The intercom came on differently this time--with a loud and pleasant "ding" rather than the usual click. It sounded as if the Head Doctor had had his PA system improved.
"I'm sorry to interrupt your quiet time in the library, but it seems it's already time for lunch. Today, we will be serving food of a different sort--pan-fried noodles to which you may choose to add a variety of vegetables, and to which you may also choose to add beef, pork, or chicken. As side dishes, you may choose steamed rice, fried rice, or a salad. To drink, we currently have water, milk, and assorted juices."
The voice paused for a second before adding:
"Oh--and of course, don't forget to also pick up a fortune cookie! Sometimes, you'd be surprised at how accurate they can be..."
Although the man's tone could have been called decidedly ominous, especially for his daytime facade, the Head Doctor slipped back into his warm tone quite easily.
"I believe that's all for now. I hope you all enjoy lunch!"
Another "ding" signaled the end of the announcement.
