The radios hadn't been getting much use lately, and whether or not patients still carried them around was by their own choice, but the devices found a strange time in the night to come on -- right at the end.
There was no voice, but only a heavy static and a barely audible sound that could have been a human moaning in pain.
Maybe it was a distress call. Maybe it was a warning. But it didn't stop.
