Nightshift 35: F21-F30 Hallway

Sep 20, 2008 16:19

Okay, so the day more or less completely sucked. The only consolation Toph had was in regards to the conversation with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan and the upcoming meeting with Renamon for her file and possessions. That is, if she could even find the woman. Renamon never got a chance to tell her the location of her room; the staff had intervened too ( Read more... )

Naminé had just barely missed seeing Alita exit from a nearby room, doing a double-take as she saw the familiar figure stalk down the hallway to a room that was further down.

"Alita!" Naminé called out as soon she was close enough, jogging up to her friend and stopping short as soon as she spotted Alita's hand on the doorknob. Had she interrupted something?

"Oh, I'm sorry, is this a bad time?"

Falis almost jumped as Namine's voice called out to her. She froze where she was with the doorknob half-turned and, for the briefest of moments, she looked like a kid that had been caught doing something wrong. Namine probably wasn't going to appreciate the bounty hunter's attempt to sneak into someone else's room to poke through their private stuff.

"Uh... kinda," Falis replied, as her eyes moved from the door to Namine.

To tell the truth, Naminé would have left Alita go if her friend didn't jump like she looked like she got caught doing something she really shouldn't have been doing. While she knew it wasn't her business to pry...

"Um, are you meeting someone? I was just wondering if you were free for the night, but I suppose..." Perhaps she really was just meeting someone, but since Naminé was intending to ask for an escort, she decided to just get that out of the way.

Shit. How the hell was she going to answer that?

"...no. I don't have any plans with anyone," she answered, her responses being much more brief than normal. Her eyes darted to the door, then back to Namine and she eased the doorknob back and let go of it.

"I was... working."

Oh? While Naminé was happy to hear that... she couldn't help that she did interrupt something, and it must have been something serious if Alita wasn't really willing to tell her.

"... I can wait. I mean, I just wanted to know if you wanted to go to the Arts and Crafts room with me tonight," She explained, casting a suspicious glance at the door.

It was none of her business, but Naminé would be lying if she said she wasn't curious.

"Oh. I can do that after I..." Damnit. Now it felt all wrong and shit sneaking into the room with Namine out here. She was sure it showed on her face and she looked away.

"Do you mind if I..." Damnit. "I've got to... look around in here for... stuff."

Naminé hadn't known Alita for very long, but she could say with a degree of certainty that it was very unusual for Alita to act so flustered over a simple task. The logical conclusion was that whatever reason Alita was here, the people in the room didn't know about it.

And she couldn't help but look slightly alarmed when Alita mentioned that she had to take a "look" in another's patient's room, seemingly without permission.

"Does this person... know you're going to do that?" Naminé didn't want to be suspicious of her friend without proof, but she couldn't quite agree with this either. If only Alita wasn't acting so... sneaky!

Falis did not answer as she turned back toward the door, listening intently tow hat might be on the other side of the door. Her non-answer was as good as one anyways and she pursed her lips and glanced around the hall to see who else might be watching.

Her non-answer was indeed good enough, and Naminé started to look around nervously. While she knew that she had no right to interfere with Alita's affairs...

"Surely you can just ask them? Does this have to be done behind their back?" Naminé had heard of patients being attacked in their own rooms, and while Alita didn't seem like she was doing that, she still was uncomfortable with the idea of a stranger going through her room.

Alita wasn't trying to... steal anything, was she? It didn't seem like something she would do.

Damn this was awkward. Falis wasn't used to having to explain herself nor did she usually care to. Why did Namine have to choose now to come look for her.

"No. I can't." Falis replied quietly. "My activities are not to be detected by them."

"... Oh."

In the end though, Naminé really couldn't say anything. She had invaded someone else's privacy in the worst way and was already contemplating doing it again (with permission, but still), so she really would be a hypocrite to try and stop Alita.

"I'm sure you have your reasons. I'll be waiting out here until you're done, if you'd still like to come with me," Naminé did sound very disappointed, but she tried not to let it sound too obvious. She didn't mean to start guilt-tripping Alita out of doing this, but that seemed to be her ulterior motive as she turned away from the princess to act as a sort of "lookout".

Now that just wasn't fair. Now Falis couldn't continue on and riffle through Yukari's room. Now it seemed so wrong and she couldn't get Namine involved in her contract and...

"..."

Damnit.

The princess cast the door a look before coming up to stand next to Namine. She gazed down the hallway, one hand on the sword at her waist, for a long moment of silence. She then looked down at Namine.

"Well, go on. Don't you want to get there before some beasties get in the way?"

"Huh?"

A blush spread across Naminé's cheeks as she noticed Alita standing over her, realizing that she had actually managed to convince Alita not to rifle through the room for now. She was torn between feeling happy that she potentially saved Alita from trouble and guilty over making her feel bad for doing her job.

But she wasn't going to waste Alita's time, if the princess had made her decision, and Naminé nodded and started to walk towards the end of the hall.
