Nightshift 40: Stairwell by Waiting Room/Lobby 1

[ From here.]Scourge ascended the stairs carefully, squinting up into the darkness and wondering for the first time whether he should have brought the flashlight. He'd gathered that most humans didn't see quite as well as he did in the dark but this was a bit much even for him. He kept hold of the handrail with one hand and gripped his frying pan ( Read more... )

The stairwell was generally peaceful. Aside from one other patient, the area appeared devoid of life. The modest light at his disposal found nothing apart from the obvious. Satisfied, Nigredo tilted the beamed to the ground and climbed, one hand keeping its position against the wall.

He still wasn't sure on where to go upon reaching the top. One could wander for only so long...

The stairwell was empty when Mitsuru went through. Of course, plenty of things could maneuver in the silence and catch her unaware. There was nothing ahead of her, and a brief glance showed nothing behind her, either. After another moment, she aimed the flashlight at the ceiling, remembering Iori mentioning something about people in horror movies never looking up.

Then again, she could see why. There was nothing there, but better safe than sorry. After reassuring herself of that, Mitsuru continued up the stairs.

The stairwell was completely empty when Tyki arrived, but the Noah wasn't going to complain. Without his powers, fighting would be a pretty bothersome thing to do in this place. With a shrug he began climbing the stairs, not sure in which direction to head when he reached the top.

The stairs were more difficult, since it meant several blind spots heading up where he couldn't see Tyki, but he waited until the man had almost reached the top before creeping through the darkness to the base of the stairs himself. He could see pretty well in the dark, so he didn't have to worry about the beam of a torch giving him away, but he still wanted to be careful. Where was Tyki heading?

The last few times he'd gone up the stairs, it hadn't ended particularly well, so he was kind of apprehensive about going up them again. However, he'd started following and if someone else was hurt because he'd given up the chase too soon, he wouldn't be able to forgive himself.

Fortunately for Allen, the plan of waiting below the stairs until Tyki had reached the top had been a clever move. If he had gone up earlier, the Noah probably would have heard the boy's footsteps. In any case, he hadn't seen the Exorcist tailing him. Yet.

After he reached the top, he slipped into the next hallway.

There were, predictably, fewer people in the stairwell. Javert kept his eyes peeled for any motion in the shadows; it seemed an ideal place to attack for him.

S.T. followed, moving as quietly as he could. Javert -- he corrected his mental pronunciation to something vaguely French -- Javert was moving forward with both caution and confidence. Guy clearly knew his way around.

S.T. was tempted to ask how long he'd been here, but running silent, running deep seemed a better plan. Plenty of time to chit-chat when they'd surfaced on the second floor.

The beam of the flashlight illuminated enough of the stairway for Ken to silently begin climbing up. Being in such a narrow space with terrible footing for any potential fight made him want out of there as soon as possible, and he didn't really like the feeling of having Crawford watching his back either.

Just why the hell did he agree to this again?
