Day 35: Main Street

Shiki was a little disappointed. When she heard the words 'field trip', she had expected the town to be a whole lot bigger. How could you even go shopping properly in a town like this? There needed to be a whole lot more stores, she decided. Two department stores, boutiques, and a record store, at least ( Read more... )

"And as your friend, I want you to have fun as well. You can't fool me. There's no need to sacrifice your feelings when you're with your friends, especially for my sake. If you continue like this then you'll only be sad in the end," Archer said, before turning solemn. "Believe me, I know."

She'd have to do a lot better than that if she wanted to fool him. Archer had spent his whole life doing it. Whether or not he wasted it was debatable. Although him being an idiot was indisputable, sacrificing his happiness for the sake of others. But did he have regrets? Did he make a mistake? Perhaps, but he wouldn't change anything.

Standing up, he slowly walked towards the spa's entrance, their hands still intertwined. "I won't ask you to be overjoyed, but at the very least don't force yourself to be happy. That will make me sad. Just be yourself, and I'll be satisfied with that."

"For now," he said, giving her a slightly teasing smirk. He didn't want to bother her by feeling pushy. There was plenty of time to make her smile later. He wasn't going to die anytime soon, and neither was Hanyuu. Archer wouldn't let that happen.

Perhaps clinging to Archer had been a mistake. It wasn't that Hanyuu didn't like him, quite the opposite, it was just... he seemed more perceptive than most people she spoke to. Convincing him that everything was fine was definitely going to be difficult. Hopefully the trip to the spa would give her some time to clear her mind and figure things out.

"You're right... I'm sorry," she said with a nod, despite the fact that she had no intention of being herself. After all, if she were to be herself, she'd merely ask what the point of all this was. Was there really a reason to continue struggling in this world when it was already perfectly clear that Fate had won? All the fighting, all the suffering, and all the false hope they received; was it all really worth it?

Questions like that brought moods down quickly, so it was for the best that she be anything but herself right now.

"I promise that I'm not forcing myself to be happy, though," she added, looking up at him again. "I just want to spend time with you and my other friends; that really is what makes me happy." As long as she tried to forget the fact that their lives were being measured in days and hours now, at least.

Archer stil wasn't convinced, but he wasn't going to push it. He didn't want to force her to come clean.
