Whatever it was, she decided she'd learned her lesson about getting all dressed up for a while, especially on a trip out through the woods. She switched her slippers out for the standard-issue boots and threw the long coat back on over her uniform, wishing she had a coat or gloves to add to it. The night was sure to be even colder than the afternoon. When was the last time she'd been someplace warm?
Meche picked up the same accessories as usual, a sequence that was almost as second-nature to her by now as dropping her lipstick and keys into a handbag: maps folded in her (coat) pocket, flashlight in her left hand, spear in her right, with the extra addition of a pair of shears in her left coat pocket. Extra insurance for a bad night. On her way out, she tore out a page of her journal and dashed off another hasty note to Manny to let him know where she'd be, but she wasn't really sure she held out a lot of hope that he'd come by. The notes were gone every morning, but that didn't mean he was reading them.
