Yuffie had been sulking for a few minutes before she actually heard the sound that made her lift her head.
"What the heck is that?" she pondered out loud as she climbed to her feet, slinging the pillow case over her shoulder once more. She wasn't really frightened so much as curious. After all, she hadn't met anything remotely scary yet in these halls. Reno so didn't count.
Moving out into view of the hallway, she peered down through the darkness, trying to see who or what it was that was making that noise.
Pyramid Head continued to lumber down the hall, his right hand clutching a sword so huge and heavy it seemed almost impossible for him to life it. His helmet was pointed straight ahead, illuminated by whatever dying light the hallways provided.
When Yuffie came into the hallway, he didn't stop.
Yuffie could only stare for a moment, too stunned to move. It was impossible. It had to be... It was far too big, like the sword it carried, and just...That thing just simply could not be heading down the hallway at her. Because that would mean that Rufus was right. And she didn't want to admit that.
Quite a bit more frightened now, Yuffie took a shaky step back before quickly stepping out of the way of the thing that was heading for her.
He came to the end of the hallway and stopped, his helmet never having moved once to register Yuffie's movements. The sword was still clutched tightly in his right hand, the arm shaking as if the effort of dragging the sword was too much - too much - for it to handle.
Then he turned the helmet, slowly, carefully, the pointed end looking directly at Yuffie.
And his left hand whipped out, grabbing her by the throat.
For a few moments, Yuffie thought that the thing might not have noticed her. How could it even see where the heck it was going with that huge thing on its head? It was pretty much impossible, right? Maybe if she just kept quiet, it wouldn't even know she was there...
Yuffie would have screamed if there'd been enough time to see the hand lash out at her.
Realizing how strong the grip around her throat was, she brought up her hands to grab the thing's wrist. At the same time, she swung up her legs, trying frantically to kick at the arm.
His hand wrapped tightly around her neck, Pyramid Head pulled the girl up off the ground and close to the edge of his helmet. It was almost as if he was studying her; had he wanted to attack her, wouldn't he have turned his sword on her, or slammed her head into the wall?
No. He simply held her there.
Out of the right-side slit in his helmet, a thin, long, black tongue-like thing came out, slithering around the harsh metal edges of the helmet and flickering in Yuffie's direction, much like a snake would smell the air.
Then it came closer, almost brushing across her skin before retracting back and pausing.
Yuffie continued flailing frantically as the thing held her up. She didn't seem to care what the heck it was doing. It was hurting her with its grip and she wanted it to let go.
She stopped flailing for only a moment as the black thing slithered out at her, paling slightly. Oh, she was going to be sick later... Very very sick. And she was going to scrub herself for at least 15 minutes once she got the chance. If she got the chance.
As the creature drew back its tongue thing and paused, Yuffie took the chance to let go with one hand and grab a pen from her headband. With a desperate amount of force, she stabbed the pan down at the arm that was holding her up.
The pen hit the skin and tore it, sliding just a little before the force dug into the flesh and muscles below. Pyramid Head's entire arm jerked, the tongue-like appendage snapping back into the helmet as if recoiling from the pain. His hand stiffened, fingers jerking away from her neck and loosening the grip in turn.
No sound came out from under the mask. Only the faintest noises even came from him: squeaks of the metal helmet, crumpling from his apron, shifting as the feet thumped against the floor. There was something fundamentally wrong with that.
Yuffie felt the pen hit skin and embed itself into the thing's arm, but there wasn't the satisfying scream that she'd been hoping for. Something normal would have at least cried or or hissed in pain or something, right?...
Still, as soon as she felt the fingers loosen even a little bit, she squirmed with all her might, finally pulling herself out of the thing's grasp and falling to the floor.
She landed on hard on her behind, gasping painfully for breath. She was quite sure there were going to be some nasty bruises, but at the moment, she didn't really care. Grabbing the pillowcase she'd been carrying before she was grabbed, she scrambled to her feet and ran as fast as she could away from that thing, taking cover down the closest hallway.
Yuffie squirmed out of the loosened grip and ran, leaving Pyramid Head to grope around in the air for his lost prey. He seemed to realize that she was gone after a few moments, but didn't turn to follow her; maybe she was too fast, or he wasn't interesting, or some other reason.
Instead, he simply let his arm drop and continued moving towards the stairs.

The sounds came from around the corner, halfway down the hallway, quickly becoming louder and echoing in the stark hallways.
