The girl caught a sudden movement out of the corner of her eye, and jumped back, narrowly avoiding a zombie that had just thrown itself in her direction. Missing its mark, the creature lost its balance and stumbled forward. It was a good opportunity, so Anise used that moment to bring the meat tenderizer down on its head. There was the sound of a crack from its skull, a thud as it hit the ground, and it was done for.
...Or so she thought, but as soon as she started to relax, Anise felt a bony grip on her ankle. With a terrified yelp, she swung the mallet a second time. This time, the skull was smashed inward, and the creature stopped moving.
Ugh. Close combat really wasn't her thing. Stupid zombies! If her artes were still up to par, and she had time to cast them, Anise swore she'd rip them all to pieces ( ... )
