Nightshift 43: Chapel

Sep 05, 2009 13:49

[ from here ]If it wasn't for the fact that this night was growing gradually more absurd by the minute, Rolo would have been mildly surprised to find that the room he just entered looked like a chapel or church of some sort. He also should have been surprised to find what sounded like a fountain all the way in the front of the room, situated where ( Read more... )

The tall warrior came to a halt inside the room as her eyes fell upon the fountain. It certainly made the room more interesting than it had been during the day, but that did not mean the change was for the better.

"That was not in here this morning," she stated. Tilting her head back, she drew in a deep breath. "The air holds the scent of blood."

Rolo had already started to walk forward, looking around the room and trying to see if there was anything hiding in the shadows, but Teresa's attention was focused on the most obvious object in the room ( ... )

"My handler brought me here this morning, for whatever need humans have to worship beings that care nothing for them anymore," Teresa replied, moving toward the fountain. "There were several others here, many engaged in praying or something to that effect. I was curious as to what was behind the alter or if the god that this chamber was dedicated to had a name." Though it seems the alter was no longer in existence, so she might not ever find out.

Stopping next to the fountain, Teresa looked down into the red waters after reading the plaque, before she dipped two fingertips into the blood and held them up to look at. She rubbed the liquid between her fingers a moment before briefly tasting it.

"Human blood."

Teresa's opinion on religion seemed to hit the mark with Rolo, who nodded as she went on to describe what the room was like in the morning. It seemed like the fountain was the only new addition to the room since then, and it was a bit of a mystery how it was installed and already pumping ... blood so quickly.

Of course, none of those questions were worth answering and Rolo no longer paid any mind to it. Teresa, on the other hand, still seemed interested in it and Rolo quirked an eyebrow when she dipped her hand in the thick redness and tasted to verify.

"Really?" What other kind could it be? was what Rolo wanted to ask, but he reminded himself that he was traveling with a self-professed demon killer.

"If that's all, we should ..." Move on, but Rolo cast a wary glance at the door, not sure if the coast was clear or not.

She looked over her shoulder "Why, are you seeing something else?" she asked before turning forward to get an overview of what the room looked like. Everything seemed the same as it was during the day, save for one obvious addition - a very strange statue of a monster sitting just behind the altar. She couldn't quite see all of it quite yet in the dark, but she could hear some kind of flowing liquid coming from the statue's direction as well.

"My wife," he answered dryly as he stepped through the doorway. "I often see her when I close my eyes. This place is making her appear before me when they're open." I know she's not real, but it's hard not to trust what I see before me. It's hard to know the truth. At least her death is something I know. Something burned into my mind.

He moved his flashlight across the pews, feeling out the room. "Seems like a strange place for a church," he remarked. And what is that noise? "Is there a fountain in here?"

"Really? You're seeing people now?" That worried Utena even more than the moaning and the intercom problems. This was dipping back into the thing that had made her so angry earlier - playing on the emotions of patients by throwing twisted versions of their loved ones in front of them.

She made a frustrated sound as they moved forward, thinking of Landel (or whoever) all snug and secure up on the third floor, laughing at them. "It's just a trick. He just wants to get to you," Utena told Leonard very firmly as they moved forward. She swept her flashlight beam across the pews, looking for anything that might be in hiding.

As they got closer to the statue, the subtance pouring out of the fountain became easy to identify. "Blood . . ." Utena bristled visibly as her light crept over the liquid spewing from the statue's mouth, turning it from shadow dark to crimson. "I wasn't here this morning, but I'm willing to bet this thing wasn't here before."

Leonard's light hit the statue and the blood pouring from its mouth. "Shit, is that blood?" he asked, taking a closer look. He felt a chill run down his spine. This is fucked up. What the fuck kind of-

His thoughts were interrupted as an immense sound rang through the building, accompanied by the whole room shaking. "What the fuck is that?" Leonard asked loudly, knowing what it sounded like. "An explosion? What the fuck is going on here?"

As soon as Chihaya was in the chapel, he pushed himself against the back wall and sank to the ground, hugging his knees. He tried to mutter his prayers out loud, but still couldn't breathe. In his head, words went over and over again, too quick to catch, all pleading for forgiveness.

Wally crouched down by Chihaya as she sank down onto the floor and curled in on herself. She didn't look that much better in here than she had outside, and he was starting to get more than a little worried. The hallway had been really weird and disturbing, and the intercom didn't help much there, but this seemed a little much to be just from that.

"Ch-Chihaya?" Wally asked, managing the name with only a little difficulty. He hoped that was right anyway. "Are you okay?"

Chihaya looked up with a pained smile and patted the floor.

He understood now. He was paying paying for all of his sins. He was being separated from Kagetsuya and trapped in this place, forbidden to discuss the reality with his adoptive father... and now he was dying the way Janice had, because he hadn't saved her.

"It's okay," he gasped. "Everything's... okay." He winced as he failed to breathe in more air. It hurt like hell. How had they just stood by and watched Janice.... Was it so bad to get involved, really?

"Thank you - for being my...friend." He could only wheeze now, pulling Wally closer to comfort him. He shouldn't have to worry.

This was frightening, but he was with a nice person at least.

It was okay to die now. It'd be a relief if anything. He'd wanted to see his friends but... well, it was okay. And there was no telling if he'd have seen Kagetsuya again. Maybe in death.

[:| Emo!Angel was depressed before he got here so... Yeah. Jeez. XD He'll be perkier tomorrow? XD]

And that sent Wally from being vaguely worried to hitting all of his panic buttons at once. People didn't talk like that unless there was something really, badly wrong with them. Like, 'help I'm dying' wrong. And with how Chihaya was gasping for breath...

"Hey! Don't talk like that!" he insisted, scooting closer and rapidly checking that she wasn't hurt or anything as best he could. "You're fine, it was probably just something in the hallway back there. It smelt pretty nasty, but it's not toxic or anything." Otherwise he'd have been showing signs way before she had. Hypermetabolisms were killers like that.

"Just relax. Panicking is just going to make things worse."
