Day 48: Courtyard

"I could tell you some stories," Yuffie suggested brightly, "of unquestionable legality." Illegality, that was. Petty little things like the law didn't usually mean very much to her, except for the times when she had to uphold it. Always fun for the breaking, though, the law, and messy for the clean-up. Just the way she liked it ( Read more... )

After breakfast, Renamon was in an odd place. Normally, the Digimon would retire to the sun room, check the bulletin board and go over what was known and what had to be done. Her nurse today, was having none of it.

"These activities are set up so you are able to enjoy a balanced schedule," the woman had said. "So you can't choose to not participate in every shift."

Renamon had quietly disagreed to herself. And outside of all places, especially during the day, had nothing held for her. She shifted her notebook under her arm, annoyed. Despite her extreme lack of amusement, she still found herself pushed into the courtyard. How... "fun." Against the building, she crossed her arms, pushing the notebook against her chest, staring neutrally out at the scenery. At the least, she could consider new ways to approach things.

If his hair hadn't already went white, Venom would have been concerned for its color after that conversation. Alkaid had drive, yes. She was determined and single-minded, which had its merits. There was no doubt of her strength and what she could do if she put her mind to it, but the problem was getting her there. Whatever logical argument he would give, she would immediately assume he was talking about fantasies and derive false impressions from it, which was not only naive but also dangerous. He had to spell things out for her and even then she would miss the mark. Even in the middle of battle, she could (at least from the little he saw) lose focus and become a liability if left on her own ( ... )

The Digimon was not so preoccupied as to not take notice of the man approaching, led by a nurse. His appearance was far more strange than the majority of those she had met, yet she, of all beings, wasn't one to judge on that alone. Once the man took note of her, he bowed. Hm. She had met nearly none that retained that habit. Renamon bowed her head in return.

His question amused her more than she'd admit. As well as a similar habit, it seemed he, too, had an inclination to pass social niceties and get straight to the point. After last shift, there was nothing in her that wasn't pleased by this. "Over two weeks," she answered blandly. "And you?"

"Six days." While his voice did nothing to hide his irritation at that fact, it was surprisingly pleasant to have someone immediately answer him without having to be stubborn about it beforehand. After having to deal with nothing but cold indifference or far too much excitability (or Bridget. A part of him worried for the boy - the rest hoped he would learn to answer a question without it being a vague and unhelpful response), those simple three words were a Godsend.

If it were not for the aggravation of being away from the Guild or his plain inability to process good cheer, Venom would be smiling right now.

Being able to discuss something like this so easily was reminding him of business as usual. His fingers were itching to hold onto his missing briefcase and they curled themselves tighter around his journal in said briefcase's absence. "And I don't suppose you've made any sort of progress in regard to this situation, have you?"

It seemed those who had been here long was more strange than not. It twisted something to think that she had been here longer than most. Should she be thankful for that? Though she couldn't truly think that those that vanished simply returned as if nothing happened. But she couldn't know. She didn't know.

Progress was a completely different point. The Digimon shifted her weight, considering this. "Nothing entirely useful," she admitted bluntly. "Myself and mine still do not know why we are here, how we are brought here, or what we could do to escape. We have theories, contrived from data, but nothing absolute." She paused. "I do know some, however. Where do your interest lie?"

Again with that answer... It was the same one he had been given by Yohji and various others and, unfortunately, the exact same answer he had for himself. No progress, only theories. It was pathetic. How could anyone stand knowing they had spent days, weeks, months at a time in this prison and have made absolutely no stride at all? He knew by now that it was easier said than done to even pull the knot that was this looming dilemma, but that did nothing to stop his ever growing frustration ( ... )

[ahhh, sorry for fail and lateness. T_T]

The Digimon showed no reaction to the belated introduction, merely added her own. "I am Renamon." As for the other things he said she found herself in circles she had passed. The 'who's'' had been considered, as they were, and passed on. She tilted her head. "Supposedly this place is government and military funded, but that seems a little too simple for the scale of the matter."

It was hard to find someone that didn't want to destroy the place. Renamon didn't disagree. But she did not want to blindly destroy all of it. They needed to learn how it worked, filter the knowledge and try to use as much as possible to reverse some of the effects done. If everything was destroyed, they would be stuck here. She was almost sure of it.

But that was shifted aside momentarily. She blinked at his declaration of knowledge, curious. "You say you know? What is it that you've found?"

Venom held a hand up in front of himself, almost like he were commanding the woman to stop speaking (which he was. It was a bad habit). "That isn't what I meant." He should have phrased that better, maybe. Maybe he was still feeling too ill to properly convey anything right now, if that conversation with Alkaid told him anything. That didn't mean he wasn't going to try, however. Strangers or no, he still needed all the help he could find. If Renamon knew something, anything... "I don't mean what as in who. I mean what as in what - what is running this place," he clarified as he shifted his weight to his right leg and his arms folded up to cross with the notebook over his chest. The change in position parted his hair just enough to watch her with one visible eye. "They're using some sort of tools to keep us here and maintain this system that they've set up. I want to know what it is that they're using ( ... )

She watched the man without reaction to his interruption, following as he went on. Here was a topic with more comfort. "You'll hear different things from different people. Different ways to pull others from homes, and across realities. If you're looking for that, look for similarities in stories. Or otherwise." Look where no one else had. If that was even applicable. It was simple enough for things to change overnight--it would be simple enough to hide something from view. The fact remained what they were looking for could be in plain sight ( ... )
