Day 38: Breakfast

Jan 06, 2009 16:02

What a singularly delightful evening he'd had. It was dampened, of course, by two things, but those were small things and he supposed he could overlook them for now. First was that his powers had still not returned. If he truly were on punishment as he thought, though, he couldn't very well expect those to come back. Second was that the little ( Read more... )

Sanzo sat down with a tiny wince, and regarded the tray before him warily. He was actually pretty damn hungry for once, but at the same time, he wasn't sure how much he could eat without being sick. Physically, he was starting to feel a little better... but mentally, he couldn't feel more drained. The last day and night had been a gigantic clusterfuck in themselves, spaced within a few hours.

At least something had come from last night, even if Sanzo hadn't gone too far. For one, Landel hadn't fucked Goku over. The kid was alright.

...But there was still the matter of keeping him out of the basement.

The moron hadn't exactly agreed with Sanzo's demands. At least not looked Sanzo in the eyes and promised he wouldn't. If there was something the monkey couldn't do, it was lie to Sanzo's face and do a decent job of it.

Goku hadn't exactly disagreed, but fuck, if it didn't piss him off that Goku tried to wheedle around it. When the hell did he start mouthing off this much? Sanzo honestly didn't remember it happening that often. At ( ... )

[This seat taken?]

The nurse that had arrived to bring Callisto to breakfast that morning had just barely avoided being roughly shoved out of the way as the blonde made her own way out, radiating agitation. This was the second night in a row she'd barely gotten anywhere, and while it was a marked improvement over the night before, she wasn't willing to deal with these roadblocks continuously. She was going to see this new promised area.

By the time she had her breakfast in hand, she'd calmed down a little. Getting angry enough that the staff stuck toxins in her again would only hinder her chances of nightly exploration. Instead, she busied herself with finding a familiar face and sitting down across from it with a smile.

"Good morning," she greeted, far too cheerful sounding for it to be honest. "And how are we doing this morning? Still living, I see."

Maybe save a bullet for the bitch suddenly sitting down across from him, he amended. Sanzo's face suddenly soured. She'd had her fun yesterday, what the hell was she doing back? Maybe he was feeling a little less like shit, but that didn't mean he wanted to deal with more hassle than he had to.

And Callisto was definitely more than just that, she was a royal pain in the ass. He had to put up with Gojyo being an idiot, but only because he occassionally had his uses. The same couldn't be said about Callisto.

"You can get the hell up and move on. I'm not in the mood for your shit." he said.

"Aww..." Callisto's hurt expression was just as believable as her last. She made no move to do as he asked, instead picking at one of the oddly wrapped sausages on her plate. "But I'm always in the mood to see you." This was only half-true, of course. As much as she liked toying with the man, she had no doubt there would be times when His Royal Grumpiness wouldn't be needed on the scene. For now, she could have her fun.

She took a quick look around the room, just long enough to not catch sight of the boy Sanzo was so fond of. "Where's your little friend gone, by the way? I'm sure he was ecstatic to see you."

Sanzo folded his arms across his chest. He wasn't taken in by that expression for second. He still didn't see why Qui-Gon had let her come along in the first place, when it only took a glance to see she was bad news.

"I don't care. Leave," he said, glaring. Why couldn't she do him a favor and choose to do this crap during the nightshift, when he didn't have to dodge the staff and he actually had the pistol on him. He couldn't do much besides snap at her, or leave. He wasn't about to back down and get run out just yet.

And when the hell did she care about Goku? Sanzo hadn't missed his absence either. Then again, considering how last night went down, the kid would be avoiding him. Or sulking.

"That's already taken care of."

Callisto attempted to cut her food up with her silverware as she saw a few others doing. It was a half-assed effort, really. She didn't actually give a damn about manners. "Too late!" she said with a grin. "I'm already comfortable. Guess you're stuck with me."

One of the prongs snapped off her plastic fork and she tossed it aside. The comment about Goku made her tilt her head to one side in honest curiosity. "Oh, really? That's good to hear." Another smile. "Why don't you come with me tonight, then? Unless... you had some other company in mind?" It might have seemed like a sudden change in topic, but Callisto didn't think so.

Sanzo watched her carelessly toss the prong off. He wasn't nearly that obsessed with manners, but was it that much to ask for her to not act like this was a zoo? And why did he always seem attract these types? The monk was starting to get the firm belief that this had to be that hag's doing. He had the shittiest luck imaginable. It was at the point that it was almost inhuman how much trouble followed after him.

At her sudden question, Sanzo lifted an eyebrow. Was this some kind of joke?

"I hope you're not serious." he said. Serious or not, the idea was insane. She'd stab him in the back if she could gain something from it. "Why would I want to have to deal with you more than I have to?"

"Always with the insults, and here I am openly offering to work with you. Certainly you didn't plan on visiting our little hidden area alone?" Callisto smirked, managing to cut up a few bites without making a complete mess of things. "Or did you plan to hook up with our Jedi friends again? I'm sure that wouldn't be awkward."

He knew he wasn't going to want anything to do with her, and frankly she figured she'd be just as well off on her own. Still, they were going to end up heading the same way, weren't they? He couldn't really pass up something he'd died to gain access to.

"I wasn't going to 'hook up' with anyone. What makes you think I'd want your help?" Sanzo asked. She was right on one account, running into either Jedi would be awkward. But even so, they were far less aggravating than Callisto. He was hard pressed to find of a reason to want her to come along, aside from the fact that she'd already shown her true colors.

At least when he was by himself, he wouldn't have to worry about that.

Callisto gave a little shrug, popping a piece of sausage into her mouth. "Oh, you know. Safety in numbers. Landel doesn't exactly like to make things easy for us." Not to mention that there might be other doors that required more than one person to open. It wouldn't be any fun if they got in only to be stopped at the next passageway.

"It would be wiser not to go all on your lonesome, wouldn't it? Not that I'm not confident in your fighting abilities." He hadn't put on a bad show in the arena, after all.

"It'd be a hell of a lot wiser than having to watch out for you," Sanzo pointed out. He had to at least give her that: if anything, the broad was tenacious. There was safety in numbers, if you needed a meat shield. Sanzo didn't intend to let her have that.

Even if she wasn't a manipulative bitch, Sanzo still worked better alone. If what Goku had reported back on was right, they already had the "keys" individually.

Leaning back in her chair, Callisto gave the man in front of her a slow, sly grin. She chuckled. "That's right. I'm the backstabber, aren't I? Can't be trusted as far as I can be thrown."

The former warlord shrugged, rolling a lone grape around on her plate with one finger. It was easy enough to see why he'd be difficult, and she'd had a pretty good idea he wouldn't want to come with her from the start. Still, that didn't mean she couldn't try.

"But I've little to gain from turning on you at this point. What with our common goals."
