Day 48: Courtyard

"I could tell you some stories," Yuffie suggested brightly, "of unquestionable legality." Illegality, that was. Petty little things like the law didn't usually mean very much to her, except for the times when she had to uphold it. Always fun for the breaking, though, the law, and messy for the clean-up. Just the way she liked it ( Read more... )

Sheena did not let go of Neku's hand until they got outside and she realized she was, in fact, still holding it. And dragging him. The ninja cast a nervous look around the courtyard, but it was thankfully youkai-free. She was pretty sure Yukari would stay inside, especially with as chilly as it was, but she couldn't be too careful.

Turning to Neku, she stared at him a moment. "Um... yeah... so... I verified it. Third floor is pretty much magically off-limits," she said, having fished for a topic that was not youkai related.

Sheena was the last thing he'd expected, and while he tugged and pulled against her grip, she was pretty damn strong for a girl. Must be some crossbreed of gorilla. He jerked it angrily free once they were outside and he was well and fully freezing his ass off.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" he asked, hardly hearing a word she'd said. It didn't help that his headphones were so loud, one could almost make out Brahms' rhapsody in E flat just standing near him. Without another word he started storming off further into the courtyard, arms crossed.

"Both of us should not be in that room, Neku," Sheena replied, following along. "I don't know what happened to you, but I know what the 'I'm going to go get myself sedated' stalk looks like."

"You'll thank me later." A pause. "Okay, you won't, I'll still be right. You need to learn to pick and choose your fights here and leave them until night."

Both of us? What did she know? Her words barely made it through the headphones. What exactly was she saying? That he should just wait until night started and then go after the guy?

"He killed one of my friends last night," Neku growled, finally slowing, but still hardly approachable. He'd been bragging about it. Posting those stupid bulletin messages. Neku wanted to cram them down the bastard's throat.

Sheena stopped for a brief second upon hearing that, eyes wide with surprise, before she caught up.

"Are you sure he died?" She blinked. "Look, it's not that I don't believe you, but this place seems to make death not as permanent as it normally is."

Was he sure? He looked at her, almost shocked that she'd even ask. What the hell?! Of course he was sure!

"He died right in front of me!" Neku blurted. "That math freak Sho blew us up with some weird contraption he made! How do you think I got like this?"

He raised his arms to show her the injuries and tried to force himself to calm down. He shouldn't be so upset, he knew it, but maybe it was this whole place, this whole setting was so different from the UG, it felt like it was impossible to even try winning this game.

"Oh.. I'm sorry, Neku," Sheena replied, momentary horror at what the teen witnessed clear on her face. "It's never easy to see friends die," she added on quietly, her thoughts naturally turning to Corrine.

"Take a deep breath..."

It took a few moments for him to regain his usual composure, his expression falling into one of careful indifference. He almost snapped again when she apologized; sorry wasn't going to bring anyone back. But it wasn't Sheena's fault. Sheena was trying to help. He ran a hand through his spiky, still-wet hair and found himself doing as she said.

After letting out a few choice curses under his breath, he did feel better, or, if not better, at least like he was thinking a little clearer.

"I'm really starting to hate this place," he said finally.

"You should," Sheena stated. "It's a human ranch. They're horrific places. "

She paused a moment. "Even if there are more than just humans held here with us."
