Night 37: Janitor's Closet

Dec 09, 2008 16:23

[from here]Once inside, she clicked on her flashlight again, quickly grabbing the bucket that stood by the mops and broom, and placing the two flashlights that were in the closet inside. Once that was done, she peered around again, looking for anything useful ( Read more... )

Akihiko pushed his shoulder against the door, and was surprised when it opened easily - someone had been here before. He caught his balance quickly, then took a look around. Fortunately, whoever had come there first had still left a number of metal pipes and the like inside.

He looked behind him, making sure Mitsuru was with him, then motioned to her to come inside.

Mitsuru followed as quickly as possible, trying to avoid being seen by the group fighting outside. It wouldn't do to get caught up into their fight when they had someone else to rescue, as much as she would like to help them.

This janitor's closet was thankfully a bit cleaner than the one back at Gekkoukan, and it didn't take her long to spot the pipes that Amada had mentioned. It took her even less time to reach out and grab one of the longer ones. The pipe apparently had a bend in the metal near the bottom, with the way she was holding it. How appropriate. It would do for now.

"Okay, let's go," she said, looking back up at Akihiko.

Anise had only taken a couple steps inside the dark, cluttered room when she felt her foot hit something. It was thanks to an unseen shelf - or counter, or something - that was somewhere within reach that the girl was able to steady herself without tripping and falling right over. The room smelled dank and musty, and Anise quickly decided it probably wasn't a good idea to touch anything else that she couldn't see. Slowly, being careful not to bump into anything else unexpectedly, Anise edged over to the side of the doorway to allow Xelloss to enter.

Xelloss followed her in, not commenting on the bump. It was apparently just a stumble in the dark and not the start of an attack, so he used the flashlight to examine the room's contents. Even looking around casually, he could tell that it had been picked over. There were a few small pipes left, but when he looked to where he'd found the flashlight a few nights earlier, the spot was empty.

"I think that the flashlights are gone, but there's metal. Do you see anything else useful?" He helpfully pointed the light at various corners and shelves, to be sure to catch it all. "There seems to be a room behind this one as well. We could try breaking into there, if you don't think there's enough metal here." Probably not, but he wouldn't know; whatever kind of ability was being used to make weapons here, it was different from alchemy at home.

With the room illuminated, Anise realized the ledge she had grabbed for support was, in fact, the edge of a big grimy sink. Ew. Even if it hadn't felt that gross to the touch, she wiped her fingertips on the side of her pants, suddenly feeling unclean from having touched it.

She groaned when Xelloss announced that the flashlights were missing. That was one of her biggest reasons for even trying this room! At least there were pipes lying around, though. Now they could just snatch them up without all the hassle of prying them out from under sinks. Easy!

"Ah."

Something occurred to her then. "We didn't bring anything to carry this stuff with." Anise had been so preoccupied with worrying over Ion that she had completely forgotten to bring a pillowcase. Maybe there was something they could use in this room? Or maybe in the room connected to here...

"It's a closet of tools. Maybe something here is..." Xelloss stopped helping Anise with his light for the moment, instead going up closer to the shelves to look himself. Eventually he stopped, and called back over his shoulder, oddly illuminated by the flashlight, "How do trash bags sound?"

Leaning the shovel against a shelf to pull a garbage bag free, it took him a moment to figure out how to open it. It didn't seem particularly sturdy, compared to a cloth bag, but it was probably better than carrying everything by hand. Holding the bag out towards Anise, he shone the flashlight at it. "Let's put what we find in here for now. Then, if we find something better, we can always just move it!"

Matsuda guessed Reno was another one of their coworkers, or at least someone they'd been working with since arriving here.

He took the bag and held it open for Rude, sticking close to Elena and trying not to bump into any of the shelves. No sense causing them to fall over on top of them, if he could help it. The detective took a curious look at what was getting tossed into the bag. It was...all sorts of stuff, really. Did the guy just plan on clearing the entire place out?

Well, let Rude do what he wanted. It was his call what went in and what stayed, after all. Matsuda was just around to help. "You gonna be okay with that?" he asked Elena, nodding toward the knife in her hands.

Huh. This room seemed useful enough. Not quite as useful as the chemical equipment place, but in this place, any supplies were better than none she supposed. Although Elena wasn't entirely sure what Rude had in mind to do with the stuff, she wasn't quite willing to ask.

And, well. Actually she was a bit distracted by the fact that Matsuda was rather close to her. She wondered how far she could get with the whole flirting thing.

"Oh, this?" she glanced down at the blade she was holding. "It'll do, I guess. I wish it was a gun though." She paused, giving him a slightly flirtatious smile. "I'm pretty good with my hands, you know. At least when it comes to stuff like this."

There, see if she cared about Reno now. The jerk. Not that he was even here to see her like this, but she was hoping that Rude would help pass the message along tomorrow.

Xelloss paused in the room one last time, shining the flashlight around to check the shelves. "I think it's been emptied out a bit more since we passed through. People certainly do find uses for the oddest things, don't they? It's too bad there wasn't a flashlight! Maybe tomorrow night you can get one."

If patients had passed by here yet again, how many had gone through the other rooms in this corridor? They might have found all the metal they would find for the evening... even though Xelloss found the idea of Anise trying to maneuver the wheeled cart on the staircase in the dark amusing, risking losing the materials they had found wasn't too bright if he didn't want to be considered absolutely bad luck for the little Club. "Do you want to continue searching, or start to head back? Since we aren't sure about the cart."

Anise sighed. How did she get stuck with pushing that big old cart around? She was going to have to think of a way to get Xelloss to take it from her before they got to the stairs. If they made a stop on the way, she could probably get him to switch with her then ( ... )

"It is rather close by to just skip past," Xelloss admitted. "We can just look around for a moment." If Anise found something better than the cart, well, there was something to be said for efficiency too ( ... )
