Nightshift 36: Sun Room

[From here.]The Sun Room appeared no different from the time Ken entered in last night. What he could make of the floor seemed perfectly intact while sounds inside were nothing of consequence. Nothing mangled, nothing broken, at least as far as the boy could sense ( Read more... )

[from here]

The Sun Room was still as quiet as it had been before, fortunately, and Yue moved as quickly as he could to the nearest couch to deposit Subaru there. No matter how cold or abrupt his demeanor, he was still quite careful with his burden, setting the other down as gently as possible in order to avoid jarring the wound further.

Once that was done, the guardian knelt on the floor to examine the deep gashes on Subaru's leg, frowning in apparent annoyance at them and completely ignoring his own injuries.

"Uwaaah... Yue-san! What are you doing, you're hurt!" Subaru was not thinking about the times Seishirou had carried him around just like this, he truly wasn't. Really. It was just a shock, and he was worried for Yue-san. Fortunately, Yue-san put Subaru down relatively quickly, and Subaru sighed in relief. He also turned red as a strawberry and hid his face in embarrassment. "Yue-san, that was unnecessary."

"You shouldn't be walking on that," was the guardian's only reply; he'd clearly felt that it was necessary, and wasn't about to allow for argument on that point. Besides, it was already done, so there was no point in protesting now.

Yue's frown deepened momentarily as he considered his options, emotions warring within him. He hadn't wanted anyone along with him in the first place, but once he'd failed to prevent Subaru from following he'd tacitly accepted him as a companion and thus, under his protection. It was a duty that drew him unwillingly from his desire for oblivion and forced him to focus on the present necessity.

He breathed out a quiet, resigned sigh, then pulled off his shirt and began to tear it into strips with his teeth. It wasn't as though he had anything else for bandages at the moment, and something had to be done about Subaru's leg.

Well, Subaru couldn't really walk on his bad leg at this point, probably, as casting that second spell had cost him dearly in energy; he wasn't at the point of passing out, but certainly he would have needed something to lean on in order to walk. Still, being carried around like some sort of girl was just too much! But Yue-san was right about one thing--what was done was done. Subaru sighed and shook his head. "You're hurt, too, Yue-san. Please have some care for yourself."

Yue shook his head slightly, using the strips of fabric to carefully bind the slashes on Subaru's leg. "It's not important," he replied curtly, apparently irritated at the suggestion or the situation or all of the above. He could still walk, he wouldn't bleed to death, and to be honest, he wasn't all that interested in taking care of himself to begin with.

Yukito rather disagreed with that sentiment, though, and it was starting to become harder to ignore him. When he was hearing concern from both inside and out, it made him only more annoyed, which translated to the viewer as him becoming even more stiff and cold.

"It's important to me." Was this what Hokuto felt like sometimes, trying to talk him into taking better care of himself? It was really frustrating! Well, as soon as he recovered a little from his dizziness, Subaru would insist on taking care of Yue-san's own injury.

Important to him? Yue paused for just a moment in his work, then huffed quietly and tied off the makeshift bandages before letting go of the other's leg as quickly as though it had burned him.

Clearly, it was time for him to leave now, before any other claims on his time and attention could arise. And yet, even as he stood and started to turn away he froze, finding that Yukito had again decided to interfere. He's right, you know, his other self murmured, stubbornly refusing to give in. You need to take care of yourself, too.

And Yue-san was staring off into the distance again, like there was something he could see that no one else could. Once again, Subaru felt oddly like he was finally getting to see how other people perceived him, since he had no doubt done quite a lot of staring at and talking to invisible things, back home. "Yue-san...?"

After a moment's silent struggle between the two occupying the same body, Yue finally realized that he was simply weary of the whole thing. It just wasn't worth it anymore. None of it was. The guardian abruptly pulled away as far as he could into a corner of their shared mind, curling in on himself and trying to shut himself away from it all. If he couldn't find a more permanent solution at the moment, perhaps he could at least sleep for now and try to forget.

This, however, left Yukito behind - briefly startled and more than a little disoriented by the sudden abandonment, he wobbled for a moment as he attempted to find his balance. And then the pain from their injured leg finally hit, and he hissed quietly as he glanced down at the claw marks. "...ow."

"Yue-san!" Subaru sat up hurriedly and leaned forward, not trusting his leg to take his weight if he stood, but wanting to try to steady Yue-san if he could. "Please, sit down."

"Oh, no, Sumeragi-san, don't...I'm all right." Yukito turned back quickly, giving the other a worried look. It was just a momentary dizzy spell, he was fine - just a little startled. Really. "Please don't try to get up."

He did, however, carefully move over to take a seat on the couch. Yue might have been determined to ignore the fact that he was bleeding, but it was a little more difficult for Yukito to do so.

Now it was Subaru's turn to pull off his shirt and start tearing it into bandages. The sharp change in Yue-san's behaviour, though, reminded Subaru of that rather significant mystery that surrounded him. Last time they had fought together--however ineffectively--Yue-san had physically changed after he passed out. This time the change was only in mannerisms, but it was so major that Subaru asked tentatively, "... Tsukishiro-san?"

"Ah. Well...yes." Yukito paused momentarily in the middle of lowering himself to a seat on the couch, then offered a somewhat uncertain smile as he finished the motion. "At the moment."

It wasn't a subject that he was really interested in dwelling on right now, though. He leaned over and pulled away the ripped portion of the leg of his pants, examining the lacerations on his calf with a mild wince. "It's not too bad, really. It could certainly have been worse."

"Sorry. I'm sure it's a delicate subject. But I happened to see the change, the other night." Even as he apologised, Subaru finished tearing up his shirt and shifted positions so that he could get a better look at Tsukishiro-san's leg. "Let me see."

Yukito sighed quietly but didn't seem nearly as inclined to argue as his other self - he instead just shifted a little, allowing Subaru to see the claw gouges running down his calf. Though they were long, they weren't too deep, although all the recent movement had left them sluggishly oozing blood.

"I apologize on his behalf," he offered, a little hesitantly. "Yue-san and I...have had a bad couple of days." That was putting it somewhat mildly; having your entire existence thrown into question again and simultaneously having to cope with someone in your head who had been comfortably separate would have been bad enough on their own. Together? Well.

Subaru bound the cuts quickly, pleased when the blood stopped seeping through almost immediately--a little pressure had done the trick. "There's nothing to apologise for, Tsukishiro-san. Quite to the contrary, I appreciate Yue-san's help tonight, even when he was in such difficulty himself." Subaru even smiled, just a little, "Though obviously I'd have preferred if he'd been a little more cautious, but it worked out in the end."
