Dayshift 22: Chapel

Feb 18, 2007 01:58

Claire woke up in her room just like before, with little idea of how she actually got there. This time, though, she noticed something different about the room. There was another young woman, a blond, sleeping in a bed across from her. Before questioning that, though, she made sure to hide the items she'd gotten that night in her closet, shutting ( Read more... )

Aya gave up and leaned forward, curling slightly around himself, not from the pain but the rising nausea of nervousness within. He was close enough to feel Yohji's warmth through the layers of thin cotton. Yohji was real, this was not a dream and yet it seemed so very unreal.

"Hn... Do you think it could be Kritiker's facility?" he asked with low voice. Yohji was right, Aya was safe as long as it came to productivity. But what he did not know was that Mamoru was quite not the kid they worked with back when Weiss was still just the four of them. Mamoru would sell all of them and probably several times for his new 'family' if the need be. "If so, I deserve to be here just as much as you."

He frowned, glancing Yohji from the corner of his eye, dark red bangs veiling his vision slightly. "...Yohji. Are you..." Okay? How could he ask that from a person who had been willing to throw all his memories away gladly? "...so, your injuries have healed?" Aya finished silently, not being able to ask what he wanted, even if the drugs had loosened his tongue a bit.

Yohji looked at the other man in concern as Aya doubled over and he moved just a little bit closer until their sides were touching. After a moment, he reached out, touching gently the area Aya had been clutching at earlier. Was it a wound or a side effect of whatever drug they'd given Aya?

He leaned in close, allowing him to speak more quietly and still have Aya hear it. "I don't know," he answered truthfully. "There was a doctor the other day, he didn't seem to know anything about me. If they were Kritiker, you'd think they'd know everything." And if it was an attempt to deal with their mental problems so they could still function as killers, then they'd definitely know about them. "They use different names too." He bit his lip, mulling over some of the more unpleasant theories he'd come up with, but he needed to know more before he could elaborate.

He flashed Aya a smile. "Me? I'm just fantastic." He took a deep breath, voice cracking slightly as he continued. "How can you ask that? So fucking calm! I tried to kill you, Aya. You should be glad I'm locked up. You should have killed me back there."

First the warmth then Yohji's hand pressed against his side, Aya froze, gaze narrowing at the back of someone's head few pews ahead. Yohji's words struck a cord, several of them actually, and he found himself growling under his breath as his hand landed on Yohji's at his side, gripping the bony fingers with his calloused ones, trapping them against his bandaged side.

"I know!" he hissed, finally whipping his glare back at Yohji and pinning him down with it. "I know!" There was the anger he'd been trying to conceal, the guilt and fear. "You do not have to remind me of that. I knew something like that would happen, but both you and Mamoru refused to listen. Why couldn't you just break away back then?" Normally, Aya wouldn't have said any of this, maybe it was because of the situation, or the drugs, or both.

His heart was beating so fast, breathing erratic, a wave of nausea and dizziness washed over him and he doubled over again. Another arm propped to the back of the next pew, cheek leaning against his wrist, he still refused to let go of Yohji's hand.

"We need to get out of here," he whispered, the darkness behind his lids spinning. It already had changed into we instead of him at the mere sight of Yohji. Damn his attachments and stubborn nature, he'd never abandon any one of them again.

The grip was unexpected, but he made no effort to move. Far as he as concerned, Aya had every right to do whatever the hell he wanted. The laughing reply broke off when Aya turned that piercing glare at him and he couldn't even look away this time, caught by the emotions he could sense.

"'Cause that was going so well," he said, sarcasm trickling into his voice. "You saw me. I was a wreck. I'd have ended up snapping and in prison or one of these places even if I hadn't rejoined Weiss."

Aya doubled over again and Yohji touched his back with his free hand, concerned for him. Was this some kind of allergic reaction to the drugs? If it was then this could be really bad. And then he spoke, and even in the middle of looking like he was gonna' convulse, Aya was the voice of practicality.

"Easier said than done," Yohji said dryly, deciding to bite the bullet. Maybe it'd convince Aya that he wasn't worth it. "It's not exactly a normal hospital."

Shaking his head a little, Aya stayed silent for a moment, stomaching the whole situation and trying to calm down the wild spinning behind his lids. He hated being drugged, not having control over his own body, and his reaction to it was purely psychological. They knew this at Kritiker's hospitals and never let him out of the strains until it was safe. Now he'd just have to deal.

"It never is, is it?" he said finally, tired of arguing with Yohji. He fell silent again, not knowing what to say to anything Yohji had spat out. If it was true what Kurama and Yohji had said, he had no hurry anyhow. The only thing he knew that there was no doubt about Yohji being himself, always thinking about Yohji. What he had done when rejoining Weiss and what he could have done without didn't much differ from each other.

Yohji's fingers traced the edge of the bandages around Aya's chest with his free hand, noting the expanse of them. "Fuck, Aya. What the hell did you do to yourself?" he said quietly. His fingers brushed the back of Aya's hand, the best he could do really with nurses and orderlies watching over them when really he wanted to be able to properly check what those bandaes were covering. This had to be hell for Aya. He loathed hospitals and Yohji couldn't really blame him.

Aya's dry comment brough a soft snort of laughter from him. "Yeah, I guess not." he sighed softly, steeling himself for the reaction he'd probably get. "It changes at night. Doors open, you get attacked by giant scorpions and little mud... things." Now that he said it out loud and in the light of the morning... well, he really had to doubt it himself. How sure was he that it wasn't just hallucinations and nightmares? He really needed to find Cliff, make sure it'd actually occured.

