Miku had found herself dreaming about the past lately. She supposed it was a kind of mental reflex, as Yuu's death had been only a handful of weeks earlier. She had opened the door of her room to let Ruri in (the cat insisted on being under the covers, but Miku was sure it was her fault for spoiling the black and white ball of fluff) turned off her reading lamp, covered her mirror with a cloth and gone to bed.
After all, she had lots of work to do for Rei in the morning and the information about the woman in Rei's picture had been long forthcoming. Not only that, but she'd had several more pictures to investigate and a few books of Yuu's to check into. A busy day awaited the young woman.
Miku had known she was having a bit of a nightmare; one didn't dream of their dead elder brother every night, and Miku certainly hadn't had any in at least a year. In her dream, Mafuyu had been walking away from her, and she could hear little girls singing, though it was indistinct and garbled. Miku had almost caught up with him, almost enough to reach his shoulder and turn him around.
"Mafuyu! Wait!" Miku called and woke with a start when she felt a gentle hand shaking her shoulder.
"Miss Rhodes, you must have been having one whopper of a dream, why, it took me twenty minutes to rouse you!" There was a strange, smiling white woman over her. A nurse, Miku corrected herself, noticing the scrubs she wore.
Ruri was gone, her room had changed over, there was no mirror, no collection of traditional Japanese paraphenalia on the bare and spartan dressers. It hadn't occured to her that the woman had called her Miss Rhodes for a moment.
"Pardon me," Miku began, sitting up and feeling around the pillow for her grandmother's hairclip. It wasn't there. "Where am I?" she asked, worried. Her necklace was gone, her hairclip, she was in a strange place with a strange woman calling her a name, and she couldn't... feel anyone. Not a single ghost. Just like she used to.
"Landel's, don't worry, you'll get lots of help here," the nurse said brightly, with a hint of pity. "Now, you've slept so long you missed the Head Doctor's speech and breakfast." She shuffled Miku out of bed, and propelled her along, watching as she brushed her teeth, and gave Miku a rubber band to pull back her long brown hair. "If you behave, I'll see about giving you your hairpin, Alice!"
This is not right, I'm supposed to be at home. Did Rei think I wasn't... wasn't okay? And who on earth is Alice Rhodes? Miku's head was beginning to ache as she was taken to a room with a buffet. She kept her hands folded, arms tucked in, looking tiny and lost.
