Day 42: Intercom, Dawn
After the disquieting way that night had ended, the switch over to a sunny morning would have been even more startling than usual. It helped somewhat that the patients didn't have to deal with Landel's cheery voice, however.
"Good morning," came Lydia's unwavering tone. "I'm sure all of you patients are aware that today will be the trip to Doyleton. For those of you who haven't been here long enough to know the process, you'll be taking a bus down into the nearby town to get some fresh air and a chance to stretch your legs. The nurses will provide you with appropriate clothing and a sack lunch including a lemon poppyseed muffin, apple juice, yogurt, and orange slices."
She let out a sigh, not at all fond of making these announcements, and yet this time she didn't even seem to have an excuse for the Head Doctor's absence.
"Please keep in mind that you must be on your best behavior while in the town. Anyone who acts out will be severely punished. That being said, I hope you all make the best of this chance and enjoy yourselves." Even though she spoke the words, it was a toss-up as to whether or not she meant them.
The intercom shut off and the nurses went about rousing the patients for their busy day.