"Mud things?" Aya cracked one eye open to take a glance at Yohji. "Giant scorpions? Not in mood for stupid jokes Kudoh, so you better be serious here." Along his career, six years killing for Kritiker, he'd seen monsters before. The concept didn't even surprise him too much, nothing did nowadays.

Straightening to sit up, he took Yohji's hand from his side and moved it aside, his cold fingers brushing over the playboy's knuckles before pulling back to his lap. "As for what I did... I did nothing. Someone stabbed me. Boldly at the crowded street. That's when I ended up here." He did not mention that he had not called for help, surely thinking he would die. The slight regret in the soft sigh following his words.

A smirk crossed his face and he leaned down to roll up the leg of his trousers, showing Aya the now bandaged damage from the previous night. There was a little blood on the bandage where it had soaked through. "I'm dead serious. Unless I've started hallucinating worse than usual." He let the material drop back over his leg and sat up straight, hand in his lap.

He raised an eyebrow at the startling news. Someone had dared to attack Aya in broad daylight? "An assassin?" he asked curiously. Their enemies had always worked more covertly than that.

"Dead serious, hn?" Aya muttered, eyes cast down to Yohji's leg, which the other had covered already. "I don't know. A kid ran into me on the street... " He shook his head again. His memories of the last moments were still a bit fractured, broken into senseless pictures of confusion and guilt. "Maybe? Or some desperate kid from the streets. I don't really know."

Feeling a shiver run down his spine, he wrapped his arms around himself and pulled one knee up to prop his feet to the ledge of the bench even if the bandages tightened on his skin uncomfortably. "How big is giant?" he asked silently.

A kid huh? Well, that didn't mean anything. Omi had been a kid and he'd been the most experienced one out of all of them. Not to mention that Schwartz kid and the kids at Koua Academy and... well, they seemed to have a problem with kids in general.

His concern grew when he saw the shiver shaking Aya. This wasn't right. Aya was the one who was always determined, always there. Was he ill or something? Or was this place really affecting him so badly? He forced his mind back to the topic. "Ummm, 'bout the size of a medium-size dog, I guess." Okay, it didn't sound that big now, but the other night it had been a very big deal. And scorpions did not grow to the size of dogs!

"Right..." It didn't sound too terrifying. Aya hated asking help but was not quite sure if he'd deal with anything too 'giant' on his own with an injury. Well, the night seemed far away still, there were still other things to worry over before the day would break.

Catching Yohji's worried look, Aya straightened up, steeling himself for whatever was needed this time. Weakness didn't become him after all. "What do they call you? The nurse addressed me as Seto Kiyoshi."

"You'll need a weapon," Yohji said quietly, leaning in so he could drop his voice to a near whisper. "I got some knives last night. We went to the kitchens which seems like a good bet." The knives were currently stuffed under his mattress, wrapped in the remains of his shirt from last night and underneath the journal he'd found here. It might draw attention away from the knives if anyone looked.

"Itou Ryou," he replied flatly to Aya's question. Sucky name. Sounded like a salaryman or something. Something Yohji would never have been. "I can't tell if it's trying to brainwash us, or something, or if they really believe it."

A pale, unamused smile rising to his lips, Aya nodded a little. "It's a game." It sounded like one, cruel and deathly game which would only get worse and worse any given day. Survival of the fittest or some other lame excuse of an entertainment.

He bit his teeth together for a moment, wishing he could have trusted Yohji. "They gave me a pen. If I can kill a person with it, I can improvise with other... things," he murmured with low voice, just audible enough for Yohji to hear him.

A game? The thought made him feel sick, bile rising in the back of his throat. Like Koua again, people pretending to be god and playing with lives. And this time... this time he swore he'd play better instead of getting played like the fool he was.

Somehow, the idea of Aya using a pen as a lethal weapon wasn't that surprising. "I have three knives. Find me at the start of Nightshift. They're a little small, but better than nothing." Damn, now he really wished he'd grabbed a couple more knives. Hindishgt and all that. But giving one up was better than letting Aya run around with only a pen for defence, even if he would probably be no less deadly.

"Yohji," Aya started, turning slowly to look at him. Surprise enough as it was to have Yohji suggest co-operation, it wasn't unappreciated. Aya nodded, red bangs fanning over his eyes to hide the fact that he felt a little embarrassed for no apparent reason. "So where do I find you?"

As much of a mystery the layout of the hospital still was to him, he was slowly coming out from the haze of whatever drugs had been shot to him. The throbbing pain against his side didn't much bother him, at least it reminded him of the reality and kept him checked. And he should get used to it, he needed his wits about him so no more blissful numbness if it was possible to avoid.

Before Yohji could answer he added another question. "And is there anything else I should know?" Which probably would be plenty but some things always were vital and some luxury.

Yohji caught the flicker of surprise on Aya's face and sighed. He supposed it wasn't unjustified after what he'd done. Just proved that he couldn't be trusted again. "M49," he said. "It's in the second men's block, furthest corridor from the door." He paused for a moment before adding, "I know oyu won't want me with you tonight." Might as well get that clear straight away before he started thinking and hoping.

He chewed his lip for a second, wondering what else he could tell Aya. He needed to help him as much as he could. It was only fair. And then he remembered something Aya would definitely want to know. "Schuldig is here."
