Night 42: Twin Pines

Being inside a building, the setting of the sun was not as prevalent as it would have been outdoors. Beatrix had enjoyed a pleasant meal alone after she had left the elf and her companion outside. She'd just been getting up, folding her napkin to set on her plate at the behest of her nurse, then the change came. Being right next to her nurse, it ( Read more... )

Chise couldn't believe what was happening before her very eyes. Just a few seconds ago she and Luffy were having a nice little conversation about nakama(while he gobbled up his steak) in a nice little restaurant. Then, the entire place started to decay. Huge cracks appeared on the black stained walls, window frames twisted into distorted shapes, and the nurses mutated into monsters with unnatural figures. But to Chise, the worst of all were the townspeople; people that worked in the restaurant. Their skins turned into a grimy shade of gray that sagged, revealing the rotten flesh and bones underneath as they walked ( ... )

Luffy blinked as his chair suddenly sagged and everything changed. He looked around, seeing the same crazy things Chise saw, and was glad he at least got a chance to finish off his food.

"Kind of!" he answered as he threw his own empty plate at another monster. With how composed he was, though, Luffy acted like this sort of thing was normal conversation. "The Cat Ladies changed while we were on the buses a couple weeks ago, but this sure didn't happen!"

As for what they should do, well...obviously sitting in the booth wasn't such a great idea. But then someone shouted that the kitchen was clear, and Luffy tilted the brim of his hat back with a grin. "Let's go back there!" he said, pointing. "Get some stuff, and then go!"

The day's frustration had been slowly seeping out of Kurogane as the evening had neared, but Kurogane was quick to remember it once the zombies decided to make their presence known. Something to fight was just what he had needed, so he didn't care that this was not the building. So long as he would be able to vent some excess anger, Kurogane would fight wherever and with whatever ( ... )

Cat Ladies? Oh, he must meant the nurses. Luffy had a strange way of naming things, but now wasn't the time to find that out.

With the way Luffy was grinning, it gave Chise an impression that he was ready to blast through anything that got in his way. She couldn't understand how he managed to remain calm and energetic in this dangerous situation. She could hear a voice(of human intuition) in the back of her head telling her that if she stayed close to him, everything would turn out okay. "Okay!" she agreed with Luffy after throwing her cup at another zombie.

Just then, Chise heard a familiar voice calling out to them. Turning around, it was none other than Kurogane the grumpy bear! "M-Mr. Kuro, what are you doing here?!" she yelled back.

Luffy was in the middle of getting up from the table when he caught wind of a stranger telling them not to head back into the kitchen. Not that he'd gotten a good look at his face -- his voice wasn't familiar, though, and did anyone Luffy know really bother telling him not to go into a kitchen?

"'Course there's an exit!" he said, laughing. "It's either a backdoor or the way we came in, right?" Pretty simple! Unless the way they went in locked itself. But if that was the case, who was to say the backdoor "exit" wouldn't just lock itself too? Either way, the pirate wasn't too worried. They'd just find out the old-fashioned way.

Once Chise spoke up, it wasn't hard to figure out that this was the Kuro she'd been telling him about earlier. But now wasn't the time for introductions! Luffy grabbed for Chise's hand before glancing back at the man, who seemed to be having a lot of fun with those zombies over there. "C'mon, hurry up!"

"It means don't get yourself cornered!" Kurogane barked, hoping that this guy was not some kind of idiot. The laughing told him differently though, and he could only groan as he struck some more zombies out of the way. "I'm here because there aren't many options. There'd better be a way out back there, or else something I can use," he grunted, "And don't tell me to hurry! Just get out of here and find somewhere safe." If nothing else, Kurogane could at least cover the two while they hopefully found a back door.

Chise firmly decided that Luffy was one of the strangest boy she's ever met in her entire life. He was laughing as if Kurogane was asking the most silliest question ever. But his answer did make logical sense.

She was jerked out of her thoughts when Luffy suddenly grabbed her hand and led them towards the kitchen. Inside the entire place was littered with (truly dead)dead zombies. She tried not to look at them as they searched the area. Several knives were missing, but there were a couple left. Since Kurogane was a ninja, some of them might be useful to him.

"There's a few sharp knives in here if you want them!" she called back, holding up a bloody one.

As they ran for the kitchen, Luffy heard someone announce that the area was clear for the moment. Perfect timing! Mr. Kuro sure sounded grumpy, though, but maybe he'd be in a better mood once they used that exit he was so excited about.

