Night 46: M51-M60 Hallway

Jan 02, 2010 20:05

Heh, tonight was promising to be kind of interesting. First time in awhile, it seemed like, for which Xigbar was far too happy to give things a shot. That in mind, he stripped off that aggravating gray shirt and started grabbing his weapons, making sure that they were all okay. Three knives lashed to his ankles, three arrows tied around his waist, ( Read more... )

Honey was careful to savor the piece of cake at the end of his meal. Cake was so hard to come by lately that just gulping it down wasn't quite as satisfying. But he was long finished by the time night rolled around. He picked up his new toys that Leon had made for him, leaving half of the kunai in his drawer. The bunny handle had turned out really cute too thanks to Takashi's drawing skills. It was sure to come in handy if anything came their way too. He tucked them away and grabbed his broomstick after securing Usa-chan and his flashlight and he was ready to go. He left the door open a crack, waiting for Takashi to show up.

And as usual, Mori rounded the corner of the hall and made the short trip to pick up his cousin. His mind was still heavy with the worries he had from earlier, but he tried to push them away as he approached Mitsukuni's door. They were close enough that Mitsukuni could be affected by Mori's moods and the last thing Mori wanted to do was upset him right now.

Moving up to the door, he knocked lightly on it and then pushed it open. Mitsukuni was waiting for him as he expected and the taller boy smiled. First order of business was the cake in his hands and Mori moved forward, holding the plate out to his cousin.

Honey stepped out into the hall to greet his cousin, smiling brightly when he saw the extra piece of cake. He tried clumsily to take it, though his hands were full of other things, so it took a bit of jostling to free a hand enough to grab it. Chocolate cake was definitely among his favorites, ranking almost as high as strawberry cake ( ... )

Mitsukuni came out to greet him and Mori took a step back to better allow him space. He seemed to be carrying a lot of things and as his cousin shifted things around to get to his dessert, Mori held his hands out in case he wanted to deposit anything there.

As his cousin ate, Mori pondered what he said, giving him a thumbs up to indicate that he was back to his usual healthy self. The Cake Club again was missing members, the spices were no longer an issue, and helping people was a possibility. But helping people might mean going toward Tamaki and then Mitsukuni would realize that their friend was gone. There had to be something else they could do, somewhere else to go that wouldn't reveal Tamaki's disappearance.

They still needed to repay Leon for his services, right? The catboy alchemist with ears that were actually real had given them his own metal to make the shuriken, and Mori felt a debt of gratitude to him. Maybe if they made something for him to eat to help him regain his strength after his sessions and brought him ( ... )

Sai crept past them while he was still finishing up his cake, but it looked like he had a friend waiting. That was good, Honey decided. Not that he'd doubted Sai had friends, but he was just glad to see that his roommate didn't have to go out into the scary night all alone.

But as usual, Takashi was right. Leon had done them a huge service last night and they hadn't so much as brought him a scrap of metal. They definitely needed to repay him for being so nice. A treat was of course the first thing that came to Honey's mind and the kitchen did have metal they could collect to make up for what they'd used. Probably a lot easier to get than pulling soggy pipes out of the walls too. At least he sure hoped so ( ... )

Sai stepped past them and out into the hall to meet a friend and Mori followed him with his eyes. It was good to see Sai going off to meet people, even better to see that he did indeed have a group he kept to at night. Mori had assumed as much since Sai always seemed to be going off somewhere, but now there was a face to the shadowy image. A face and a scent that Mori would be sure to keep track of ( ... )

Sai was to meet up with Shikamaru tonight. Problem was, he didn't think they'd made plans to meet in any specific location. Should he run to the other ninja's room or wait here and expect the chuunin to meet him? As much as he preferred to be the active one, he thought the second option might be the better one this time around. The other ninja was sure to come look for him, and he could apologize if it irritated him. That would be better than possibly missing each other by trying to meet elsewhere.

There was no reason to make himself a nuisance during him roommate's meeting with his cousin, however, so after he'd changed and equipped himself he nodded a farewell to the smaller teen and walked out the door. He would wait just out in the hall where he could be seen easily but would still have the option of returning to the room should something dangerous make an appearance.

