Day 40: Intercom, Evening

Apr 14, 2009 06:18

There wasn't any jingle as the intercom came on; it sounded like the Head Doctor was still having issues with the system, and it also seemed like he was none too pleased about it.

"Well, everyone, I hope that you all had more fun this last shift than I did! Hahahaaa ( Read more... )

The intercom signaling dinner time was a mixed blessing, as far as Daphne was concerned. On the one hand, the previous night's solitary dining period had given her far too much time alone with her own thoughts, and she had no reason to anticipate a change for the upcoming one. Sure, she had more to think about than simple panic over the crippling of her abilities and the sense of being trapped, but none of it was the sort of thing she wanted to replay over and over either. On the other hand, dinner meant a lack of further chances to damage the space-time continuum. She made a mental note to ask Hiro how the hell he juggled the dilemma the next time she saw him. Of course, the next time she saw Hiro would probably not come until after she had found a way out of the hospital, so it would be a moot point ( ... )

This was not her room. Beatrix was none too pleased to find herself herded to a room in an entirely different hallway than the one F33 was in. She'd had too much stuff hidden in that room, too many important things. She could deal with the loss of the drugs and medical supplies. She could even deal with the loss of some of the miscellaneous items. What she could not deal with was the loss of her sword and the bitch's severed braid. Injured as she was, moving quite slowly with her left arm in a sling to keep her heavily bandaged shoulder immobile on top of the unseen wounds and the superficial cuts that made it quite clear she'd been in a nasty fight the night before, she would kill the nurses the next time she laid eyes on them if those two items were missing ( ... )

Apparently, she wouldn't be dining solo after all. Any relief Daphne felt over the change was short-lived. Despite being obviously injured, the other woman was unnerving, though the thief was willing to chalk some of that up to her uncommunicative demeanor. She watched out of the corner of her eye, keeping up the appearance of having her attention mostly fixed on her meal, as her new roommate searched through the closet and the desk. She couldn't begin to guess what she was looking for ( ... )

Her roommate didn't seem that quick on the uptake. No matter.

"Oddly enough, yes," Beatrix replied as she went about the annoying task of trying to eat spaghetti one-handed. "I used to be in another room."

"Yeah, I noticed you weren't in here last night," Daphne replied. Strange earned itself a mental underline. She couldn't see any valid reason for the nursing staff to relocate contraband, though it did bode well for being able to smuggle things past room inspections.

Assuming she managed to get far enough down the hall to find things to smuggle.

"It is rather inconvenient," Beatrix stated. "I have someone meeting me at my previous room tonight." Assuming HK-47 was going to show.

She took the time to actually look her new roommate over. She'd seen her around, but only recently; that hair was hard to miss. Did the Bride even want to try to pretend she wasn't what she was with this roommate? It was hard to miss the col edge to her eyes that gave away she was far more dangerous than she let on. Did she care enough to keep her facade up?

No. Not really.

"You've only been here a few days, yes?"

The weight of eyes on her made the hair on the back of Daphne's neck prickle. She grinned, the quick, easy, empty grin she'd usually reserved for Arthur, or others who were similarly unnerving. "I wouldn't be surprised if being inconvenient was the point. Shake things up every now and then, make sure it's harder to know what to expect."

She laid her fork crosswise across her empty plate and leaned back in her chair, folding her hands together in her lap to keep from fidgeting. "Yeah. It's been about two days, give or take a few hours."

"If that was the case, I'd think they'd see fit to remove at least one item from my collection."

Beatrix continued to observe Daphne, somewhat curious as to the occupation of her new roommate. She knew Maki hadn't been what she'd presented herself as. Would this one be the same or would she actually admit if she was more than a 'homemaker'?

"I've been here approximately thirteen days, give of take one or two," she replied. "What was your place in society back in the world you are from?"

"Acquisitions for a bio-tech firm," Daphne replied blithely. "And some light HR work, before it went under." She could not quite have put a name to why she opted to be cagey with her roommate. Something about the observation continued to put her back up; she felt like she was being weighed and measured, and she didn't like it. She liked even less that she was unsure whether or not she would prefer to be found wanting.

"What about you?" she asked, studying Arlene curiously out of the corner of her eye.

Acquisitions and light HR work for a bio-tech firm? Beatrix almost didn't have the discipline to not snort at that. Corporate America and Silicon Valley did not allow for their people to work in more than one department, especially not something as specialized as acquisitions. That gave the Bride the same impression she got whenever she, herself, used corporate downsizing as the vague way to describe being an assassin.

Her lips curled up slightly as she responded, "Before or after I was shot?"

Daphne blinked, but didn't flinch. After watching her "employer" snap a colleague's neck as easily as breathing, verbal references to being shot no longer had the impact the might have once possessed.

A consummate actress would have flinched, but she was a thief, not a spy.

"Before you got dragged in here," she replied.

Now that was an interesting reaction.

"Revenge," Beatrix replied just as easily as if she was talking about taking the trash out.