"Knives are good!" he said with approval once Chise found some. Sharp things were always useful in a fight, although Luffy wasn't afraid to admit he wasn't that great with them. That had always been Zoro's specialty.

Grinning, he picked up a frying pan that had fallen out of one of the sagging cabinets. "I'll take this!" he said brightly. With his rubber powers the way they were, he knew he'd need a little something to make up for his lack of strength. Not that he couldn't punch a zombie in the face if he had, too, of course. But having something hard and flat like this couldn't be bad!

No matter what Kurogane did, the zombies were not staying down. It was like trying to face those damn Oni again; he would need a weapon before he could manage any real damage or even thin the ranks.

Hearing the calls from the back, Kurogane grunted and worked his way towards the room. A weapon was a weapon, even if it was just a knife, and Kurogane would take what he could get. "Toss it!" he called in return, not intending to lead the zombies back where most of the patients had fled. He could sense there were more than just the boy and Chise there, but there was only so much he could do, so he stayed at the kitchen's entrance, waiting for a weapon and knowing that the zombies he had taken down were soon to be back on their feet.

"I'll grab a couple just in case!" she replied, taking what remained of an apron and wrapped a few knives in it. Chise never fought with kitchen knives before and was liable to stab herself with them, so she followed Luffy's choice of weapon and picked up another frying pan. This will do for now.

Obeying Kurogane's request, she tossed the knife towards him, hoping that he'll be able to catch it without slicing his hand off. "There's a few smaller knives left if you need them!"

Luffy watched with wide-eyed curiosity as Chise threw the knife at Kuro. That was pretty cool, and it'd be even cooler if he managed to catch it. Unfortunately, he didn't get the chance to find out just yet, as he heard a sudden moan from right behind him. At the same time, a cold, dead hand gripped onto his arm.

"Woah!" he shouted, more from surprise than anything else. The pirate whirled around, promptly bringing the frying pan across the thing's ugly face. Giving a load moan, the creature's grip slackened as it fell to the ground, but it didn't look dead. Well...deader than it already looked just while walking around, anyway.

Kurogane caught the "hilt" of the knife with relative ease and would have been insulted if he had heard the thoughts of the other two. A small knife like this was nothing compared to a real sword, and if Kurogane couldn't catch one of those, he wouldn't have been able to live down the shame of it. He was a ninja, dammit!

He caught sight of the two using kitchen stuff as weapons over the knifes and could only shake his head before taking the knife to another zombie. It was better than nothing, he guessed, and if neither of them knew how to use a sword it was better they use something that didn't require much skill. "Is there an exit back there or not?!" he barked, ignoring Chise's mention of more weapons. There were more important things to think of, such as getting out of the place before they were overrun.

Chise was amazed when Kurogane caught the knife with ease(never minding the fact that it actually flew in the right direction). He truly was a real ninja!

"I...I don't know!" she shouted back after watching Luffy beat up a zombie that snuck up on him. Suddenly, she shrieked when she felt a strong grip on her leg. Some of them were still alive! She panicked and repeatedly slammed her frying pan against the creature's head and arm. It was okay to kill them, right? They were dead before, so they should stay dead.

I need to protect everyone. This is war.

Luffy glanced around. It was hard to see, but he was pretty sure there was a door on the far end of the kitchen. "Yeah, over there!" he called, pointing to it with his frying pan. Now that they knew there was an exit (or a second entrance, depending on which end a guy was coming from), maybe that'd make Kuro happy.

Of course, he didn't get to think about that for long. As soon as he saw a monster grab Chise, he slammed his own pan against the back of its skull, hitting it at the same time as she did. Their tactic looked like it worked, because the thing fell over once they were finished with it. That didn't stop the first one Luffy had hit earlier from grabbing at his leg, though, moaning as it tried to haul itself up.

"Wow, these things don't give up!" he said with a laugh, and he brought the pan down onto the top of its head again.

Kurogane was relieved for there being an actual back way out since even he wasn't sure that he could clear a path to the front with the numbers they were facing. The knife only helped so much, and it was no where near good enough for Kurogane to try a sword attack with, either on the zombies, or on the idiot behind him that kept laughing like this was some kind of game ( ... )

With Luffy's aid, Chise was able to free herself from the creature's grip. Why couldn't these things stay down! She quickly spotted the remaining zombies on the ground crawling towards them as the moaning increased. They needed to get out of here asap!

Without thinking, she gave Kurogane a "Y-Yes sir!" when he ordered them to leave and gave the nearest zombie a pan to the face. She grabbed her make-shift-apron-bag and pulled Luffy towards the exit.

[The idiot trio away~!]
