Nightshift 38: Main Hallway, 1-West

Jan 24, 2009 10:12

[From here]Ophelia slowed back to a walk as she entered the main hallway. It was a ways off in the dark, but she could just make out a small patch of light further down in the center of the hall, presumably streaming in from the Sun Room's glass ceiling. She didn't see anything yet, but there was no telling when something might suddenly jump out at ( Read more... )

[From here]

He'd managed to haul ass out the patient block before he had to rest.

Sanzo leaned against the wall. This wasn't going to be as fast as he'd expected. The wound on his stomach sent throbs of pain - warnings of what could get a lot worse - with each step. Maybe he didn't feel as light-headed as he had that night in the morgue, but he wasn't recovering as fast as he should have in this place. What the hell had happened?

He took a long drag, more of an attempt to calm his nerves. It only partially worked. If - when he finally tracked Landel down, he needed to get the full details out of him about what happened. Sanzo needed to know just how painful the fucker's death needed to be.

Kon was still humming to himself as he entered the next, more populated
hall. He was about to head straight for the stairs he'd found last night when he spotted a familiar figure to the side. It was that guy he'd been talking to earlier in the game room - Sanzo.

He didn't look so hot, the way he was leaning on the wall and though he could just be waiting for someone else, Kon figured he'd go over and check on him. The guy was stand-offish enough most people might avoid him on principle and if he was in trouble then Kon couldn't just keep walking.

"Hey man," He walked over, reaching out to touch Sanzo's shoulder. "You OK?"

Sanzo didn't hear the other patient coming until he was close enough to touch his shoulder, which was a bad sign. Normally he was a lot more alert than this. Even if he didn't have a youkai's sense, he was far more aware of his surroundings usually than most people. He was too distracted; he needed to get his shit together. Sanzo jerked slightly in surprise, then roughly brushed the hand off the sutra, before turning to look. Who the hell---?

Hmph. Him again.

Sanzo straightened up, and folded his arms into his robes. Bad enough Kenren had seen him like this. He wasn't about to let anyone else see this weakness.

The monk frowned at him. "I'm fine. What the hell are you doing here?"

It was hard to believe Kid was actually coming up to him after the shit he'd given him earlier.

Geez, touchy much? You'd think there was something wrong with his hand the way it had been brushed off like that. And- hey! He was wearing a different outfit too, just like Tsubaki had been last night! That was so not fair, why was Superboy stuck in this lame get-up when other people got their own clothes?

"Sure, I'll bet you're just fine," Kon answered sarcastically. He couldn't be sure but it really didn't look like Sanzo was fine. Even though Sanzo had gone all stiff when Kon turned up he still got the feeling something was not OK. He wondered if Mr highest-ranked-priest was used to people worrying about him except in a 'you're important to the religion' kind of way. Just another reason to stick around, besides if he did he might get to see what powers Sanzo had and that would be awesome. No matter what he might have said before.

"They let us out at night, or didn't you notice?" Kon grinned playfully and puffed his chest out. "I'm finding a way outta here. What are you doing?"

That wasn't what he'd meant, and they both knew it. No shit they were all let out, Sanzo'd been demanding to know what he was doing approaching him. Kid just had to be cute about it. Sanzo scowled at him from around the cigarette. It was clear he didn't believe the monk, but Sanzo could care less. As long as he didn't move too fast or take a blow there, he'd be fine.

"You and every other patient," Sanzo muttered. People didn't just escape, they got killed or went missing first. He doubted anyone was going to escape just like that; not until Martin Landel was dead. What the hell was with that stance? He could practically feel the confidence from here. Did he really think he'd find a way out that easily?

Sanzo snorted, dropping the cigarette to the floor. He ground it out with a sandle. "I'm looking for the son of a bitch in charge here."

Kon watched the display with the cigarette. He should probably say something, it was the sort of thing Superman would do, tell someone off for littering. But when the people running this place were keeping them locked up here and pretending it was their fault he didn't much care if people wanted to make a mess of the place. Served the staff right to have to clean up after them.

He brightened at Sanzo's answer. "Yeah? That's what I'm doing to! Someone has to kick his ass for doing this." This was perfect! Both of them had the same goal, they could team up! Privately Kon could admit that he appreciated the idea of having someone watching his back. Just 'cause he knew he could take care of the loser in charge on his own didn't mean some help wouldn't be a good thing. Especially when he was feeling less than invulnerable. And Sanzo had to feel that same or his powers were even more awesome than Kon's normally were which he seriously doubted.

"Do you know where he's hiding? I got a few ideas but it'd be easier to know straight up."

Shit. Sanzo could practically see the gears turning in his head, and the monk didn't like where it was leading. Kid had proven to be practically unruffled Sanzo's attempts to tell him to get lost. Sanzo did not want to waste bullets scaring him off either. Not when he needed them for the Head Doctor and Landel. Which meant that if he decided that he just had to tag along, Sanzo couldn't drive him off. He could bitch and try to give him a hard time, but so far, it didn't seem to have much effect.

Maybe he should go after the name again. The problem was that he had the feeling that the other patient hadn't said everything on that cloning business... and since that sounded like taboo brought on by science, Sanzo wanted to know about it.

"I've only seen him a few times, but I wanted to check the upstairs completely first," Sanzo said. "And I'm not going to just kick his ass, I'm going to kill him."

That had to be an exaggeration, right? Sanzo wouldn't actually kill someone, even the type of guy who kidnapped people and experimented on them, right? He was totally just saying that to show how bad he was going to beat the head doctor. No hero would talk about murdering someone that casually unless they didn't mean it. And he had to be a hero, he got his powers from gods and he was some sort of priest or monk or something ( ... )
