( where did my creativity go. )

The fight down the hallway was still going, and by the sounds of things not very well. She could hear yelling and a kind of crying sound, and the idea that it was something crying caused her to shudder and suddenly switch into a run, not wanting to hear it anymore.

As the ensign and the captain reached the landing of the stairs, the radio crackled to life and a strange message was played. Chekov had never experienced such a thing happening, and paused to listen and frown questioningly at Captain.

"What was zat message for, sir?"

Kirk was still staring at the radio in his hand, turning it over as if he expected to find some additional clue on the plastic surface. "It sounds like it was for us," he said, looking not a little disgruntled by this. More and more, their situation felt like a game, and the addition of Ms. Radio, even though she was ostensibly trying to help, only turned them into chess pieces between two faceless players. "The bulletin board mentioned a radio man who was the enemy of Landel, and this would be his successor, I guess. It sounds like these hints will lead to some sort of item that'll help us - or at least, that's what we're supposed to believe ( ... )

Yuna stopped when they reached the other hall. She didn't want to wonder if there would be a few less people at the dining hall tomorrow, but she did. She didn't even know which faces to check for.

Theoretically, ex-summoners could still perform Sendings. But even those were useless without a body. Yuna knew, intellectually, that the monsters weren't fiends-Kagura had said as much, even if Yuna had never explained. But she couldn't help herself from hoping-

"Sir Edgar, do you-do you think they'll be safe?"

Edgar stopped just short of Yuna, turning and looking toward the fight. From the other side of the hall, he could make out a man and a woman fighting the sword-laden monster. The figure at the center of the blades remained an enigma, the view obscured by the numerous weapons.

"I don't know, to tell the truth," he answered. "I do know that we'd be of no help unless properly armed, and attacking a monster like that with little more than a club would leave us open for defeat, and we'd be the ones who need the rescuing."

He watched for another moment. "It seems they're not giving up without a fight. I believe they'll be okay for now." That said, he turned from the scene, starting down the side passage.

Neku waited to make sure the others were following instead of just standing around waiting to make friends with Sparky, but was quick up the stairs, flashlight bouncing along as he tried to keep it steady and keep from freaking out himself. Looked like things were clear up here at least, though he could hear the sounds of a struggle going on below.

"I think we dodged the worst of it," he called back. "You guys still cool?"

"Mm, oh, I'm fine." Really, Joshua didn't understand why the other two were so upset. It wasn't like Joshua had given that thing the nickname, and it had been their choice to skirt past it. He just found it incredibly amusing that such a light-hearted name had been given to such a creature... and besides, he had faced worse.

For now, though, he ran a hand through his hair, frowning as he fell silent. Something was bothering him now... he hadn't paid attention to it, not when there were the other two to worry about and then that giant monster, but something definitely didn't feel right now. Felt like someone was dancing on his proverbial grave... hm. Maybe it was just nothing, but he still felt a little uneasy.

Leonard stopped at the entrance to the hall, turning and sweeping his light down the stairs, making sure that thing hadn't followed them. He thought he saw a brief glimpse of something on the steps, but looking again, there was nothing there. I'm being paranoid. No surprise, given what I just saw.

He turned back to the teens, who both seemed calm in spite of what they'd just faced. Leonard took a deep breath. They're acting like that was nothing. Maybe it wasn't what you thought. Calm down. "Just what was that?" he asked, sounding less composed than he would have liked.

[From here]Sho let the triple troupe of travelers go up the stairs before him, taking a few moments to prepare. First, of course, he removed his "disguise", reapplying the shirt to his head as a makeshift bandanna and revealing the jacket it had been hastily pulled over, which was in turn over naught but his bare chest. When he was sure they had reached the top of the stairs, he followed after ( ... )

"I'm a youkai," said Yukari with a smile. "A creature of forgotten folklore now lost to the mists of time." Oh, some people still remembered the youkai, but no one really believed in them anymore. The light have knowledge had driven back the shadows of the world and left the youkai, fairies, gods and oni with no place to hide anymore. "My ability stems from the very core of who and what I am, as the youkai of boundaries and gaps. You could say, I suppose, that I am my own Stand."

Not many others so far. It seemed the way was clear. Hopefully no one had set Patient Possessions on fire like that one kid had been talking about a few days ago.

"It's just down that hall," she added, pointing the way with her parasol.

Bucciarati suddenly stopped and raised his flashlight to shine on Yukari.

"You're not...human?" he said, shocked.

Powers without a Stand was one thing. Given how completely absurd the premise of Stands were themselves, it wouldn't be hard to imagine other types of powers. For instance, there had always been stories in Italy about the Zeppelis, the masters of the Ripple. Come to think of it, didn't the legends say that their power stemmed from breathing? Perhaps that was just a way to rationalize their powers...could it be true that the Zeppelis had actually been the youkai of the Ripple? What was a youkai, anyway? Some monster out of Japanese folklore?

"I'm sorry," Bucciarati said, using his free hand to massage his temples, "This is all a bit much for me. I suppose I should be a bit more...open-minded, shall we say, after discovering stands, but...this is quite a revelation. Also, I'd be rather grateful if you could tell me just what a youkai is. I come from Italy, so I'm afraid I have little to no knowledge of Japanese folklore ( ... )

"Oh, you'll have to be even more open-minded than that if you want to understand this institute," said Yukari with a smirk. "Tip of the iceberg, boy."

Chuckling and swinging her parasol cheerfully, she strode on down the hall, as if just out for a Sunday walk and enjoying the time.
