Left led outside, further down the hall at least. Callisto reminded herself absently of this as she went the opposite direction. In the future she might see what all the fuss was about, but not now. The announcements only made her current target all the more interesting.

As he turned down the next hall he came to, Matsuda was kind of underwhelmed to find it was another hall that seemed to be near patient blocks. He couldn't really help it much, he supposed, but at least he had found out something. It was probably something that Light and L would have already known, but he would probably need to figure out this place's layout on his own, just to make sure he'd remember where everything was. A map would be nice...
He did, however, notice a lady in the hall who seemed to be having trouble with her flashlight. Matsuda found himself drawing closer, and was kinda shocked to see just how she was dressed. She looked...well, kinda like a prostitute, but he had to admit she looked really good like that! Even if she did look even more like she didn't belong in this place, but she seemed to have an idea of what she was doing.
It was better than him, at any rate.
"Ah, hi..." Matsuda said quietly as he approached her, kinda glad that it was dark. He could feel the heat spreading over his face, and was sure he would have been bright red if it was daytime. But if she was having trouble, he couldn't really leave her to be monster bait! That just wasn't right. "Is something wrong with your flashlight?"

"Batteries are dying," she said, shaking it until the feeble beam steadied some. "Guess I'm lucky they lasted this long." She shrugged. "I'll have to see if I can find some more, that's all." At least she wasn't going terribly far.
"Are you out here by yourself?"
Reply
"Hm? Yeah, I am." Matsuda rubbed at the back of his head, looking down and trying not to make it obvious that he was staring. "I was told not to be, but I figure I need to get something done. Gotta help out around here somehow!" Then again, he didn't really have much of a clue what would classify as monsters, what to look out for that might be good, or a weapon. Most people would call that stupid before they called it help.
"What about you? Are you out here by yourself, too, or were you going to meet someone?"

She didn't want to leave him alone out here. He didn't have a weapon, and she had no idea if he could fight without one. And she didn't have anyone to pawn him off onto like she usually did.
"I have to drop a few things off with a...friend of mine. It's not far, and I can handle the monsters by myself."
And she couldn't exactly just bring a stranger with her to Ryuzaki's room. Maybe if he waited outside....?
"You really shouldn't be by yourself," she chastised, lightly. Obviously he was new so she couldn't be too hard on him. "This place is dangerous at night. Look, why don't you come with me? I won't be long at my friend's, I just need to give him something I picked up last night."

Still, if the lady could handle monsters by herself, then so could he! He was a police officer, so he'd had some combat training...with guns, which he didn't have. Okay, so maybe going with someone else was a better idea than hoping he could make a run for it.
"Are you sure? I...won't be in the way, or anything?" he asked, tilting his head slightly, but smiling all the same. Really, he was happy that she had suggested it and hadn't just left him. When was the last time he'd been able to walk around with a woman like her? It was really bugging him that he couldn't remember where he'd seen her before, though, because he didn't think he'd forget meeting someone like her in person. Maybe a picture, then? That didn't narrow it down very much, since they went through dozens of pictures in a day at police headquarters. Maybe if he got her name, then that would ring a bell, instead.
"Oh! I'm Matsuda, by the way. Matsuda Touta."

"being extra-careful doesn't matter much here," she went on. "A lot of people go into shock just seeing the monsters that come out at night. But just stick close and you'll be fine." She knew how to be a bodyguard, at least.
"It's nice to you meet you, Matsuda. I'm Maki." She held out her hand, to be polite. "You're Japanese, aren't you?" At least they had that in common. And he didn't seem like the typical arrogant, sexist male she couldn't stand.

"It's nice to meet you, too, Maki." He took her hand and gave it a firm shake. The name still didn't ring any bells, unfortunately. At this rate, it would be a mystery forever...or at least until he just asked. "Yeah, I'm Japanese. What about you? You look...kinda familiar."

"I was born in Japan," she admitted. "But I moved to America when I was eighteen. Never went back. I lived in Boston for a while until I moved to California." She started walking, heading down the hall to the men's dorms.

"Oh, really? Los Angeles is really the only place that I've been in America, and that was just on business." He let himself trail off, thinking back on just what that business had involved. Then he realized that he was falling behind and quickened his pace, reminding himself that night was dangerous. He could worry about having to tell Light about his dad during the day. "What's Boston like?"

Well, Naomi still wasn't sure what that was. It was hard to tell. She kept talking as she walked, enjoying the rather normal conversation.
