The intercom speakers came on with a familiar hiss and crackling static, which continued on for what seemed to be a full minute. Finally, the Head Doctor spoke, his voice somber again:
"I'm not feeling too well either," he said, strangely quiet. The sound of someone scratching through their hair could be heard. "Kind of awful, actually."
He took a deep breath.
"I am truly sorry for the last two nights. I had no part in any of them, and what I said was true. We need better security, and better protection for all of you."
The crackling increased in volume, but just under it, barely audible, the Head Doctor added:
"Which is why we need to take your training to the next level..."
Slowly, all the sound faded out. Then, the doors unlocked.
