The light wasn't much better outside of the trees due to the fog, but it was enough to give looking through his notes a shot. Anise sat down next to him, pulling her legs up close and resting her chin on her knees. She closed her eyes, and already she could feel her head clearing up a bit. This might have been what it was like to be in Ion's shoes, she realized. He probably felt that kind of dizziness and weakness after every arte he used ( ... )

Anise seemed cheerful, despite the circumstances. He decided against asking her about all the bizarre happenings for now: the answers were probably in his journal. She was probably as tired of answering his questions as he was of not knowing anything. That feeling of helplessness made him extremely uncomfortable.
I'm not helpless. I just don't have all the answers. I don't think I ever will. Deal with it.
He looked down the street, still able to hear the moans and growls from all around. No time to for rest. Got to keep moving, wherever it is we're going. With a sigh, Leonard got to his feet, offering Anise a hand to help her up. "We should find somewhere safe, safer than the street."

"I don't think there is anyplace safe," she said, looking around at the staggering silhouettes. "I mean, those things even crawled up through the floor indoors..." So no matter where they went in town, those creepy things would find them ( ... )
