Kibitoshin rolled out of bed and hit the floor with a loud thump.

That was going to leave a mark. He groaned softly, rubbing his lower back with the one hand he could get free from the sheets he seemed to have entangled himself in- and then froze. Something, he decided, was not right. For a moment he lay still, stunned and entangled in soft white linen as he tried to work it out. Maybe it was the sheets. They were a lot nicer than his usual ones. Or maybe it was the time? Though it didn’t feel especially early… this was just too confusing!

Sighing, he brought a slim white hand up to his head and scratched it helplessly. The answer was probably staring him in the-

Wait. Slim, white hand?!

Giving what could only be described as a shriek of horror, he thrashed about wildly, trying to get the blankets off of his head. He’d changed colour! He’d actually changed colour! The Elder had always told him that he was as white as a sheet! And… and… oh, no, what if he had some terrible tropical disease?!

“Mr. Williams? Are you okay?”

Suddenly the sheets were pulled from around him and Kibitoshin found himself looking at a concerned young Earth woman dressed in white. She looked, he thought, an awful lot like a nurse.

Oh.

In a flash, Kibitoshin was on his feet, fists clenched frantically. “Is it serious? Am I going to die?!” There was a slightly hysterical pang to his voice; he tried to steady it and failed utterly. “Tell to me straight!”

To his surprise, the woman simply laughed. “You’re not going to die, Mr. Williams. You’re in perfect physical condition.”

He stared at her. Was she mad? “But… but… I’m…”

“But your mind, on the other hand…” She smiled warmly. “Don’t worry. Everything will be okay.”
