Day 38: Lunch

Jan 14, 2009 10:50

Soubi was beginning to feel the effects of a busy morning on a tired body. To make things worse, they were serving Tacos and Burritos. He could really do some with something a bit softer today. Blander. But it was hardly his biggest concern right now ( Read more... )

Talking to TK had helped. Armand now knew what was facing him. He clenched his jaw shut to keep quiet as the nurse, still fussing over his apparent lack of being fat, piled food onto his plate and steered him to a table. No matter what name he answered to, Armand could very well pick out his own food and find a seat himself. He sighed, then pulled the burritos apart to see what was in them before trying one.

[for Bridget!]

Bridget had argued (well, pouted and fussed and apparently was cute) with his nurse to allow him to bring Roger to lunch. She'd said that with only one hand, how would he eat? While there was logic in that, this was Roger and clearly much more important that silly logic.

The nurse got her way, he'd stuck his tongue out at her, and still wound up in the lunch line, sans teddy bear.

Tacos and chips on his plate, Bridget looked around for a place to sit. He grinned when he spotted Armand and quickly walked over to his table. "I hope you don't mind if I join you Mr. Armand," he said with a smile.

Armand smiled at the boy, though he hid his worry about Bridget still only having one good arm to use. "Of course, you can sit with me. You're one of my favorite people."

In fact, he stood up and tried to take the tray to help Bridget settle easily. "Do you know what this food is?" he asked. If he asked enough questions, perhaps Bridget wouldn't get a chance to ask many of his own.

Bridget beamed and blushed slightly at the help and compliment. "Thank you," he said, sitting down. "YOu're one of my favorite people too." He looked down at what Armand had on his plate.

"Yup! It's a burrito. A dish, when prepared like this anyway, that originally came from Central America. It's good," he added.

"If you recommend it, then I'll happily eat it. The nurses seem to think I'm underweight." Armand hovered until he was certain Bridget had his situation under control. "They do have a lot of strange food here," he commented. "I don't recognize many things." Talking about food was safe. Even admitting his ignorance wasn't embarrassing.

"They still won't let you have Roger?" he asked. More questions. Good.

Bridget made a face. "I got to have him this morning, but they said he'd only get dirty if he came with me to lunch." Reaching up and brushing back a bit of his hair, he smiled and shrugged one shoulder.

"I can go get him after lunch though." He looked Armand over with a worried eye. "Are you alright? I haven't spoken to you in what feels like forever."

That he was allowed Roger during non-mealtimes was something. Armand nodded. "It's--" he began, then realized he'd have to answer the question first. "Physically, I'm fine. It has been a while hasn't it? The nurses are silly to think you'd get Roger dirty. You value Roger very highly."

He didn't think that answer would satisfy Bridget, but it was completely true. Armand tore into the burrito thing with a fork.

Physically? Bridget frowned. "What about otherwise? Did something happen?" He was worried for his friend. Armand seemed to be more evasive than usual.

"Are your other friends okay?" What if Armand had lost someone? One of the people listed as missing or dead? That would be horrible!

Three questions! Armand tried not to panic as he answers crowded into his mind. "I--something is wrong with me. I was taken by the doctors last night, and one of them injected me with a purple fluid, some kind of truth serum Alec called it." He put down his fork to hide his face behind his hands. "I think TK-622 and Alec are well. I haven't seen Dr. Uzuki."

Bridget's eyes widened and he brought his hand to his mouth. "A truth serum? Oh my gosh, and I'm asking you all these questions! I'm so sorry!"

He wanted to ask more, find out how Armand was coping but ... if he had to tell the truth, that could be almost like ... prying into things he shouldn't know. "I won't ask you any else." He nodded once and tried a warm smile. "I'll, um, I'll keep an eye out for Dr. Uzuki for you."

"Yes," Armand answered shakily. "You didn't know... I'm not upset with you." He was upset with himself. "I must answer all questions asked me, and... can't lie even otherwise. I talked with M--TK for a while this morning." He wasn't as worried about this as he could have been, but that didn't mean he wasn't worried. He simply didn't want to break down in front of Bridget. The poor child had enough worries of his own.

"I didn't want to worry you. You're still recovering."

Bridget waved his free hand. "I'll get better faster if I think about other things, like my friends." He nodded at that.

"And besides, I like to worry about my friends. Means I might still be able to do something to help. And I really want to help you." He just wasn't sure how....

"You like to worry?" That was something he hadn't considered. He could almost say the same of himself. "It almost a relief to think of someone else, isn't it?"

Armand shrugged and tried to smile. "I do need to stop asking myself what this place can do worse to me. They keep finding more." He wanted to see Bridget smile back. The boy's smiles always warmed his heart.

Bridget beamed back and nodded. "It is! It's nice to have people to care about, and to know that someone cares about you too." It was hard not to ask questions though...

"Well, there can be good things too," he pointed out. "You just have to look for them."

"Little good here comes from those who run it, not intentionally." He held very still as he the idea of hugging Bridget very tightly came to him. He let it pass, knowing that his enthusiasm wouldn't be appreciated by the staff. "I am lucky to have friends, though."

"That's true," Bridget agreed with a nod. "But lots of good comes from the people here, the other ones trapped I mean." He took a bite of his taco, thinking.

"And you'll always have friends here," he added finally with a warm grin. "As long as Roger and myself are around."
