Dayshift 43: Library, third shift

Kibitoshin left the cafeteria in what could only have been described as a state of sheer, unleaded anxiety. Why did he have to be the one Dory had spoken to first? With everything he’d said and failed to say she’d probably ended up with a reverse education. He wouldn’t have been surprised if she came out of it knowing even less than she had when ( Read more... )

This was interesting. Apparently he was free to go where he wanted today. He considered his options, before he decided to check out the library. He hadn't been in there yet, and perhaps it would contain some useful datapads.

As soon as he was left on his own and went over to the shelves, Lockdown got something of a surprise. There were no datapads. The shelves were lined with cardboard rectangles with words (which he guessed were the titles) on them. Just what kind of library was this?

Lockdown slid one of the things, labeled "Watchers", out and examined it curiously. He could now see that the thin cardboard wasn't the whole thing, but just the binding for hundreds of paper pages stacked together. It was like his notebook, only thicker. The bounty hunter opened the thing to a random page and skimmed through it. What he read was interesting, to say the least. It detailed a human male and female interacting with some sort of canine, talking about some sort of monster that was after them. The bounty hunter read a few more pages before putting the thing back. He picked up another one, a thinner one, which turned out to be some sort of romantic tale that made Lockdown want to empty his stomach. The bounty hunter did this a few more times, before gathering a few into his arms and finding a place to sit down and begin reading.

Writing fiction wasn't unheard of on Cybertron, but it was rare. Most reading material consisted of essays, policitical reports, and history. Fiction was usually accounts of myths or other such things. Lockdown wasn't sure if what he was reading about was true or not. Sure, almost none of it sounded true, but after everything he'd seen at this institute, he wasn't sure anything in these works could be false or not. The monster in that "Watchers" book certianly sounded like something the Institute would cook up.

Beelzemon argued with the human about getting pulled away from Renamon. He didn't want to leave his friend! But the lady wasn't giving up, and he didn't want to get 'sedated' again. He was only just getting over the first one!

...But seriously, why'd she have to drag him here? What exactly was he going to do with books?! He glowered at the human as she left, then looked around to see if Loz was there. He wasn't, but... There was a guy with weird marks on his face. He'd never seen a human that looked like that before. And Renamon had marks on her face too! Maybe this guy was one of them!

"Hey!" He said, totally shattering the general rule of 'when in a library, stay quiet' "Are you a Digimon?"

Lockdown looked up from the book he was skimming through (some story or account called 'Christine' about a car that killed people, which he actually kind of enjoyed) at the young man who had just approached him, his face blank, but still a little grim.

This was one of the stranger looking humans. Like himself, the man was tattooed, although his was a single human-optic on his forehead. Lockdown also noticed the pointed teeth.

"No," The bounty hunter stated. "What the frag is a Digimon?"

"Aww nuts." Just another human that looked weird. And didn't know what a Digimon was. "Sheesh, what's wrong with this place... Digimon's short for Digital Monster. We get made outta data in the Digital World an' 'f yer lucky, can get ta the Real World too. An' it's a helluva lot nicer bein' a Digimon than a human, I can tell ya that," he grumbled, feeling like his tail should be twitching right now, but it wasn't there. Aaaaugh he hated not having his tail. Or the third eye. Or, y'know, his guns.

Lockdown raised an optic-brow at the man, "And, I suppose that you're one of these 'Digimon'?" Monsters made out of data? That sounded more like some weird Decepticon digital-programming experiment than anything else.

Looking back down at his reading material, the bounty hunter snorted and murmered, "You think it sucks for you? Try going from being a powerful transforming robot to a human."

"'Course I am! ...Well, I guess 's hard to tell now. Ain't got my tail 'r my claws or th' wings and 'm missing an eye." He brought a hand to the place where his third eye should be, feeling again, just to make sure. Nope. Still not there.

