Breath came first. It was a sudden gasp, the air raw in his throat, though he was too numb to notice it at first. His body tried to follow the rush of thoughts that came tumbling through his mind and only managed to make a few jerky motions in response, his head falling back to the metal beneath with a dull thud.

He shivered again, still struggling just to control his basic motor functions with any sort of fine tuning. There was only a slight hesitation this time. It was possible that whatever was behind the door was something he didn't want to meet. A monster, a spirit, some kind of demon... but the desire to be near another living being was greater than the desire to be safe, and while he didn't get up, he tapped again, faster this time.

It wasn't so much the tone or the yelling as it was just how familiar the voice on the other side was. Was that really him? It took conscious thought to decide whether or not to follow the order. It was strange that the same voice could make him want to fling open the door himself, but also made him want to hide in the darkest corner of the room and hope he was never found.
He opened his mouth to call out, but couldn't seem to find his voice. After what felt like a long moment's hesitation, he balled his hand into a fist and hit the door twice before falling back, leaning on the wall, but clear of the path of the door.
