Day 47: Lunch

Feb 01, 2010 04:33

Heat was able to ignore the still faintly throbbing spot on his head as he was led back into the cafeteria for another meal he had no intention of eating. He kept himself from rubbing at what he knew would be a small bump because dammit it didn't hurt that much. It was embarrassing, was what it was ( Read more... )

Talking with Kio had been interesting, and in a way Brainiac 5 wouldn't have objected to extending the conversation into lunch as well, but he had another, more important meeting scheduled for then, so he bid the older man goodbye and quickly made his way into the cafeteria. Since he'd given Lelouch information on how to find him - something he wasn't entire pleased about, but since Grell already knew his appearance, name, and room number, there currently wasn't much point in keeping hidden - he'd logically have to be there relatively early to avoid keeping the other patient waiting ( ... )

Brainiac 5 glanced up and took a good look at the older patient as he got close enough that it became apparent his goal was this table as well, but wasn't sure if the newcomer was Lelouch or not. And the fact that the new arrival seemed intent on just staring at him rather than saying anything wasn't helping to make him any less uneasy. For a moment he even wondered if it was someone who had reason to recognise the Brainiac insignia and what it meant, which made his stomach twist nervously.

Theoretically he supposed it was entirely possible that someone would recognise him or his ancestor's mark, bringing to light far too many questions he'd rather not have to deal with here of all places. But it would be so much easier if he could just... pretend as though his past immediately before awakening in the Institute hadn't happened ( ... )

"What?" Accusations hadn't been what he was expecting by any means, and while there was a brief moment of confusion, it was quickly replaced by a burst of anger. Lelouch had been the one who wanted to talk to him, and had shown interesting in discussing theories that few others had. Brainiac 5 had thought maybe he could find another ally in this meeting, but clearly he'd been mistaken there.

"Your reaction was the least of my concerns," he said flatly, his lunch completely forgotten in favour of the human opposite. "While I can admit to some regret at having to resort to subterfuge in the first place, my reasons far outweighed whatever perceived damage may have occurred to your supposed reputation - which, need I point out, is largely just that of asking too many questions, so I don't see how my asking more could possibly alter it in any way - and are therefore of more concern to me than what you might have thought at the time ( ... )

"Embarrass myself--" As much he tried not to give anything away, Brainiac 5 felt his face heat at those words. 'Operating with an understanding of the basics of human social interaction'... Lelouch couldn't have possibly known how accurate that assessment was, though the Coluan liked to think he was much better at social situations than he had been previously. It was just that he didn't see why he should have to waste time asking for permission for something so minor when his own reasons for doing so were far more important to his own safety. If he'd known this was the reaction he'd have gotten, maybe he would have reconsidered and tried to think of an alternate method, but the fact was that avoiding detection by Grell was still the priority.

But apparently Lelouch either didn't see it that way, or hadn't really figured out Brainiac 5's motivations at all. He frowned, his jaw tightening as he waited out the lecture he was receiving, still silently seething that he was getting a lecture at all.

After all, your responses alone ( ... )

His jaw tightened automatically at Lelouch's answer, which was just barely in the realm of 'civil', but Brainiac 5 didn't react to what he thought was likely an attempt to bait him. He'd listen to Lelouch's proposal first, and then make his choice ( ... )
