Night 47: Doctor's Office #1 (Daedalus Yumeno)

Feb 16, 2010 20:11

[from here]Just as before, the office was fairly barren in furniture except for the impressive chair, the few pictures and the computer on the desk. Teresa swept her light around just to make sure before full moving into the room toward the desk. Again, she picked up one of the pictures of the dark-haired girl. Varying ages... whoever this girl ( Read more... )

Yumeno. There hadn't been much of use on the bulletin board about this one. Mello had been hoping for the slob, Venkman. He followed Teresa in and checked out the office in the sweep of her flashlight beam. The photographs were the only immediately apparent personal touch. Someone had described the doctor as young on the bulletin board, so the girl in the pictures was more likely his sister than his daughter. Not that it mattered. Mello didn't see anything that could tell them her name, or give any clue at all about what Yumeno might have used for a password. He felt the underside of the desk just in case: zip. Well, fuck. He set his pipe aside and hit the power button for the machine anyway. Might as well. He wasn't going to declare this hopeless yet, especially not out loud.

"What did your ally try when you were here before?"

"I did not understand what she was doing at the time, so I did not watch closely," Teresa replied, still looking at the youngest picture of the girl. "She did say she had limited knowledge on lock picking if that helps any."

It didn't help much. Most of Mello's experience was in cracking remote machines, with scripts he understood fairly well, but couldn't have written himself. Brute force on a personal computer? Not his forte. The main trick he knew was cold-booting, but the thing had been off for hours by now, and he didn't have an OS handy anyway. Mello huffed in annoyance after several unsuccessful tries at logging in, and whacked the keyboard with his fist, which at least made the fucking thing beep. "Goddammit, this is no good."

At the sound of Morgan striking the computer, Teresa looked over and raised an eyebrow. Someone wasn't happy. Understandable, but that was a childish way to handle the frustration.

"Do you believe these images hold the key?" She tilted her head toward the picture frame in her hand.

"No." Mello took a moment's break from glaring at the screen, at that damn log-in dialog taunting him, to glance at Teresa. "We need two keys for this, maybe more." He wondered if she would've busted the frame open if he'd said yes.

Fucking Landel's, he thought, for about the thousandth time, by his count. He needed to get outside, and see for himself how far he could go in what was left of the night.

Two or three keys? Someone didn't want idle hands on their precious property. Teresa sat the picture back down.

"Are you finished then?"

"Yeah, I'm done," Mello said disgustedly. If looks could've killed, the computer would have been a puddle of smoldering electronics by now. He retrieved the length of pipe from where he'd set it.

"I'm going to check out those ruins." Maybe he'd get lucky and run across something to beat the living crap out of on the way.

"And I shall be heading below," Teresa replied, leaving Morgan at the computer and walking to the door. She paused and looked back.

"Should you ever find someone here better than you at unlocking computers, perhaps we can try this again," she said before leaving the room.
