Nightshift 42: Bohr Street

Windows were dark on Bohr street, but doors worryingly open, and Phoenix's eyes kept darting to each new entrance they passed, dark rectangles like open graves. He tried to think of what was this way, but his mind was a spinning blank, bolting like a rabbit every time a new face turned to stare at them with those hollow, filmy eyes. " ( Read more... )

Thankful that Juri wasn't going to be difficult about helping others, Utena made a charge for the horde surrounding the two. As they got close, however, it became clear that the horde was getting too thick to fight through easily. More zombies kept coming, and no matter how much Utena bashed and stabbed at them, it didn't seem to help.

Before they could break through, another man arrived and shouted something. There were sudden flashes of light everywhere, and Utena could feel the air around them heating up. She backed up as shining crosses crashed down, somehow managing to target the zombies and not other patients. As the light dissipated, Utena shook her head, not sure if she believed what she had just seen. Only her own experience with bizarre power in the dueling arena and strange happenings in the institute kept her from being completely thrown off. "Looks like they've got themselves covered now," she said with a shaky sigh of relief, turning to Juri. "Where should we go from here?" she asked now that they had a brief zombie-free moment.

Juri drew herself upright, her eyes first drawn to the dazzling crosses, then to Utena. Utena looked weary, but probably no more frightened than Juri felt herself. She hoped her own worry didn't show. "Somewhere high would work, but I don't know this place. Have you been in any shop with access to the roof?"

They couldn't linger long. Their sweet, hot flesh and blood would bring more undead to find them soon. No direction seemed better than any other. "I think there's more noise that way," she mused, pointing toward Main Street. "We should go away from that."

Utena looked back over her shoulder toward North Street. "I don't know about roof access, but I think there's a car dealership around the corner and next-door to where we just were. I don't hear as much noise over that way," she suggested, her legs already turning and moving in that direction. "Even if there's no way to get on the roof, a car might be a good thing to be inside if we can get one started."

Truth be told, Utena wasn't sure whether or not that was true, but the idea sounded good in her head for the moment at least. A car seemed the sort of thing that could serve as moving armour for them. It didn't hurt that she had been seeing a lot of a certain red sports car around campus before ending up in the institute, either, though.

"Come on, let's go," she said, again not really thinking about who it was she was giving orders to.
