Tobias really needed to get out more.

Tonight. Tonight he would go out, go flying, monsters and people and everything ignored, just for once, unless he saw someone in need or... no. People here had survived without him, and they'd keep on surviving, even if he took one night to stretch his wings.

But that would be later. For now, he would eat, and talk, and spend another day calling himself by different names on the off chance that some Yeerk or other might, somehow, find out about it, and get word out, even though this was probably a set-up of some sort by someone way bigger than the Yeerks and... man, this Astor thing was getting ridiculous. It wasn't like he'd seen a single sign of anyone who would have any idea who he was, besides...

He stopped at the bulletin board, jotting down a quick note, and breathing a sigh of relief. It might have been the wrong choice, but he'd find that out soon enough.

Step considerably lighter-- either he could get to stop being so paranoid, or someone would attack him soon and he'd know he was in danger, and either way, the suspense was gone-- he got breakfast and juice and sat down to eat.

For some reason, he hadn't really expected so many people. The nurse had given Tylor a gentle tap to get him to move forward towards the food, although once Tylor had that direction he didn't hesitate again. Cafeteria style wasn't his favorite, and he thought breakfast should have coffee, but after a little sulking hadn't worked he picked out some juice and a breakfast sandwich, then started to look for a table.

If anybody with a patient's costume knew what was going on, it wasn't really likely, and even if they did claim to, they might have just been the sort of person who really needed a hospital like this. Asking was pointless. If he waited, things would come together somehow on their own. As long as there was food, clothing and shelter, it was at least okay to rest here a while, Tylor decided.

Finding someone who didn't seem too unhappy in expression, Tylor smiled wide and sat down nearby. Even in a place like this, it'd be nice to have friends. "Hi! Do you mind if I sit here?"

This guy looked cheerful. Not anyone Tobias knew, but Tobias didn't know a lot of people, here. "Go for it," he said, with a smile back. "I'm Tobias."

"Thanks! I'm Justy Ueki Tylor, age twenty, lieutenant commander of the United Planets Space Force! Nice to meet you." The salute he'd offered with his introduction had been a little too sloppy to fit the military declaration, but it was probably just as well, since Tylor really wasn't supposed to just salute every time he said his name. He just liked it.

It was possible Tobias would think he was crazy, but that was okay too, as long as Tobias was friendly. "Do you like your food?"

Not only did he look cheerful, but he acted it, too, and Tobias' smile widened involuntarily at the guy's happiness. "Nice to meet you, too. You're from somewhere with spaceships, then?" So was Tobias, technically, though only the aliens had interstellar ones.

"Yeah, it's pretty good," he answered, and sipped his juice. "Better than school food."

Tylor tried a bite of his own sandwich before answering. "And it's better than our commissary food too! So, does that mean you've never been in space? I hadn't either, until I signed up. You should go if you get the chance, it's great! Pretty scenery, excitement, lots of time to relax... but I'd missed being on a planet, too."

Any planets with humans had to have space ports, but that didn't mean everywhere on every planet did. Tobias must have been from a smaller city or town.

Woah, was this guy new? The multiple-universe-trans-temporal thing was pretty much the first thing anyone learned about, as far as he knew, but Justy (Commander Tylor? He wasn't sure how the ranks worked, especially since he was from someplace that has a space force. And a united planets.) "Not exactly. I've been a couple times, but mostly by accident, or only up into orbit. By the way-- are you new here?"

Orbital transport, as a fast way of getting from place to place on a planet, was pretty common everywhere so far as Tylor knew, so that wasn't surprising. Tobias's insight was harder to figure out.

"Oh, does it show? I just got here today. Do you know if they have a hot spring or bath here?" Tylor laughed a little with embarrassment, although looking really obvious about belonging here probably should have been more of a problem.

"Yeah, it kinda does." Tobias leaned forward in his seat a bit and propped an elbow on the table, examining his new acquaintance. "I guess that means no one's given you the rundown, have they?"

(XD; That's fine! I figured it was something like that.) justawaketylor January 25 2010, 03:52:59 UTC
Tylor stood still for the examination, only blinking a few times. "Well, the nurse told me I'm Mr. Nakamura now. Does that count as the rundown? The food's good and the clothing's cheerful, plus a lot of the nurses are really cute, so even if this is the wrong place, I like it so far." If someone had planned to shove him out of the way for convenience's sake after he'd done his job, a hospital beat a firing squad.

Tobias laughed, a little, though it didn't sound very happy. "I guess it does seem pretty nice at first, doesn't it? But the thing where she called you by the wrong name-- the staff does that to everyone, and tries to convince them that they're crazy, that they're not really who they think they are." He smiled an awkward little smile. "And everything goes freaky at night. Serious house-of-horrors scariness."

"They do that to everyone?" Tylor blinked some more, then leaned back from the table to look around, trying to get a better view of the room's occupants. "That's amazing. It must be so hard just to think of so many names!"

This was rapidly turning into a situation that was too big to sum up or even brush off too easily, and Tylor didn't like that. Especially the last part. "Scariness? Like what? Is this place haunted?"

It was still possible Tobias was insane or lying, but that was too much analysis for Tylor to bother with. Maybe this wasn't better than a firing squad.

Tobias... had never thought of that before. Huh, that probably was a bit of a task, with how many people there were here. Or they just opened a phonebook and picked names at random, which was a lot less effort, and all that was beside the point.

"Uh, yeah, probably," he said, after his bemused moment, "and not just names, but these whole big stories about how you're a normal person from early 21st century Earth. There's a lot of people here who weren't from Earth, or from the 21st century, or even human." He looked around, and pointed out the nearest non-human he knew. "Like that guy with the beard, he was a massive sapient robot."

Haunted? "Probably, though I haven't seen any ghosts yet. I have seen zombies and monsters and... brainwashing people to attack other people." If you could call the last "seeing" when it had been him. "All after nightfall, of course, and the nurses think we're all crazy, so they don't listen to a word we say."

The story wasn't too long, but it was full of helpful details, and Tylor started drinking his juice while Tobias talked. It was pretty good, too, even if he didn't really drink it as a habit. Maybe he should drink more of it when he got back home. Glancing over a bit when Tobias pointed, Tylor blinked at the man who seemed to be having trouble (and also was a robot) and someone else who seemed to be assisting. Well, that was why it was so helpful to have friends.

As Tobias's explanation ended, Tylor put down his juice and nodded, thinking a few moments before responding. "Monsters and zombies and brainwashed people. And weird new lives too. That sounds really unhealthy for the patients!"
