Nightshift 42: Dorst Street

[From here.]

The light wasn't much better outside of the trees due to the fog, but it was enough to give looking through his notes a shot. The small writing in his journal was still nearly unreadable, but his photos were a little easier to decipher. Field trip, he read off of Anise's picture. No reason as to why she's following me or where we' ( Read more... )

Despite feeling like she could topple over and faint any minute, Anise kept up with Leonard, even as her vision started to dim. It was a relief when they were out of the park, and even more so when she saw the man sit down on the ground. It looked like she wasn't going to have to bother him to let her take a break. He was probably feeling worn out, too.

Anise sat down next to him, pulling her legs up close and resting her chin on her knees. She closed her eyes, and already she could feel her head clearing up a bit. This might have been what it was like to be in Ion's shoes, she realized. He probably felt that kind of dizziness and weakness after every arte he used ( ... )

Leonard turned his arm over, rolling up the sleeve of his shirt and checking the marks. "Didn't realize they'd have sharp fingernails," he noted, feeling tired. He checked his other arm and legs for any visible signs of damage.

Anise seemed cheerful, despite the circumstances. He decided against asking her about all the bizarre happenings for now: the answers were probably in his journal. She was probably as tired of answering his questions as he was of not knowing anything. That feeling of helplessness made him extremely uncomfortable.

I'm not helpless. I just don't have all the answers. I don't think I ever will. Deal with it.

He looked down the street, still able to hear the moans and growls from all around. No time to for rest. Got to keep moving, wherever it is we're going. With a sigh, Leonard got to his feet, offering Anise a hand to help her up. "We should find somewhere safe, safer than the street."

Well, so long as the damage wasn't too serious. It wasn't like there was a clinic they could go running to tonight. Anise took the offered hand - not that she needed it, but if he was going to be a gentleman, how could she object? - and pulled herself back up to her feet. She'd only gotten a couple minutes of rest, but that was enough to rid herself of the dizzy feeling. She didn't feel 100% better, but she wasn't going to faint, at least.

"I don't think there is anyplace safe," she said, looking around at the staggering silhouettes. "I mean, those things even crawled up through the floor indoors..." So no matter where they went in town, those creepy things would find them ( ... )

So we're running, escaping from something that isn't the zombies. Not sure what could be worse at this point, but I'll trust her. Leonard took his own look around the foggy street, pulling his sleeve over his wound. She's right that no place is probably safe. Best to keep moving.

"You're right," he said with a nod. "So, left or right? Either way, we need to move."
