Day 38: Intercom, Dawn

Jan 05, 2009 22:29

In the space of a heartbeat, it was early morning, with the events of the previous night seeming like a dream to the less experienced.

The sharp noise of the intercom coming to life would draw most patients out of their sleep, and the female voice that was becoming more and more familiar was there to greet them.

"The explanation is always the same, but please excuse Dr. Landel's absence. I'm not positive when he'll be back, but he has given me all the information for the day's announcements. So without further ado, your breakfast this morning will consist of pigs in blankets, along with the usual side dishes of scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage. There is also assorted fruit, cereal, and juices and water for beverages."

The explanation was far more to the point than Landels', and that also made the announcement much shorter. The woman didn't pad the wake-up call with any trivial statements.

"Enjoy your meal. Further announcements will be forthcoming."

And that was that. The intercom shut down and the nurses went into the blocks to collect the patients.
