Night 41: F-A Block Hallway

There was no sign of anyone else here. Maybe she was early - she had left her room immediately, after all. The rest of the team should be here soon.

Soma took up position on the other side of the hallway so she faced the F-blocks and waited.

A few strides had brought Taura to the mouth of the larger hallway and the door to the women's bathroom. She wasn't quite sure why they were meeting here, but here she was. Perhaps it was just convenience, if Himura and Kamiya were both women's names -- she wasn't exactly sure.

Another woman was standing sentry over the ends of the hallway. Taura transferred her flashlight to her left hand and walked over next to her, mirroring her position.

She was hesitant to break the silence, though, and merely nodded a greeting.

A considerably taller woman had emerged from the same hallway as Soma. She was very obviously not Senna, but she could just as well be one of the other two people in her group. Only one way to find out.

Soma nodded back, tilting her head upward to meet the other woman's gaze. "Excuse me, but are you Miss Sumeragi or Miss Meche?"

"Nope." She shook her head. "Name's Taura. And I don't suppose you're Himura or Kamiya -- I'm not even sure if either of them is a 'Miss'."

Taura glanced around, but no-one and nothing else had entered the area. "Guess we're both the first ones here." She tucked her flashlight under her arm and started trying to detangle her hair with her fingers. It was frizzing badly -- dirtside air was always so much more humid on any but the most arid planets.

Good timing, it looked like! "I'm Sumeragi," Hokuto spoke up, nodding to the girl who had asked. "Call me Hokuto."

The person she'd spoken to was obviously a soldier of some type; she couldn't help but think of Signum. I hope we see her again... Still, she smiled at both of them, friendly as ever.

Soma shook her head as well at Taura. "I'm neither. My name is Soma Peries; it's nice to meet you."

At this point she had completely run out of things to talk about, so it was just as well that one of her teammates had decided to show up. She turned, nodding and offering a slight, hesitant smile in return.

"I'm Soma Peries," she repeated, "but Soma is fine. Good evening, Hokuto."

Taura nodded to both of them. "I'll let you get on with it, then. Good luck!" She didn't know what they were planning, but it couldn't hurt to wish them luck, could it? She stepped back a few paces, putting a couple meters in between her and the other group.

Hokuto waved to the other girl, then turned to Soma. "Good evening! It's nice to meet you; have you been with Arts & Crafts long?" It was good to still be part of it; she wanted to stay with the shinigami. Even if it didn't get her any letters of recommendation later on.

"Good luck to you as well," responded Soma as Taura left. The taller woman moved like a soldier, she noted almost subconsciously - either that, or she was used to fighting.

Hokuto, like most of the people she'd spoken to, appeared to be about Soma's age. And, she couldn't help noticing, she was very...conspicuously dressed. There were quite a few people here who seemed to have clothing other than what the institute provided; she wondered briefly where they had gotten it, and if it were at all possible to get her uniform back. It wouldn't give her any significant advantage, it was true, but it was the principle of the thing.

"It's nice to meet you too. I only arrived here two nights ago, so I didn't start working with them until last night. Have you?"

"If two weeks counts as 'long'," Hokuto said dryly. "It feels like it." She'd adjusted, as much as anyone could, but the days and nights still felt very long.

"So where are you from? And when?" She laughed a little. "I'm from Tokyo, Japan, in 1992."

"Two weeks is the longest I've heard of anyone I've spoken to so far." It didn't seem like very long to Soma, but she supposed she could understand how the long days and nights could begin to take their toll on anyone.

The standard conversation starters here seemed to be where and when someone was from, and Soma had no problems with that. At least they were questions that were easily answered. "I was living in Russia before I arrived here - the year was 2309. There seem to be a lot of people from the late twentieth century here."

"It's actually been a little more than that, too; I got here a few days before I learned much about clubs. I wasn't sure where I'd fit either; at home I was a good fighter, but here I can barely hold my own." Hokuto could have quite the ego, but she wasn't too proud to admit the truth.

"I'm probably not, either." It was a lot harder for Soma to admit that - it was something she definitely wasn't used to. "I was one of the best pilots in the Human Reform League before I arrived, but they've dulled my reflexes and my quantum brain waves, and so many people here have such strange powers. I don't have any of those."

She tilted her head a little; Hokuto hadn't struck her as the fighting type, but first impressions could be wrong. "What did you fight back home?"

"Mostly tournament opponents," Hokuto admitted. "Real fights were rare... well, there was this one night against a couple of cops. That time I had to cheat a little with magic."

She kept calling her life ordinary, but in a lot of ways... it kind of hadn't been.

Magic? A different Tokyo and a different 1992, then. Soma was beginning to wonder just how many universes were represented here. It was all starting to sound even more ridiculous than it originally had.

"What sort of a tournament was it?" Reserved as she normally was, her natural curiosity was beginning to kick in. Besides, the idea of a tournament naturally appealed to her.

"Martial arts--I'm a black belt. I know a little kendo, too, but fortunately I'm better with a bo." Hokuto touched the shovel slung across her back. "It doesn't look the greatest, but it's almost as good as a bladed stuff and I didn't have to wait for any alchemists to get around to me.

"So you're used to fighting from a cockpit? Yikes--do you know hand-to-hand, too, or you're mostly used to weapons like blasters?"

Martial arts - Soma was intrigued. Maybe Hokuto could teach her a thing or two. Soma was looking for a teacher, after all. She might ask later.

"All of the fighting I've seen so far has been from a cockpit. I was taught basic hand-to-hand combat techniques in training, but I didn't have the chance to put it into actual practice back home." A pity, really, considering piloting was out of the question here. "It's too bad I don't have my mobile suit with me."
