Day 46: Breakfast

Dec 12, 2009 11:15

For the second time, Rika found herself waking with a start. She blinked at the grey light streaming through the windows, and looked across the room. Anise was still asleep. So. I'm still here. Let me just check...Rika put on her slippers and walked over to the desk, checking the drawer and breathing a light sigh of relief. Good, the knife was ( Read more... )

Another show to view...

Those were among the last words Anise heard before the abrupt end of the night. She woke up once again from a restless sleep, feeling much better than she had the previous day, but still far from great. Seeing Guy alive was an enormous relief, and getting that apology out was a load off her chest, but it didn't change the fact that all of those horrible things still happened. And if the Head Doctor was saying what she thought he was, something similar had just happened to another group.

Was it really all just a game to him? Torturing and traumatizing people, one group after another?

A distinct rumbling from her stomach interrupted her thoughts to remind her that she barely ate anything yesterday. Right... Anise couldn't lie around worrying about what might have happened to a bunch of people she probably didn't know. She had to take care of herself before even thinking about anything else.

When her nurse arrived, Anise was ready to go. As they walked to the cafeteria, the woman cheerfully commented on how 'Dolores' seemed more energetic today. She did feel a bit more like herself now that the worst was over with (or so she hoped), but the presence of the nurse still irritated her a bit.

Anise filled a plate with a balanced meal, taking a bit of everything. She probably took more food than she could eat, but at the time she felt so hungry it was getting hard to imagine being full again anytime soon. For once, she was more fixated on the food than the people around her, and when she sat down at a table, she didn't even look at who else was seated there.

It wasn't until she lifted her fork to her mouth that Anise's eyes wandered to see the person across from her. She froze in place like that, staring.

Oh, no way.

Dist wasn't expecting anyone to come sit with him. They never did back at Oracle headquarters and here should have been no different.

Well, except for one person. Dist looked up when he noticed motion across from him, and for a moment he wasn't sure quite what to say. She was part of that wretched Jade gang, had fought him alongside them several times. Still, if there was one person in that group that he would not be inclined to messily murder... well, it would be Jade[on his good days; on the bad, Jade was squarely at the top of his list of vendettas], but the next person would probably be Anise. She had shown him a kindness years ago and let it not be said that Dist does not remember how people treat him. That was the whole point of his journal, after all; it was rare that a person behaved in a fashion that would warrant a positive entry.

Of course, she had some negative entries in there herself due to her thoughtlessly fighting with that beautifully constructed machine against him. That was not to be forgotten, either.

When she finally looked up she seemed startled to see him, fork half to her mouth and her jaw dropped open. Dist took the opportunity to look like he was planning this all along by smirking a bit and spearing a bite of waffle with his fork.

"This looks awfully familiar."

Normally, Dist would be easy to pick out in a crowd. In fact, normally, he could be spotted from miles away, with his gaudy outfit and his big floating chair. But at Landel's he didn't have either of those things, and so Anise had completely failed to notice the man until he was right in front of her face.

At Dist's comment, Anise let out a small groan. The familiarity of the situation wasn't lost on her. The cafeteria had always reminded her of the one back at Oracle Headquarters, and now here she was, sitting across from the very same guy she used to share her meals with back then.

It was actually kind of embarrassing to think that she'd once been friends with Dist of all people. Part of Anise regretted befriending him, but she knew that if it weren't for that, he wouldn't have modified Tokunaga, and she might not have had the power to stand up for herself and to protect Ion. She owed a lot to Dist.

Of course, that didn't mean she was going to be nice to him, or anything.

"Since when are you here?" she asked in a haughty tone, once the surprise had worn off. Since it had been weeks since Anise last saw him, she had a feeling this wasn't the same Dist she met back then.

Dist waved a hand, looking somewhat nonplussed by her tone. "Since days ago. You'll have to forgive me for not immediately seeking you out to inform you." He paused for a moment to eat another bite of food, then continued. "How many members of your foul little cadre are here? I've seen Jade already." And followed him around like a lost puppy on more than one occasion, but that was not something he planned on telling anyone.

Days ago? Wow. Anise was usually on top of knowing who was around and who wasn't, but it looked like Dist had completely slipped past her. Although, a lot had happened in the past few days, and it had left her really preoccupied. Yesterday, she barely even looked at the bulletin board. It wouldn't be that weird if she missed something like this.

It wasn't a surprise that Dist had found the Colonel already. With his weird obsession with the guy, Anise was willing to bet Dist would find him no matter where they were.

"Why should I tell you?" she muttered in response to his question, before finally starting on her food. Even if Dist wasn't much of a threat, she still wasn't about to go naming Guy to a God-General, especially while he was injured. Besides that, she didn't want to look weak in front of a kind-of-enemy by admitting that their numbers were actually pretty low at the moment.

"So there are some others here, then?" Lovely. He had no intention of running off after them; they didn't like him and he didn't like them, so there was nothing to be gained by a reunion, as it were. Well, except maybe for the replica; Dist didn't know the details, having been in prison at the time, but given what he knew of fomicry, Eldrant, and what their mission had been, he felt it was safe to say that they should not have survived the encounter even if they did meet their goal. Still, Asch was in the Institute, and if the replica was also... well. Dist had some questions for the both of them.

Anise just glowered at him as she shoved another forkful of waffle into her mouth. Well, whatever. It wasn't like it mattered if Dist knew there were others besides her and the Colonel. He wasn't what she'd consider a big threat, even if he could be pretty annoying.

She fell silent for a while, quietly working her way through her waffles while doing her best to ignore the man's presence. After few minutes though, she set her fork down, seeming to have remembered something. "Oh, right. I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but you've been here before." As far as information went, that was about the only bit that Dist had any kind of right to know about, in her opinion. "I don't know anything about what you did back then, though." Probably just harassed the Colonel, like usual.
