Day 40: Sun Room

Apr 01, 2009 21:27

The sound of the intercom jolted Brainiac 5 back to full awareness, and he realised he'd been starting to doze off over breakfast. He hoped he hadn't been boring Clark, but it wasn't easy for him to maintain conversation considering his current condition ( Read more... )

As it turned out, it hadn't been that difficult to convince the nurse to let her spend the shift in the Sun Room rather than heading out to the Greenhouse. Daphne wasn't too disappointed to miss out on a chance to play around in the dirt. She'd had more than enough exposure to plants to last her a long time, and besides, potted ones hardly even counted ( ... )

Daphne's smile twitched just a little wider. She hadn't meant to sneak up, but it was nice to know some of the other patients weren't hyper-alert all of the time. Especially since the ability to be surprised meant Jaime, at least, was probably real, even if she wasn't sold on the physical reality of the rest of the hospital yet.

A small voice in the back of her mind piped up to inform her that this line of logic was a strange one, even by her recent standards. It quieted down again without much fuss, though. Even her common sense recognized she was flying almost blind.

"Yep. Daphne Millbrook," she replied, reaching over to give his hand a quick shake. "Nice to meet ya."

While the conversation with Allen was... enlightening (useful and amusing), Albedo found himself in a worse mood than when the shift had started--his tightly clenched anger traded for an ever-present sorrow. And that made no sense. He had found out that not only was he affected, but Nigredo as well (Rubedo as well). Daddy's little favorite wouldn't be able to use his own abominable powers against him, and that meant Albedo could do whatever he wanted to Nigredo. Nigredo couldn't touch him. And to add--Albedo found a new way to play with his dear younger sibling, since the black-haired Variant seemed to respond with such fear to a show of friendliness. But of course Nigredo saw it for what it was. Albedo smirked, but then it faded without him realizing ( ... )

What was left of breakfast was spent watching the others with varying levels of intensity. Whoever was wearing the sweat suit was clearly a ‘patient’, and the center of attention as far as the humans in their hospital attire were concerned. But there were two faces that remained unknown: the male character on the intercom, and, as Yomi recalled, the more feminine rasp of the night before ( ... )

Dark hair. Mismatched eyes. Arrogant. Smug. Annoying, the boy thought. Very annoying. More annoying was the fact that Rubedo didn't even warrant registering Albedo's presence at all in favor of that man. If favor of another. But wasn't that new and different? The boy's eyes narrowed.

Further would his eyes narrow when a voice seemed to be speaking to him. Looking up found a girl (a woman? no, a girl). Girls were distrusted, more so even than adults. They were suspicious, manipulative creatures. Things not to be trusted. If the female approached him, however, she should have a reason, and perhaps like with Angel, there was something to be gained from the interaction.

If she had came at another time, Albedo might have been more willing to play his reoccurring game, been the curious child, but seeing another with his beloved (hated and adored) twin had shifted his mindset once more, and seeing this girl right after had put him in an older state of mind--one he was ignoring, but one that was a constant irritation in the back of his ( ... )

The sesshouseki was alive, no matter what had been done to her, and she felt its presence bathing her. Was it worried? Had it been caught off guard, as well? She had to wonder if the one who'd given her the stone was watching her from afar as usual--was he amused or equally surprised something like this had happened ( ... )

Beatrix never did get to see if Ophelia truly fell the previous night or not. Before she'd gotten enough of the bitch's violet-colored blood out of her eyes to see if she'd managed to kill her with that knife, she'd woken up in her bed. As frustrating as not getting to see the actual kill was, the long blonde braid in her hand brought a satisfied smile to her face ( ... )

The last times HK had gone outside, he'd been attacked by tiny biting insects and irritatingly cheerful people. And since he wouldn't be allowed to murder anyone there, he absolutely refused to go outside, his exasperated nurse sending him to the Sun Room instead. Where he instantly discovered that he'd missed some actual fun, as soon as he saw the female assassin meatbag. "Observation: Either you attempted to hug an agribot, or I missed something even more entertaining last night."

Well, it was good to see that HK-47 hadn't been spirited away during the night. It didn't look like he'd been taken for torture either or he'd have at least complained about that first.