When Shikamaru spotted the slender figure at the end of the hallway (Sai's stomach was practically luminous at night...what was whoever dressed him thinking?), the force of relief was unexpectedly strong. He took a long breath, reminding himself that this was no different than normal, especially if Kakashi wasn't there. The other ninja's absence suggested a level of trust...that is, assuming Sai was waiting for him.

"Hey," he greeted with a shrug, as if the meeting had been entirely by chance. Recently, parts of Shikamaru's demeanor seemed to subtly shift, as if he was controlled by routine rather than actual nature. He was natural enough when he leaned against the wall, arms crossed, but the next statement was very mildly uncomfortable. "I slept through fourth shift," he said, knowing it wouldn't be a surprise, "so I missed the bulletin. We're supposed to do something together?"

It was also a relief for Sai to see the chuunin approach him, and he smiled Shikamaru's way. He took a step away from the wall. "Yes. It's just the two of us. Sakura is working with the ninja that goes by the name Raphael and Kakashi is working with Obito."

In all honesty, Sai wasn't completely certain on the details of their mission, but Shikamaru would surely know. "Kakashi-san said: 'we still need to thank our toymaker properly.' That is all we were given as instruction."

The pale ninja shifted his stance, one hand resting on the machete held to his waist by a knotted long-sleeved shirt, head tilted. "I assure you I am in a state of mind capable of performing the mission adequately tonight."

Obito...right. Shikamaru had definitely slept through too much. Well, Kakashi knew what was best for the Leaf-nin, so he didn't let the new name throw him, and only a slight raise of one eyebrow indicated his confusion ( ... )

Sai nodded. He'd thought it might have been something along those lines, but he didn't want to make assumptions unless there was no alternative. He was grateful that Shikamaru knew for certain. That saved a lot of trouble ( ... )

Another Uchiha...huh. As long as he was friends with Kakashi, though, he probably wasn't all bad. Then again, Kakashi thought there was something redeemable about Sasuke aside from the fact that he was a Leaf-nin and they were responsible for their kind. It was before the massacre, either way, and Kakashi must have been practically a genin. Strange to think of the previous generation as teenagers. Again, he vaguely contemplated his future (er, the other Shikamaru's future) before dismissing the thought with a glance toward the door. It was a waste of energy to dwell on things that couldn't be changed ( ... )

"The restrooms can be safer, but... not always." Sai was reminded of the 'death slugs' from one of his earliest nights there - the enormous leeches that had left him and his two pirate friends near death. They had been guarding an item of value, yes, but there was no reason something like that couldn't happen again. "There is also the garden shed. The metal will be easier to access there, if not in better condition. The chances of that area being dangerous are equal or stronger, but the courtyard or rec field are almost guaranteed to be worse."

After all, his first night there with Sasuke had involved being attacked by rodents of an unusual size. Honestly, there wasn't anywhere in the Institute that could be considered safer than anywhere else unless one counted the patient rooms. Any metal found there would be stealing from others.

"There's a small amount of metal to be found in the janitor's closet or the general storage on the second floor, but that ma become more trouble and is bound to be picked over by others before we

Shikamaru groaned and flopped onto the nearest bed, closing his eyes while he thought. Fortunately, that concentration wasn't painful.

"We're both armed," he said, thinking out loud, "so unless something goes wrong, we should be able to handle danger." They were, after all, trained ninja. "Which shed, the one in the courtyard? Yeah, if there are too many birds, we could lock ourselves in the shed once we got there." Although he was a target for the creatures, he preferred the birds to the less predictable monsters in the institute. At least he knew what to expect. "Climbing over the wall's the best way to reach it, right?" The only other route would take them through, well, pretty much everything they were better off avoiding.

Shikamaru hadn't been outside during night, and when he was permitted outside during the day, his concentration was usually directed skyward.

"Ah... not that shed, no. I meant the one in the greenhouse. The area might be more secure. I apologize if my wording was off." Of course, there was only his one trip there to go by, but he didn't recall seeing as much on the bulletin about things happening in that area as he had with the larger open areas.

He didn't take a seat, merely watched Shikamaru. "It's located on the other side of the building, but just getting down the main hallway and out the side door shouldn't be a problem." Unless, of course, there was a brainwashed patient guarding that end of the hall as there had been with Itachi that one night. "However, if you'd still prefer the courtyard, we can work our way toward that as well." It could even be reached through the path to the greenhouse.
