The longer Nathan stayed out, however, the more foolish he felt. He didn't know where he was going, really, and he had no real objectives. He kept telling himself to keep moving, but why? What was there to find? Sure, he had hardly seen the entire place during that day -- he was beginning to feel like the place was massive -- but he didn't really think he was going to find a way out.
Unless he could get back to the courtyard -- to fresh air -- and fly out. But where would he go? Back home? Obviously, Heidi had committed him here, so he was pretty sure that he wouldn't be welcome in their home. And Ma? Well, Nathan wasn't really ready to go down that avenue just yet. He didn't have any other place, unless Peter would let him stay with--
Nathan stopped, almost mid-stride, suddenly, his stomach dropping.
Peter's dead, he reminded himself.
But Peter's apartment might still be there. If their mother hadn't already boxed everything up and released it, which Nathan hoped she wouldn't be stupid enough to do without him. He could stay there. He just needed to figure out where he was, exactly -- Godot had claimed New Jersey, so the lights from Manhattan should be easy enough to see from high up. He could fly towards those, and slip in undetected, and to hell with this place.
He walked on, quickly, not even noticing the young girl standing in the hall. It was unlike him, but his mind was already so full it was as if she'd been overlooked. He continued through the open double doors, hoping he remembered the correct route. Nathan was going to win the man on the intercom's "game", of that, he was certain.
