Suzaku padded softly down the hallway, slowing when they drew closer to the other patient, who seemed to be going into -- was that the Janitor's Closet? Damn it, they'd planned to go in there. He wanted to try to avoid a confrontation if possible, however, because you never knew for sure if someone was hostile or not, and dealing with potential monsters was bad enough already. On the other hand, Lelouch wanted to do inventory, and if that guy took things from the closet, they wouldn't get an accurate account. Of course, they could just ask what they guy took on the board tomorrow.

Suzaku waited until he was through the doorway and hopefully distracted before turning and whispering to Lelouch, "There's someone in there. Do you want to go in the other one for now?"

Suzaku didn't say anything to Lelouch's pique, just smiled into the darkness. Would Lelouch have preferred the accusations he would once have thrown? It didn't matter, though, and Suzaku considered the topic effectively dropped. Lelouch was stuck with Suzaku whether he liked it or not, and all the baggage his overzealous brand of loyalty carried with it.

He also gave a wary glance back at the Janitor's Closet at that laughter. Maybe some of the patients here really did belong in a mental institution, but then again he and Lelouch hardly had room to talk. Whatever, what that guy did wasn't any of their business as long as he didn't involve himself in theirs, in which case he could probably be taken care of. Suzaku instead turned his attention to the door leading in to General Storage, which was -- locked. Great. He could swing the bat at it, but it might break or at least get dented, and he wanted to save it for monster skulls. (Assuming they had skulls, oh God.) He could do it easily enough without a weapon, anyway ( ... )

Suzaku frowned in thought as he followed Lelouch back out to the hallway, thankful that they were done with that room but a bit troubled by the topic of conversation. The bottom line was just that there wasn't enough information. If only people had kept better records of what had occurred previously, or at least if they were more cooperative right now. . . It was difficult to piece everything together at this point. Lelouch would change some of that, with his neurotic bookkeeping, but that wouldn't fix the fact that only some patients were forthcoming enough -- whatever, it didn't matter right now. They had more immediate things to focus on ( ... )

As soon as the door was safely closed on whatever-it-was, Suzaku leaned Lelouch against a nearby wall, hardly sparing a glance for the surrounding hall. "Lelouch?" he muttered, holding him up and staring into his face worriedly. "Lelouch, what's wrong? What did it do to you?" He didn't care that they'd left Lelouch's flashlight back there, not because he wasn't keen on going back to get it; it was simply that his fear for Lelouch didn't leave room for any other thoughts. Were Landel's creatures intentionally singling out his Prince, or did he just have bad luck? If he'd been marked as a target, this was going to get even more dangerous than it was already.

Suzaku grit his teeth. What was he supposed to do, if he didn't even know what was wrong? And Lelouch couldn't tell him, couldn't even talk. "Lelouch!" He started to shake him gently, trying to capture his attention, to snap him out of whatever had taken hold of his senses. Frustration clawed at his insides. "Lelouch!" He'd rarely felt so lost.

Had that thing had some kind of effect on his nervous system? If so, there wasn't really anything Suzaku had at his disposal to ease the symptoms, and even if he had some kind of drug on hand, he didn't know enough about it to be sure if he was giving him the right thing. Even if he could be sure of what was wrong in the first place, which he wasn't. Should he just drag him back to his room? And then what, sit around and hope he got better on his own? He'd rarely felt so useless as someone's knight, but he was really living up to his reputation now, wasn't he? As expected of Suzaku Kururugi. He'd warned Lelouch that he made a terrible knight, hadn't he? "Look, just. . ." he ( ... )

"What happened?"

Seeing the two of them exit the closet in that state, Matt took the opportunity to get close under the guise of concern for another patient. There were not obvious wounds that he could see, which didn't mean he hadn't hit his head or something, but given what had happened a couple of other times he'd been up here... Well, it was a good situation, he supposed, even if it was unlikely he'd be getting anything out of Lelouch any time soon.

He approached them quickly, but didn't reach out to offer immediate aid or support on the chance that Suzaku was too protective for that. "I didn't hear anything, well, monstrous. Did he take a tumble into something?"

Suzaku looked around in surprise at the new voice; he hadn't even heard him approach, he'd been so preoccupied. Some distant part of his mind recognized him as the man who'd been dawdling in the hall earlier, but not much else mattered when he had Lelouch to worry about. Lelouch, who he'd confirmed was aware of his surroundings and understood what Suzaku was saying. That was a step in the right direction, but it didn't do much to ease Suzaku's frustration, not when Lelouch didn't have the ability to speak ( ... )

That had to be it, then. A weird shadow... "Did it get really cold all of a sudden? Your friend would have felt it more." He shook his head. "I've run into those things up here before, and they've been mentioned on the bulletin, I'm pretty sure."

He bent down a little in order to get a better view of Lelouch's face without shining his light directly into it. The utter lifelessness we just like what had happened to Mello. "Their touch leaves you in a state of total apathy. If that's what it was, then Lelouch here shouldn't be in any physical pain. He's just lost all will to do much of anything." Thankfully, the time he'd run into one himself night had ended right after. Still, the fact that he'd been feeling scant traces of it the next morning said something.

"Do you have any guess as to how long he was in contact with it?"

Suzaku frowned. "It did seem kind of cold, yeah. . ." Lelouch's blinked response backed him up. He was glad he'd made the decision to trust this stranger, since he apparently did know something about it. If he was right. There was no reason to assume the man knew what he was talking about, and if the problem was something else entirely it could be disastrous to think this was just a case of terrible apathy. Then again, Lelouch really wasn't in pain, so. . .

"Is there anything we can do for it? Or does it just wear off?" He'd feel better if he could actually do something, but he didn't see what could be done to cure something like that. Even so, the idea of sitting around and waiting made him uneasy, especially if the newcomer's diagnosis was incorrect. "He was -- it couldn't have been more than a couple minutes. It seemed to get worse when I was dragging him away from it," he added, not sure if that bit of information would help, but feeling he should give a complete account nonetheless.

"It should wear off over time, but depending on the length of exposure... I'm sorry, I can't give you an exact estimate. I've witnessed three cases aside from this one, though. Two others and myself." Matt placed a hand on his chin, making an effort to look thoughtful even though everything he needed to say was already on the tip of his tongue ( ... )

Suzaku sighed. That information wasn't the most exact, and not very comforting -- they'd definitely been in there for more than a brief moment, and if Lelouch was out of commission for the rest of the night, it would make them both more vulnerable. Still, it was a relief that the problem wasn't anything worse, once again assuming Robin was right.

"I guess. . . I'll just wait around for a little while to see if he gets any better, and if not I'll get him back to his room somehow. Assuming we don't get attacked in the meantime," he added with a wary glance around the dark hallway. "Doesn't look like there's much else I can do. Thank you so much for going out of your way to help us, by the way." He finally tore his eyes from Lelouch's slack face and managed a weak smile in Robin's direction. "I'm Suzaku and, well, you already know this is Lelouch."
