Night 40: F01-F10 Hallway

Apr 17, 2009 21:54

[ From here. Outside F3]Because she needed to get to Orihime and Shiki's room before either of them left, Ururu had practically run the short distance down the halls. Normally she might not, since she knew better than to run inside. Tessai-san didn't like it when Jinta-kun did that at the shop especially, since something usually ended up broken ( Read more... )

It was one thing to be aware of the kinds of things that happened in this place at night, but it was by far quite another to actually have the staff appear at the door to remove one's roommate from before one's very eyes.

Not that Ayumu would have bothered to attempt to fight them off - it had become clear, both from what she'd read and her own observations, that those who ran this place had carefully arranged things to make certain they always had the advantage. What little she could have done, unarmed but for one small blade, against those who used force and drugs to enforce their will, could hardly have made any difference. And besides, she wasn't the type for a head-on attack anyway. Best to bide her time and strike where needed, not end up sedated for the night.

That would certainly have interfered with her plans for the evening.

Had it been any other night, she might have gone looking for Yuffie once the doors opened. Last night had been experiments, so tonight would be brainwashed patients, and it would have been interesting to see just what her roommate was capable of. It would also, however, have been potentially dangerous to investigate such, so...perhaps she wouldn't have. Still, though.

Ayumu frowned slightly at the sound of the so-called Head Doctor's announcements: something was distinctly off, and she'd likely need to see what she could find out. But not now. For now she mentally filed away the man's words and focused on her own preparations for the night. Robin would hopefully be there soon, after his meeting with Homura, and she had best be ready.

[from here]

Matt approached the door carefully. He was meeting a woman alone in her room. Granted the circumstances could have been better, but that didn't change matters. Sen had asked to meet him and he'd suggested her room without even thinking about it. Now he had a nervous feeling in his stomach almost worse than the one he had before facing Homura.

She was just a woman with a suspicious interest in him. No big deal, right? Yeah, because he certainly had to deal with those often...

He knocked on the door. "Hey, Sen? It's me, Robin. You wanted to talk?"

The room had been tidied appropriately well before the knock on the door, with Ayumu's small arsenal and journal alike hidden away, but she still hesitated a moment before going to open the door. Once she did, though, she first opened it only a crack, barely enough to verify her visitor's identity. "Robin-han?" Her tone was mix of worry and relief, with just a hint that she was pleased to see him underneath it. "It is you."

Only then did she open the door the rest of the way and step back to allow him to enter. She'd pulled the blanket off her bed and wrapped it around herself, clutching it tightly as though it were a shield. "I'm sorry, I just...I'm sure they wouldn't be coming back, not after dark, but I was still afraid..." Ayumu glanced down at the floor as she trailed off, as though mildly embarassed.

This was unexpected. Matt peered inside the room before entering, seeing no one else. Her roommate must have left before he'd arrived. "Who do you mean? Was some of the staff here?" That could also explain the absence of her roommate, and why the woman was on edge. He hadn't heard of other patients going between rooms during the dinner shift (and if they could he needed to learn how).

Somewhere in the back of his mind he had to remind himself that this could all be an act still, but it wouldn't do him any good to take it just as that. She seemed genuinely afraid. "It's fine now. I got here without any trouble." Not that he could offer much protection.

"They were, during dinner." Ayumu pulled the blanket a little tighter about herself, keeping her attention fixed on the floor. "They came and...and took my roommate."

She had to admit that she'd been concerned for a minute that they were there for her instead, and hadn't planned to go quietly. Not that Yuffie had, of course; quite the opposite. And it seemed the staff had been concerned that she might try to help, considering the way one of them had moved to watch her specifically as Yuffie was dragged off. That certainly wouldn't make her look less suspicious, now would it.

After a moment's pause she lifted her head again, peeking up at him through her lashes almost shyly. "I'm glad you're here now, though. And so quickly...didn't you have to meet someone before?" Her tone was indifferent at that; Sen didn't particularly care about who he was meeting with, as long as he finished it quickly and made it to her.

So the spunky girl from the night before had been taken for Special Counseling. Matt was sure that information would have been useful to someone, but he wasn't going to head out and start spreading the word. Sen didn't look like she was going anywhere either.

He shrugged at her question. "It wasn't a very long meeting." Important, yes, but not very long. Even so, it should have taken a noticeable amount of time. The hours passed strangely in this place, though. He knew that. They could move at different speeds until he joined up with her. It was far too surreal to think about.

The scare seemed to have gotten her over some of her feelings from earlier that day. He didn't know if that would make things any less awkward. "What did you want to see me about?"

Not very long? If Homura had wanted to speak to him about what Ayumu thought they were going to talk about, judging from what Okita had said on the board, then Robin must have agreed to work for him. Which meant working with her, whether Robin knew it or not.

This could begin to get somewhat complicated. That, though, was when the job was the most interesting. When she had to stay focused lest she slip somewhere and make the situation more dangerous. Exhausting, perhaps, but hopefully worthwhile.

"I wanted to talk to you about...well, about earlier. And before that." In the dim light it would be difficult to see a blush, but Ayumu shifted a little, lowering her eyes again and moving a little closer, just a little bit, without making it obvious she was doing so.

"I don't understand what you want, or what you're thinking. Maybe it's just that we're from...from different places. But I thought you...we...well..." Ayumu hesitated, swallowed, and tugged at the blanket again. "Did you, ah, have...someone, back at home?"

Oh dear. And it was back to this again. Why yes, he had plenty of women back at home. In his head and on the internet. And inflatable under your bed, came a thought in Mello's voice and he wanted to shoot himself.