"...Sounds just like a Digimon ta me. 'least the metal ones, anyway." Complete with Digivolving or something! "Used ta be able ta take on other Megas, no problem. Even without guns. Now I can' even punch down a damn door." His knuckles were actually bruised from that now.

Ah, another non-human, of the organic variety. Not that he'd met that many, just Bob, the 'Shinigami' and the Scarecrow, whatever a scarecrow was.

When the man, or 'Digimon', compared Lockdown to a 'metal Digimon', Lockdown looked up from his book to glare at him, "You sayin' that I'm some technorganic? Because let me tell you, I'm not." Who did this guy think the bounty hunter was, Blackarachnia? Also, 'Megas'? What the slag did he mean by that?

"...Whuh? Hey! I don' mean anythin' bad by that!" Beelzemon really had no idea what'd just happened, but it was worth responding to with an unconscious baring of teeth.

"I don' even know what yer talkin' about!" Sheesh. Some people were touchy. "Org--Like a human? Nah, Digimon 're made of data, like I said!" And whatever they were in the real world, but that was too confusing for him.

Lockdown just growled at the Digimon, "Yeah, well, I'm all robot." He put down his book and opened his notebook, flipping through it before finding what he was looking for. "And my transformation is this," He displayed Blitzwing's crude sketch of his car form. He was gonna have to ask HK to draw up a real picture of both his real forms.

"As you can see, I'm not some spider or anything weird or gross like that."

"Okay, sheesh!" Beelzemon leaned in to look at the kind of wobbly drawing. "...'m guessing 's not like Digivolving, then." That'd be like him turning into Behemoth or something weird like that. "Okay. I sorta got th' idea now." Sorta. The idea of that happening without Digivolution was just weird. But then again, switching over to Blast Mode wasn't Digivolution really...

"...Never said you was a Dokugumon." That would be weird.

Lockdown put the drawing away the drawing and put his notebook down. "I'm guessing that you don't have Transformers in your world," The bounty hunter murmered, picking another book up. "Digivolve, huh? Like 'evolve'? To change?" Was this guy some kind of weird organic Transformer or something?

"No giant robot's that ain't Digimon." He'd never seen any himself, not counting Guardromon, who Beelzemon had punted out of the way before. "Yeah! Y' start off weak an' then Digivolve inta somethin' better. Mega's th' highest level, an' that's what I was. Had a Mode Change, too. 's like Digivolving, only ya don't totally change whatcha look like." It was weird having to explain this to someone who he seriously still wasn't sure was anything other than a new type of Digimon. Or an old type. Whatever.

"Well, I can assure you, I'm not a Digimon," Lockdown repeated.

After listening to the explaination on Digivolving, the bounty hunter said, "Sounds more like reformatting than transforming." Although, the 'Mode Change' part sounded closer to transforming. Lockdown knew what he was talking about, since he'd been created rather small and thin, before the heavy modding had started. Anyone who saw what his original body looked like would probably never guess that it had become the large, fearsome mech of today.

"I got it, I got it." SHEESH.

"If ya say so. 's what every Digimon does. 'cept for Mode Change, not everyone c'n do that. But 's damn awesome when it happens!" Beelzemon replied, all boundless enthusiasm. And volume.

Now this guy was making it sound like he was a triple-changer or something. His optics widened when the Digimon got louder and more enthusiastic. He was like a triple-changer alright. Complete with random mood swings. Then again... "You know, you're starting to remind me of this annoying little 'bot in this group of Autobots I keep running into," Lockdown murmered, narrowing his optics. He really didn't like that annoying little scrapheap.

Thinking about said scrapheap made Lockdown think of the others in that group. The medibot with the EMP generator, Optimus Prime, the big bot with the wrecking ball, and... Prowl. The bounty hunter couldn't hold back a sigh as he thought about Prowl.

"HEY. I don' care what you think 'bout me, but I get things done." Beelzemon poked the guy in the chest, suddenly pissed off again. Could we just settle on a mood and stick with it?

"You wanna think otherwise then go right ahead an' I'll prove ya wrong."
