Nightshift 45: M11-M20 Hallway

[from here]Oh, so this was the hall he needed to be in. At least, he was pretty sure it was the right place. If he remembered right, the man on the bulletin board talking about Search and Rescue, his name was Phillip Hunt. If there were only two people in a room, though, it shouldn't be too hard finding him ( Read more... )

Another night, and another melodramatic announcement over the intercom. Yue would have preferred to be spared Landel's posturing and gloating, but it was simple enough to ignore. After all, he had something to accomplish this evening, and hopefully it would prove to be worthwhile in the end. It had better be worth it, after all the work they'd put into it and the risks they'd taken...

No. It would be. Yue was certain of that, or so he told himself.

As he started to push to his feet, though, intending to retrieve the items they'd collected from their hiding place in the closet, the guardian abruptly froze in place. Something was...different. Wrong? No. Wait, not wrong but, somehow...right.

The lock on the door clicked open but Yue didn't notice. Light flared at his back, taking shape and stretching out like wings - and then the light vanished but the wings stayed, great white-feathered wings which the guardian abruptly had to draw in lest they take up far too much space in the small room. Wings that he'd sorely missed for the last two weeks and now, suddenly, had appeared without him willing it.

It left him alternately pleased to have them back at last, having been displeased at the lack of two of his limbs for all that time, and once more irritated at the way those in charge of the Institute toyed with them so. His ability to shift forms had already been taken from him, and now he was being taunted with the presence of his wings. Although in his distraction and muted delight, he'd also managed to completely forget the presence of another in the room at the moment.

Andrew couldn't help but stare. Was he dreaming? Hallucinating? His roommate had just grown wings. Honest to God feathery, white, HUGE wings. Whatever was going on, it wasn't normal.

"...Yuki..." No. He knew that wasn't right, not right now. "...Yue?" Trite as it was, Andrew pinched himself, to make sure he wasn't just dreaming, even if he couldn't remember falling asleep. Even if he was still sitting at his desk.

What in God's name...

The wings shifted with a soft rustle of feathers, expanding to touch the walls and fold against Yue's back once more, as the guardian reassured himself of their presence. He breathed out a faint sigh, then turned slightly toward his rather shocked-looking roommate and quirked a brow in inquiry.

"Yes?" he replied calmly, as though none of this was at all out of the ordinary. It wasn't, for him. And he'd no interest in playing games; Andrew might have given in to the Institute's lies, but he saw no reason to indulge him as Yukito had. There was far too much to be done.

"...you're an angel," Andrew said, dumbfounded. And slightly embarrassed, once he realized what he just said, but really that was the only way he could think about it. Aside from a really bad hallucination, and really...well, he hadn't had one of those recently.

His roommate had just grown fucking wings. Even for a nuthouse this was insane.

"Hn. I'll admit the resemblance." It seemed entirely possible that Clow had taken inspiration for his guardians from illustrations of angels (well, for one of them, at least - Cerberus was another matter entirely). And at the moment Yue didn't care to stop and argue the points. Suffice it to say, he wasn't one, time to move on, even if he did sound somewhat smug about the idea.

He merely stepped over to the closet and pulled out the sword and shield they'd retrieved from previous expeditions to the basement, hefting one in each hand with a frown. They seemed entirely useless, to look at them. Hopefully this really would work as it was supposed to.

Before leaving, though, he paused to frown at "Andrew" once more. "I'd suggest that you stay here tonight," he observed, eyes narrowing. Not that he particularly cared, of course. Because he didn't.

Andrew continued staring as Yue pulled a sword, an actual sword from the closet, as well as a shield. What was going on here?

...was all this for real?

He jerked, surprised, as Yue addressed him. "...then where the hell are you going?" he blurted out. Stupid...

It was as though Ken had never seen a night in the Institute before - or maybe now that he'd decided he was someone else, he'd also forgotten what had happened before. Or was simply deciding to ignore it, despite the better evidence of his own senses. Either way, Yue could only feel mildly irritated about it all and simply shook his head.

"Out," was all he replied, before heading out into the hallway. His attempt at a dramatic entrance was somewhat spoiled by the fact that he had to slow down and carefully work his way through the door with his wings close-furled against his back, but soon enough he was on his way.

Hopefully Ken's room hadn't changed. Hopefully he was still there and still alive and unharmed. Hopefully he was fast asleep and then Yohji wouldn't need to punch 'Andrew' if he started being a prick again.

Hopefully he remembered that he was Ken.

He took a breath, steeling himself, before he reached out and knocked at the door lightly. "Ken? Yo, Ken. It's Yohji." He wasn't using the names from this place, he refused to.

Andrew jerked in surprise at the knock--this was all insane. Certifiably, completely, and totally insane. His roommate in the nuthouse had just sprouted wings and walked out the door, the door that should have been locked, and now Yohji was knocking on it and this was just ridiculous.

What in God's good name was going on here? Was everyone...were they right?

No, that couldn't be. It just couldn't. He was Andrew, dammit. And all this wasn't happening.

He was tempted to ignore the knock. But if the door was open, Yohji'd just come in anyway. Maybe if he got into bed quickly enough, he could pass off as asleep, and Yohji would just go away.

"...yeah," he finally responded, moving toward the door, feeling slow and heavy with reluctance and disbelief. "I'm coming."

For once, today, Andrew didn't correct the use of that name. It really wouldn't do any good at this point.

He sighed with relief when he heard a reply from Ken. A reluctant, grudging one, but still a response. Meant that he hadn't gone outside and got himself killed yet. It also meant that he probably didn't remember the truth yet, but as long as he was alive, then Yohji could work on that. Stupid fucking place.

He leaned against the door frame, arms folded across his chest as he waited for the door to open. Once it did, he peered at Ken. Yeah, this wasn't Ken. This was that other person who Yohji refused to acknowledge. "Believe me yet?"

Andrew glared back, wondering exactly why he surrounded himself with assholes at every opportunity. Yukito had been about the only exception today, and then he'd flipped personalities and that had all gone to shit. "I believe I'm going to bed, like a normal person would this time of night, unless you have any issues with that, too."

He backed up and made to close the door in Yohji's face. He'd probably feel bad about doing so later, but he just did not want to deal with this, hallucinations or not.

If anything, the glare just made Yohji smirk. At least he was still as grumpy as Ken could be. Shame he seemed so much more pissy over nothing. Ken was more fun, at least when he wasn't going off the deep end and being scary. "Wow, so 'Andrew' has no sense of curiosity either? You're just going to be a good little boy and go to bed like the nurses tell you to, despite the door being wide fucking open with not a uniform in sight?"

He moved quickly when ken tried to close the door, slipping forward just enough to keep it from closing.

"If you find any of this shit amusing, you need to recheck your sense of humor," Andrew shot back, cursing the fact that he hadn't closed the damn door fast enough. "And no, I intend to go to bed because I'm tired and I have a headache. The door being open is either nothing but my overactive mind or a fluke."

It had to be. None of this was actually happening.

"And since you obviously don't fucking like me when I'm something approaching sane, why are you still around?"

[ooc: At least Ken won't have to be tagging around slowing you down when Yohji goes to whap Cliff upside the head!]

Whatever Yohji's response would have been, Andrew would have to wait to hear it. He suddenly felt strange--dizzy almost, and blacked out. But he didn't collapse at Yohji's feet, didn't suddenly wake up in bed with the lights on and a nurse calling him.

No, he vanished. Completely and utterly, like he was never even there.

[getting dragged here. Have fun with that, Yotan. :D]
