Nightshift 38: Waiting Room/Lobby 2

[From here.]

This was the room that she'd been brought into when Tseng had his "visit". Maybe there would be some sort of clue somewhere.

It was a simple enough room, and Elena didn't think there would be a whole lot in here. But she had to try something. Maybe there'd be a trap door or something somewhere, or hidden documents, or cameras, or ( Read more... )

The room was dark and remained that way, despite the creature shielded by the open door. Its shape, though clearly defined, had the indistinct light of a yellow moon on a clouded night, and no shadows graced the walls and floor. Indeed, unless Elena had turned to face the doorway, she might not have seen it at all.

As it moved towards her the creature's skin glimmered like metal, though no constructed joints indicated manufacture. Its steps were halting, uneven, and as it lifted a thick hand, its blades of nails clicked against each other once.

It had been long, too long, since the door of the room had been opened.

Elena didn't notice anything unusual as she scanned the floor with her flashlight. A bit of furniture, but nothing that really stood out.

Something didn't feel quite right, but she couldn't tell what it was. Her hand went to the blade of her knife, but she didn't pull it out, waiting to see if her mind was playing tricks on her.

No signs that Tseng had left anything behind, either. That was disappointing, but not entirely unexpected.

The lucentien wasted no time stalking its prey; even if it had the sentience to consider such a thing, subtlety was impossible for something with such abrupt, jerky movements.

Though eyeless, it had no problem locating the human, and aside from its quiet but uneven footsteps, the only sound in the room was the whooshing of air as one of its bladed hands swung towards the back of its intended victim.

Just as Elena started to turn around, she let out a sharp gasp as the glowing figure swung towards her. It was that same thing they'd ran into upstairs the other night!

She whipped out her knife, but it was too late, and she felt a sharp pain in her shoulder as she didn't quite manage to dodge. Cringing, she rushed forward, and attempted to plunge the blade into her attacker's skin.
