Nightshift 35: Main Hallway, 2-Centre

Sep 25, 2008 00:05

[from here]Siegfried led the way along the main hallway and past the balcony looking down on the Sun Room, constantly on the lookout for anything that might sneak up on the two. He expected that they would hear something before they were attacked, but that may not always be the case. It was better to be safe than sorry ( Read more... )

Xelloss nodded again, barely visible in the dimmed light. The shovel was still ready in his hands, and the illumination from the Sun Room's high windows helped him see their path a bit more clearly, but there was still the possibility of being attacked by surprise. Something invisible, or even simply around a corner they hadn't passed yet...

For now, at least, they were making steady progress.

Sousuke took Miku's hand and moved quickly across the hallway, sword held loosely at his side. They were going to make it to that damned room if he had anything to say about it.

Miku gripped his hand and hoped that his wounds weren't hurting him. Shouldn't they have been hurting? They looked like they hurt. She kept her eyes on the ground and listened for the scratching of monsters, the thudding, inelegant steps of the nurses.

"So quiet..."

Sousuke nodded, "It should stay that way. We'll be able to hear something before it attacks us."

He quickened his pace a little--they were so close, and he didn't want them to trip at the finish line.

Not bothering to wait for the boy to answer her question, Elle turned her attention to the Sun Room. There seemed to be some fighting going on down there, but it was too dark to make out details.

Partially out of boredom, partially just because she could, she shot a few arcs of electricity at the railing that theoretically prevented really stupid people from falling to their death - or more likely, grievous injury - on the Sun Room floor below. The blue arcs danced along the conductive surface, lighting the whole area up. Elle kept the electricity going, not wanting the light show to disappear quite yet. Maybe someone would think it was pretty and touch it. Not that it would hurt them much, she though bitterly.

Shito completely ignored the question, like he hadn't heard it. Since the girl had ignored his request to look at the map, he didn't even feel a little bit bad about ignoring her question about his hand. Not that he would have answered even the nicest, sweetest person in the world, probably. Explaining the whole situation with his and Akatsuki's hands getting switched would mean admitting he was a zombie, and that just wasn't going to happen.

"You're seriously wasting energy, you know. Doesn't this place weaken powers?" Shito was pretty sure that had been mentioned in the new-patient primer thing on the message board.

"I haven't found a limit yet," Elle lied easily. It was true she hadn't found a limit to low-amperage electricity. As long as she didn't try to generate too many amps, she was pretty sure she could keep this going as long as she needed to.

"Have your powers been weakened?" she asked casually. No harm in expanding her list, even if this turned out to be her last night here. Considering how obnoxious everyone here was, she wouldn't mind handing that list to Sylar and giving him her blessing to go psycho serial killer on everyone. Though she'd be sure to cross Eddie's name off first, if she did that. And maybe Peter's too - not that Sylar didn't already know Peter was here. But she wouldn't want to encourage him.

Was she really deciding to forgive Peter for what he'd done to her? He'd betrayed her, he'd disappointed her. He'd made her think he really cared about her, when clearly all he cared about was using her to escape. But at the same time... he was Peter.

Shito somehow doubted that this girl really didn't have a limit to her powers, not just because of whatever this place did but just because it was his experience that power had to come from somewhere, and when you used up the source that was it, until whatever it was restored itself. But her powers were obviously pretty different from the ability to manipulate astral, so Shito wasn't even really lying when he said, "I don't have powers."

... Actually, he wasn't lying at all, unless Akatsuki showed up at some point.

A bit closer to the goal, however, and the carnage became evident. From below there were screams of pain, and Near could only hope Brooklyn didn't pick that moment to forget that he didn't have wings with which he could fly down and assist those in seemingly greater need. Also present were a pair of people, neither of whom looked significantly older than Near. The teen easily ignored all of it, seeing no apparent danger, but the closed door that marked their goal.

"It's there." Near shined the light on the door for a moment, but didn't advance more than few slow steps. He had to know what Brooklyn would do first, and more importantly, if the man would need to be convinced that moving along with Near was still the best course of action.

Brooklyn was, in fact, very torn. He couldn't help stopping to lean over the rail (oddly warm for some reason) and peering over the edge at the fights going on below.

If he'd thought he'd seen monsters here before, they were nothing compared to what he saw now. There was two of them, and very young patients under attack by them. If he hadn't been with Near, he was quite certain he would have lept from the rail at this point - lack of wings and strength be damned. He was growling before he knew it, eyes briefly lighting white. Then he stopped, glancing back to Near and then to the sun room again.

It was an effort to pull himself away, but he did. He tried to put the sounds of screaming out of his head as he tested the knob on the door. Locked. Not surprising. Using some of the anger built up over his current situation, the gargoyle threw himself into the door with a satisfying crack.

Roy became more cautious when he saw that there were two other groups of patients who were searching this area. When everyone clumped together like this, it meant there was a larger chance of monsters getting attracted. So he kept silent for the moment, knowing that Hughes would come to a similar conclusion and act accordingly.

Of course, some of the others seemed to think that they could carry on conversations without a problem, but Roy knew they weren't his responsibility.

He moved down the center hallway, wanting to get to the other side of the chapel to try out the doors there. He was fairly certain he had tried a few of them already, but it was best to be completely sure.

Hughes just cast Roy a look and shrugged. He had come to the same conclusion, and all he could do was stay on high alert. He nodded to his friend, a silent signal to let him know he was prepared.

Roy watched as a pair of younger patients moved past them and broke into one of the doors up ahead. Well, that narrowed it down for them at least slightly, but there were a few other doors that still need to be tried in this area.

He moved to the end of the railed area and then turned left, trying the first door there and finding that it was locked, but loosely. It could have been broken into just as easily as the door next to it that the others had just entered, which meant that they didn't need to waste any more time on it.

Roy continued north, past the broken door and onto the next one.

Hughes just followed along behind, keeping an eye out. He thought he could hear sounds of fighting going on in other halls, but that was pretty much routine for this place.

He just hoped this actually resulted in something. He knew Roy had to be feeling pretty defeated, and any progress was something to celebrate in the institute. Hopefully they'd have something to celebrate before the end of the night.
