Day 47: Sun Room [2nd shift]

Jan 28, 2010 16:57

Cloud knew he should be taking the opportunity to check out the rec field during the day. The fresh air would be a welcome change from the crowded stuffiness the Institute usually provided, and he would have a chance to scope out the area when it wasn't all under the cover of darkness. When offered a choice, however, he remained in the sun room ( Read more... )

Along the way, Riku picked up the same nurse that accompanied him when he first woke up. The woman's fingers latched around his bicep in a manner that frustrated him, and he wanted nothing more than to brush her off. But it seemed she wanted to drag him in an opposite direction. Outside, maybe, but he shook his head, still trying to be as placid as possible. The information from Shinji made that difficult, so he kept his mouth shut for the moment ( ... )

Finding out that Axel had returned here was both relieving and distressing. It was a relief because she knew of Axel's fate back "home", but distressed because his fate here really wasn't that much better. It bothered her, it couldn't be helped. Still, it was surprising to know so many people she knew were slowly trickling back. Or maybe they never left in the first place, and she just never noticed.

The day was not done surprising her when she stepped into the Sun Room, thinking of retiring with a slight nap to restore her strength for tonight. Any drowsiness that she might have had was dashed in an instant, though, when she saw a familiar figure standing by the bulletin board.

"Riku?" Naminé hoped that she was wrong, that she somehow mistook someone else with Riku. But she was sure of it now that she was actually closer, one hundred percent. But... How? When? First Axel had returned, and now Riku, after so long?

It wasn't a voice that he expected to hear. Naminé was supposed to be back with Kairi, but he turned toward her immediately, startled at her sudden presence. She wasn't transparent at all; she looked the same as she did when he worked alongside her, trying to bring Sora back from his sleep, and even afterward, when he protected her from Ansem the Wise's desire for execution. That wasn't right. He couldn't profess to know for certain that she couldn't be here-he knew practically nothing, of course-but it didn't make him feel at ease.

Not that he minded seeing Naminé herself. They were friends, and just as naturally as he protected Sora and Kairi in some way, he did the same for her. Her presence made her the second person he found who was mostly incapable of combat in a place that could ask for that. That could have been his paranoia speaking, but it seemed too easy so far ( ... )

It really was him! Naminé wondered what "time" he was from, though she could take a guess when he seemed just as surprised as she was, asking her how she got there and if she was fine. Naminé nodded, also keen on hiding her little "adventures" during nightshift from Riku for the time being. There were more important things for them to talk about.

"I'm fine. And... I've been here for quite some time, actually. When did you arrive here?" It was important to get that out of the way first, she supposed. Naminé surely would have noticed Riku if he came sooner, right? She probably had a lot to tell him, and she was determined to make sure he knew everything about this place. Naminé didn't want to lose any more friends.

But... First, Axel returned, and now Riku? Naminé wasn't sure what to make of this sudden appearance of many people that she knew, though this wasn't the first time this has happened. Still, it was a little unsettling.

"Just this morning," he said, trying to maintain the casual tone as much as possible ( ... )

Just this morning... Then yes, Riku was probably going to need a lot of things explained to him. Naminé didn't mind though, as she was quite used to explaining difficult things to people. Actually, this was probably much simpler then telling someone that they didn't exist or telling someone else that she had gone through their memories and made a mess of them. But, where to start?

"I'll tell you everything I know," Naminé nodded, glancing at the bulletin board. Well, that was a good of a place to start as any... "You probably already know that this placed is called Landels, and here we are told that our lives are 'fake', that they never happened. That's why the nurses call you by another name. They ... sometimes, they do manage to brainwash the people brought here into believing that."

Like the other Riku, Naminé glumly thought, but she left that out. There was also that strange case Sora mentioned, but Naminé didn't know enough to tell Riku about it ( ... )

"Yeah, I've noticed," he said, making it clear that he wasn't too happy about it. That explained why the place didn't stink, too-if there wasn't a way for him to smell things, because that power was repressed, it would make every bit of sense. Riku wondered what this place really smelled like, and he wondered if he'd be able to tell later, when those doors opened and things started changing. He'd have to see then, but for now, he decided to keep those thoughts to himself.