"I have no idea what an agribot is, but yes, you did miss the fun," the Bride replied, coldly. "What happened to you?"

"Definition: An agribot is an unintelligent droid used for the menial tasks of food crop production and collection." Just because he still had that fairly limited dictionary function packed somewhere into his (currently squishy) memory core.

The question was met with a huffy response. "Statement: I was delayed by a situation between my cell and the RV point. Unfortunately, it did not involve fatalities." He wasn't technically lying. Deciding that he could take a nap to recharge and then forgetting that he didn't have an accurate internal chronometer anymore to wake him up did in fact count as a situation standing between himself and joining up with the other assassins.

When the nurse returned to escort Kvothe out of the cafeteria, she immediately suggested he spend the shift in the Sun Room. He just nodded tiredly and followed, head down and arms wrapped around himself. She said something about taking a nap on the couch until lunch and he nodded again as he wandered over to stare at the billboard. He stood there for a long time before going to curl up on a couch and trying to think his way past the fog to sort out what actually happened last night ( ... )

Spider woke up in a comfy chair in the ... windowy thing. Someone'd put a cheap paper bib around his neck. Like the dentist. It was soaked with drool. Bah. He tried to grab it and tear it off, but the hand that met his chest was so wrapped in casts that it looked like they'd replaced his arm with frosty the snowman's dick. Argh. He was so fucking tired. Felt like a gorilla was shitting on his chest. Needed some jumpstart. None in the pocket? Damn! The nurses must've taken it. Infernal seizures ( ... )

Kvothe jerked up with a start when he realized someone was approaching him and when he heard the question he just stared. Switch hands? He was silent for a minute as he pushed himself as far away from the other man as he could on the couch, waiting for that comment to make anything resembling sense, and it stubbornly refused to. Kvothe usually was a very articulate person, but this he just didn't know what to think about. ...Switch hands? He took a closer look at the man, something just really didn't seem quite right about him. His hand was broken too, so maybe painkillers? It would explain a lot about how he'd been this morning as well, though it didn't seem to be the same as whatever they'd given Kvothe while he was unconcious. He was glad for that. "...What?" He said eventually. "No. What are you talking about?"

Spider looked down at the floor, hoping all his thoughts would sink down into his face and glom together into something usable. After either two minutes or seventeen years, he jerked his head upright again and went with what he had.

"Okay look," he said, trying to put a reasonable spin on what he knew on some level was a ridiculous idea, "Your right hand's broken. My left hand's broken. I like my left hand a lot better than my right hand, even though my right hand's the one I jack off with. Anyway, If we switch hands I will have your left hand and you will have my right hand, and those hands will work fine. Deal?"

Under other circumstances Jason would have enjoyed the chance to head out to the recreational field and stretch his legs, but the staff here wouldn't let him get away with anything even remotely entertaining and he wanted a chance to talk to that kid he'd spoken with on the bulletin board. It sounded like Harley and her Arkham buddy weren't the only psychos locked in here and if the kid was telling the truth about those bastards than they should really be his first priority. Harley was personal but Jay wouldn't stand by while anyone hurt a kid, especially not when a couple of grown men decided to gang up on him ( ... )

Brainiac 5 opened his eyes and blinked sleepily, the combination of the painkillers and sunlight making him feel even more lethargic than he had earlier. It took him a couple of moments to realise what the newcomer was talking about and he nodded in response.

"Yes, I am Brainiac 5. I apologise if I'm not particularly communicative, but you understand it's for obvious reasons," he managed, his voice still rough, and glanced down at himself. He sighed and continued in a quieter tone. "I don't think I need to ask you what you want to talk to me about."

Brainiac 5 sounded as bad as Jason had been expecting, well, apart from the smarter-than-thou way of speaking. Which was the sort of thing that normally had him looking for someone to punch. Lucky for them both he was already doing just that and it was hard to be irritated by the kid when he was so obviously feeling shitty ( ... )

"What you're dealing with?" Brainiac 5 echoed, brow furrowing slightly. "What does that mean? I understand that you're no doubt curious about what happened, and I want to warn as many people as possible about those two, but I wouldn't recommend seeking them out on your own, even just to talk. They're unbalanced and likely to attack you with little provocation ( ... )
