Day 40: Sun Room [Fourth Shift]

Apr 09, 2009 09:14

Well, that was... special. No wonder he was losing respect for this place--the fearful Martin Landel was coming undone, most probably with boredom. So scary. Even Nursey seemed a little exasperated, though that most likely had more to do with X's constant insistence to stay in the Sun Room rather than go inside the Greenhouse ( Read more... )

That actually didn't really help narrow it down, because one of those options would be tough enough to deal with right now. Trying to locate a cursed object? Without his EMF reader?

The best they could hope for was to try to locate the body first, get Croaky's history. Dean began checking the second thing on the bulletin board he'd intended to take a look at. While he'd had experience with those psychic kids that Yellow-Eyed bastard seemed to like to dick around with, he didn't think they'd all be cool like Andy or Sam (Sam was just a given, 'cause no matter what Dad said, he was gonna save him and that was just how it was gonna be: he wasn't gonna ever go darkside, not on his watch). Reading up on this news of a guy with the power to make people tell the truth didn't sit well. Maybe part of it was because so much of his life, his work, relied on lying through his teeth, impersonating others to save people and do good. But most of it was Dean was just plain creeped the fuck out. If there was anything he'd learned before and after Cold Oak, it was that these psychics could be loose canons...especially if they could control their powers and they weren't just awesome like Andy. Frowning, Dean went over what had been posted by this "Lelouch" and the others. Hadn't met the guy personally, but that didn't stop Dean from thinking he was a bit of an arrogant dick. Maybe it was all the powers goin' to his head, thinking he should get special treatment, like being a human lie detector gave you the right to be a dick.

Either way, Dean needed to know if he needed to hunt this douchebag down, if he was a threat to the others. To Sam, especially. Dean didn't care if he had some kind of sob story. He threatened Sammy, and Dean wouldn't even hesitate about sticking his bowie in between his ribs.

He'd probably even like it.

Dean turned. He had a split second to notice that hey, wait a minute, this guy had crutches, wasn't Lelou -

And that was as far as he got as he was promptly hit full force with Lelouch's power.

Dean blinked, his face slack for less than a second. Why shouldn't he do this random guy a favor? Searching the top of his head, he couldn't see a reason why. It'd be so easy to just do what he said. The hunter's face broke into a friendly smile, shrugging. There was no struggle at all as he obediently turned away from the bulletin board, the post about psychics, possible hunts, and human lie detectors forgotten already despite being literally still right behind his back. All he could remember was checking up on the posts about Croaky the ghost and trying to work out how he was gonna deal with Sammy's curse before this guy - kid, actually, he looked like he was barely college age if even that - approached him.

"Yeah, no problem," said Dean cheerfully. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, a hand on his hip as he peered down at the shorter guy with his good eye. To anyone else, it would've looked like they were just chatting it up. "I can totally do that."

Dean turned to do what he was told. It wasn't hard at all to jot out a quick message to Sammy; while he hadn't exactly made any official plans with his little brother for later, he'd just assumed they'd hook up during the night to go over the ghost's curse. But now, remembering all the things he'd read on the bulletin board, he figured it wasn't fatal and they had some time to get more prepared. The other victims had the same symptoms, but so far hadn't reported it worsening aside from finding hair in weird places. Now he'd just met this guy, but Dean had a good feeling about him just from the first impression. True, Fancy Nancy looked like some pretty boy who may have tried some dress-up after raiding Mommy's closet, but Dean trusted this hunch. He'd survived this far by going with a gut feeling. Girly, sure, but this kid also had that sharp look of intelligence he'd seen before, the same look he'd seen in Sam. Maybe he knew something.

Dean was certain he knew something, mulling it over. He had to have approached him for a reason. Right? All Dean knew was everything Fancy Nancy said seemed to make perfect sense and that it was perfectly natural to smile, nod, and bend over backward to do whatever he was asked to do and then some.

Sure. Tonight. Said like that, he might as well come along because it sounded so damn reasonable.

Dean watched Fancy Nancy take off, not at all troubled he'd done a 180 out of nowhere to cancel plans with his brother, all because a total stranger told him to.

Suddenly he felt dizzy, disoriented. The hunter blinked, giving a small shake as if coming out of a fog. Oh man, he'd knew he was getting jacked up from getting crap sleep, thanks to getting his ass kicked and worrying about Sammy and the hunts, but he didn't think he'd had it that bad. Graying out wasn't ever a good thing, especially when he was pretty sure he was missing a chunk of time - the last thing he remembered was facing the bulletin board, finishing up checking the post about Croaky, and now he was definitely facing away from it. Dean's mouth thinned into a line as he passed a hand over his face, rubbing at his eyes and knowing sooner or later, he was gonna need to get an actual night's sleep or he'd drop dead before his year even came close to being up. Getting his second wind knowing Sammy was alive and nearby didn't mean he could go all Terminator on this. A guy still needed to eat and sleep, and while Dean had no problems with the eating part, he knew he wasn't getting enough rest. Running on empty like this all the time was just a plain fool thing to do, especially when they were this deep in enemy territory.

His little lapse must've been noticed, 'cause the next thing he knew, Hello Nurse was at his side. She placed a hand on his back, looking at him with some concern.

"You okay?"

Dean shrugged. "Got a little dizzy, that's all."

"Let's get you to the Greenhouse, maybe you'll feel better there, Mr. Derringer."

Maybe. Dean would've rather just taken a nap and recharged the batteries. Still, going to this Greenhouse was a good idea, if only because he hadn't ever been there before and it never hurt to get to know more about the layout of this place personally. It beat trying to do the same thing at night, and hoping you didn't run into more friggen ghosts, witches, or whatever the hell else Landels had here to screw your shit up. There might be some plants or tools they could use to build up their practically non-existent arsenal. With that in mind, Hello Nurse ushered him out from the Sun Room, leaving behind the forgotten notes and the fact he'd flaked on his own little brother.