"How are you here away from Kairi?" The fact that these guys here had some way of separating her from her Other was a bigger concern. It was something that they would need to deal with. No, it wasn't that Riku minded Naminé being away-there was a reason why he protected her, after all-but it meant they had some power that could possibly be catastrophic in other situations. Perhaps she was expecting him to focus on the nights, the troubles there, and so forth, but he needed that answer first.

Unfortunately, Naminé didn't have an answer for Riku's question. She frowned, looking down at her feet as she wasn't sure what to say. It was odd, wasn't it? She even persisted here after Kairi had already...

"I wish I knew. It seems like this place even has the power to bring the Nobodies back, along with those who have already died. I am not the only one who has reappeared here," She explained, having to settle for that. If this place could revive the dead, then bringing her back from Kairi's heart was probably possible as well. She knew Riku didn't mean anything by that question, though. Riku was not DiZ, after all.

Now that she had explained about the night... While there was still much Naminé could tell him, she wondered what he would find relevant. Surely, there was information that could have been more important to him then others.

"Is there anything else you'd like to know? About how this place works, or the people here, or...?"

That wasn't a full answer to his question, but relatively acceptable, considering. If she didn't know, then it was another thing to figure out. They would have time, it seemed like; if Naminé knew enough to do a question and answer session with him, then she had been here long enough to gain those answers. It was still pretty strange to think of that, but if it was other Nobodies, too, then the power wasn't anything simply applied from their world. It was more than that-something very strong that could bring Nobodies back from where they faded to.

If, of course, they faded to anything. Nothing may have been eternal, but was nothing really something to pull from?

Riku realized it would be a good idea to know who was there, and he hesitated between asking that and asking more about the nagging nurses. But wouldn't it work to just ask both? "Who all is here?" he asked, realizing that was important. "And what are the nurses doing? Why are they going along with this sham, too?"

Simple questions that Naminé could answer. Thankfully, Sora had answered his first question already, so it was easy to simply relay that information back to him. Though the second question... Naminé truly did not know how to approach that one. One thing at a time, though ( ... )

"I haven't." Sora wasn't supposed to be here, that much he was sure of. Riku didn't like gaining that information, nor was he particularly comfortable with having it at his disposal. With everything laid out before him, why was he brought here? And why after Sora had been there the longest? It wasn't like he wanted to stay home. Normally, there would have been an internal panic at the idea, but Riku managed to subdue that side of him. After all, circumstances showed time and time again that Sora was capable of handling himself. Maybe his memories got messed up along the way, but he was certainly capable enough.

As for the rest of it ... Knowing that all those enemies were there made Riku uneasy. Axel didn't count, but the others definitely did. Sora had to defeat each of them for a reason, even if Riku didn't hold a particular grudge against Nobodies themselves. No, they weren't the creatures that Ansem the Wise would have spelled them out to be, but these particular ones made things difficult for a time. Putting them in a place ( ... )

"No, during the daytime they are normal," Naminé answered, and she knew what Riku was thinking, which was why she gave him a pleading look and held up a hand to stop him. Or rather, stop his train of thought because it was one leading him nowhere. "I understand what you're thinking, but please don't think of attacking them during the day. There's ( ... )

The extent of his recklessness came in wishing to work alone, but Riku was a survivor at this point. If he wasn't, the Organization would have taken him down easily while Sora was still asleep. They didn't take kindly to the idea of an impostor, after all. His very instincts were always to attack and bring down things to make things better, but he would use his head. Knowing that Sora was here meant he'd have to figure out how to handle things more carefully.

"All right, I get it," he replied. He should have realized they had some way to sedate them. The only way to attack them would probably be to get everyone unified, and even then, there was a chance the people here would be prepared for that. Riku felt frustrated at the lack of action he could actually take, but he would deal. There would be other methods.

"Do you have a way of keeping safe?" A slight shift of gears, but he wanted to check on her. Although a part of his focus would be on Sora, the boy didn't need Riku's attention like Naminé would.