He understood this woman about as much as she understood him, probably. Not well. What did she want? Had dying given him sudden sex appeal? There were always those games where the hero came back after something tragic stronger than ever, but he didn't have many hero qualities.

He wanted to believe she was for real. "Uh, well... N-no..."

"I like you, Robin-ha..." Ayumu paused, shook her head slightly, and continued, taking a step closer. She glanced up at him again, meeting his eyes with a hesitant kind of courage, and as she corrected herself her voice was soft. "Robin. I like you quite a bit. But you don't seem to believe me."

She released her hold on the blanket enough to reach out, brushing her fingertips across the front of his vest as she slid just that little bit closer. It was almost a challenge, to see if he would reject her - but at the same time there seemed to be a hint of worry in her eyes, fear that he might actually do so. "And...and I wanted to prove it to you."

Whoa. Hey. Whoa. Matt's eyes widened considerably as he came to the slow realization that Sen might not actually be wearing anything underneath the blanket she had wrapped around her. Why was she not wearing anything under the blanket? Was this really an important question? Wasn't there supposed to be dating before this sort of thing took place? Matt's whole mental picture of how getting with a woman was supposed to work wasn't matching up here at all. Whatever time period Sen was from had to be full of unattractive men. Perhaps it was his hygiene. Did they have tooth brushes back in that era of Japan?

Focus, Matt. No, don't focus too hard. Move the eyes elsewhere. Or don't. He was completely lost as to how he should respond. Some part of him, that was slowly getting pushed to the background, was yelling at him to be cautious, while the part doing the pushing was screaming why are you hesitating , a hot chick wants you.

"R-right. Well." He raised his hands from his sides, found himself at a loss on what to do with them, then set them down again. "It's just a bit hard to, uh, haven't I said this already? In what way do you mean to, uh..."

Well, so far so good, though the man's reaction only solidified Ayumu's suspicions as to his lack of experience with women. Whatever a "computer technician" did, clearly it kept him away from certain things, which meant that she would certainly have to be careful not to push too hard - but at the same time, to not let him think too much, either.

She allowed a measure of hope to creep into her expression, reassured by the fact that he wasn't trying to push her away, even though uncertainty remained. He certainly wasn't encouraging anything, of course, but still there wasn't any outright rejection.

The blanket slipped just a little more away from her bare shoulder as she moved one more step closer, hand sliding across his vest to curl lightly around the sleeve opening. Just a little bit of pull there encouraged him to move toward her as well, and she leaned in to cut off his stammering with a kiss.

Oh hell. If Matt was a more chivalrous man, he might have insisted that it was far too soon for her to be approaching him like this, and that they should take things slowly and rationally. But Matt was far from being a chivalrous man.

They'd already kissed before. This was nothing new. Her being this close to him while there was so little between him and her bare skin, however, was going to drive him crazy. He let her silence him, and after the initial freezing-up reaction he allowed himself to calm, placing shaky hands on her shoulders.

The kiss began almost hesitantly, as though "Sen" was surprised at her own daring. With the positive reaction (or, at least, a lack of a negative one), though, it didn't remain such for very long, and she leaned into the kiss, her hand closing tightly about the fabric of his vest.

As she did she pressed against him, exerting just enough pressure to encourage him to step back without being blatantly obvious about it. Back, farther into the room, toward the nearest bed. (Which happened to be Yuffie's, but it wasn't as though her roommate was there to object.)

With her attention ostensibly focused on other things, though, her one-handed grip on the blanket went slack, and it slid farther down her arms until Robin's hands on her shoulders found only bare skin.

Matt let himself be led back easily, though not without wondering if it was wrong to let her be in charge. He was a bit too weak in the knees to offer much argument at this point either way, especially with how her blanket was falling down, Jesus Christ.

The back of his calves hit the edge of the bed and he sat down on it automatically, pulling away from her a bit in the process. That nagging voice was still there. This was too easy. Things shouldn't be going this way.

What if she was being controlled by someone or something. What if she was some sort of alien hive-mother, looking for a victim to help spawn hundreds of little alien larvae that would slowly grow in him and eat him away form the inside out before turning on the rest of the Institute's populace?

That was an overactive imagination. And really? Who the fuck cared?

"Shit," he managed weakly.

The blanket had slowly slid down even more until it was held in place only by virtue of the fact that Ayumu was too close to him for it to fall any farther. Once Robin sat, though, he pulled away enough that it dropped; she caught it before it could fall completely away, but the way she held it bunched just before her breasts barely hid anything at all.

Ayumu lowered herself to sit beside him a little less abruptly, lifting her free hand to gently brush his hair from his forehead, fingertips trailing lightly down along his cheek. "I've always been alone," she said, voice soft enough to be barely audible. "Alone, and scared, and here...I'm tired of it."

Though she'd been taking the lead up to that point, now she hesitated a little, as though waiting for some kind of cue from him before pressing any farther. "I like you, Robin," she repeated, her hand trembling for an instant against his skin as her eyes met his with an almost pleading look.

Alone? How had a woman looking like Sen did manage to be alone? There was still the different time periods to consider, but something about that just didn't seem right to Matt. The little warning voice that had just started to pick up volume again was easily quashed, however, as the blanket continued to slip. It was becoming increasingly difficult to keep his eyes anywhere else.

He swallowed thickly. "I, uh, I like you too." His voice was a bit shaky as he answered. Did he love her? No. He hadn't known her long enough to have developed those sort of feelings, even if she'd seemed very interested in being with him. Did he like her enough to be willing to try a little physical intimacy? Hell yes.
