside her door? Impossible, completely impossible, which hinted at interference from the Institute itself. Well did she recall the day spent believing herself to be another, and none of that pleased her at all.

It left her in a somewhat pensive mood as she was led to the Sun Room, and when the nurse started to offer her a coat, chattering about how cold it was outside, Ayumu shook her head and quietly asked to stay indoors today. The excuse of not feeling well seemed to work, and the nurse patted her on the shoulder (and again the kunoichi had to suppress the impulse for violence; her temper was certainly off today) before bustling off with the coat again. Ayumu watched her go for a moment before turning back to the room proper.

After a brief survey of those present, she drifted as though by chance over to the bulletin, toward the young man standing there. "You're not pleased, now that you've found what you were searching for?" she asked once close enough, keeping her voice quiet to deter eavesdropping, but her smile was friendly.

Heiji looked over at the quiet, familiar voice. She had a nice smile, definitely. It at least encouraged him to smile back.

"Sometimes... the truth isn' what we want it t'be," Heiji said simply. "I'd prefer goin' back t'Kenren-han with somethin' more concrete than, 'We're pretty sure it was this guy, 'n he's been released so there's really no way t'get any kinda solid proof 'r confession'. I mean... th'guy killed his friend.

"But," Heiji rolled his shoulders in a half-shrug, half-stretch. "S'not like this is somethin' new 'n diff'rent. I've been on all sortsa cases where th'truth just wasn' nice 'n easy."

"Mm. No. Sometimes the truth isn't at all easy." Ayumu laced her fingers behind her back in an idle-seeming gesture, turning to look at the bulletin again. To the casual observer, she might have been only peripherally interested in the conversation with the young man, with most of her attention on reading. "But I've always thought that knowing the truth is worthwhile, simply because it is the truth. Even if it's difficult or painful."

As evidenced by her newfound knowledge of what was to come for the Shinsengumi. It was unpleasant, certainly; just her awareness of Susumu's fate (if she nor Okita managed to return and change it, that was) had caused a shameful loss of control on her part. When she had attacked Himura, though, it hadn't been a denial of truth, but rather a reaction to it. She still would rather know.

Her gaze paused briefly at a post with Honey's name on it, specifically the part addressed to "Sen-nee." That was...interesting, but she forced herself to look away again. "And at least now you can move on to something else, right?"

"Yeah," Heiji said, stretching his arms above his head to work out some of the tension in his back. He had, after all, just woken up. The shower had brushed the cobwebs out of his mind, but he was still a little stiff from sitting in such a hunched position and perusing files all night. "'S prob'ly why I haven' moved on t'doin' somethin' else, even if I'm faced with cases that aren' so pretty. The truth's the truth, and there's somethin'... I dunno, triumphant about pullin' it outta the fog 'n lies." Heiji shrugged.

"No doubt Kudou's happy 'bout closin' it, though. We've never dealt with a case that had such a wide range'a suspects--or a case that had no freakin' evidence b'sides the body. He was prob'ly as frustrated's I was."

Which might explain Shinichi's desire to jump on Kaito thinking he was Kid, but Heiji wanted to treat that like water under a bridge. They'd apologized, they'd moved on. Heiji really didn't want to know why Shinichi thought Kaito was kid--he might start believing him.

Ayumu laughed softly and glanced sidelong at Heiji, looking somewhat amused. "I think it's quite impressive that you managed to take an investigation with so little available information and find the one you were looking for. It's something you can be proud of, Heiji-han."

She personally had little doubt that the suspect they'd found was truly the one responsible -- all of the facts fit, after all. It was a little disappointing that the man had already vanished before anything could be done about it, but still, it meant that anyone else still remaining would be cleared of suspicion. Sometimes it was nice to know who you could trust, even just a little.

"Yeah, well..." Heiji said, feeling himself blush. Impressive. Eat that, Kudou. "Any great detective would've done th'same. I mean, even if we're inna war-zone so t'speak, runnin' around killin' people f'r no reason 'cept psychosis, isn' right. 'Specially when we can' afford t'turn on one another, yeah?

"All of us," Heiji shoved his hands into his pockets, mind skipping back to Kaitou Kid. "We're a team. We gotta be, otherwise how c'n we get out if we're doin' nothin' but fightin' amongst ourselves?"

He wondered what Shinichi had spoken to Kid about, now. They'd spoken after all, it couldn't have been the classic back-and-forth 'Imma get you!' 'No you're not, lol!' stuff that seemed to happen on a regular basis between them. Maybe they'd formed a pact...?

"This... is gonna sound totally out of left-field, but... d'you know anythin' 'bout a guy callin' 'imself Kaitou Kid?"

"Well, if any great detective would have done the same thing, then perhaps that means you're on the same level as one." The corners of Ayumu's smile quirked up a little more, halfway teasing and halfway serious. It really had been like searching for one tiny minnow in a vast pond, and yet they'd managed. Judging from her interactions with the two boys so far, they were intelligent enough, and headed in the right direction. They just needed a bit more experience.

She nodded agreement at the comment which followed, her expression turning a little more thoughtful as she turned back to the bulletin. While she agreed that infighting was generally unproductive in a situation like this (except in...certain circumstances), she rather doubted that it was possible for everyone present to be a "team" in truth. There were certain people that even she was unwilling to work with, after all, and...well. At least he changed the subject quickly.

"Kaitou Kid?" she repeated slowly, as though considering the words. "No, I don't believe I've ever heard that name before."
