Nightshift 34: Rec Field

[from here]This was a bit more like it. Definitely a different outside area than she'd been earlier. It looked a bit like a football field, but why a hospital would have one of those... Although, why a hospital would be staffed by cats was an equally good question, but New New York had those, didn't it ( Read more... )

Sanosuke had just started to follow after the rest when some guy appeared out of nowhere, telling them to go back inside. His good mood snapped, and somewhere in the back of his head Sano was pretty damn sure he'd heard of shit like this before. Even without being positive though, even he knew that a guy who could vanish wasn't one to be just randomly swinging a sword at.

Like Cloud was doing just then.

Sanosuke let out a sharp curse as he ran the short distance to catch up. What the hell did Cloud think he was doing? Unless there was something he wasn't telling, Sanosuke was pretty damn sure they didn't have powers like that. At least Sano knew that he and Kenshin didn't, even if they were better than most guys at what they did. The problem was that Cloud was trying to kill the guy with that blow, and that meant Kenshin was stepping in, one way or another.

So Sanosuke would do the only thing he could in that situation. Let Kenshin take care of Cloud, and hope coming at the new guy from the side with a punch would serve as enough of a distraction to keep him from taking advantage of Kenshin's open back.

With the blade coming right for him, Peter had been prepared to take the hit. It wouldn't amount to much in the end, and these patients needed to see that they didn't have much of a chance when it came to defeating him.

Instead, the red-headed patient stopped the other's attack, and Peter frowned even as he registered the way one of the others was circling around him.

"You should listen to him," he said earnestly. "Heading back the other way is the best option for you. There are all sorts of things out here that won't reason with you at all. They'll just attack, and I'm not supposed to let that happen." At the end he sounded particularly eager, though the way he said the words was off.

"I'd rather not have to resort to violence," he finished. He considered forming some nuclear energy in his hand to prove his point, but he didn't want to scare them so badly yet. It seemed that at least one of the patients realized the futility of fighting, so this could still turn around.

The situation was rapidly going from 'aww, crap' to... to something worse.

Yuffie wasn't sure whether she should be rolling her eyes or smacking her forehead against something, but she wasn't going to waste time making her mind up. She didn't know what the hell was going on with Mr. Go Inside, but she did know that trying to fight against a man who could teleport wasn't going to go in their favour, especially when they were handicapped like they were. Gawd!

But that didn't mean that they could just give up. The night was still young, and there plenty of things that they could be doing. So, what to do? She glanced around quickly, taking in the walls and the other patients in the field...

"Guys," she said, hoping that they'd get the hint. The wall wasn't all that far away, and making a break for it seemed like a better option than dicking around with swords. "Dudes, seriously. We've got better things to do. Let's just go, alright?"

Just in case, she stepped in front of Kenshin's unprotected back- the guy was fast, but he was pre-occupied. If people were smart, they could run for the wall whilst she covered them, and if not... well, she could yell at them later. Not that she wouldn't be doing that later anyways.

A shock ran up the length of his arms as his sword was intercepted, forcing his shoulders to bunch as he landed on the ground. Perhaps the greater surprise was that the red-head did not move an inch under the force of his blade. Had this institute weakened him that much?

His blue eyes shifted over to regard Kenshin, raising an eyebrow at the choice of wording. Intersting... so no killing around this one? "Very well... but I have no intention of watching an ally of mine come to harm."

He withdrew his blade from where it was crossed with Kenshin's and stepped around it as he held his blade towards Peter's chest. "Yuffie, over the wall then. I will cover all your backs." He would feel much safer letting the other three slip away and then following himself.

Between Yuffie covering Kenshin's back, and more importantly, the fact that this guy had yet to actually attack them, Sanosuke didn't throw any careless punches. Considering the guy could pop up out of nowhere, even Sano could figure out that if they were going to try and fight him, they'd have to do it together. Problem was that Yuffie and Cloud were used to each other, and Kenshin and Sano could read each other without thinking about it, but no cohesion really existed between the two pairings.

A little fact that was made very clear by what Cloud said and did next.

"Neither do any of us, Kenshin especially." Sanosuke naturally came to the defense of his friend, having seen firsthand just how far the swordsman would go to protect others. Sanosuke eyed the scene before him, not liking the picture it added up to, and grinned.

"You really think something like that will work? Guy seems pretty determined to keep us here." His grin grim, Sanosuke clearly had his doubts. The guy they were up against could probably vanish and just pop up in front of them as they tried to run. And anyway, the idea of running off and leaving someone behind didn't sit right with Sanosuke.

"Hey, you." Sanosuke tried calling to Peter, his guard not dropping as he spoke to the man. "We don't care if stuff attacks us out there. But we aren't just going back inside either. You really going to try and fight us just because of that?"

Okay, so his negotiation skills were lacking. But it wasn't Cloud or Peter Sano would take cues from; he was waiting to see what Kenshin would decide.

It wasn't like he couldn't hear the ideas they were throwing around. Peter might have made some sort of response to the brunet's attempt to argue with him if the group hadn't fallen into a flurry of action that he needed to deal with. Why couldn't they listen to reason? Peter was hardly in the mindset to realize that he wasn't listening to reason either.

In the end, the priority was to make sure that they didn't get out, and so he wasn't beyond resorting to dirty tactics, especially since he had let a few others slip through the cracks while dealing with this group of four.

So as some of them raced for what they must have considered an escape, all it took was some concentrating and a wincing of the eyes for Peter to reappear, perched on top of the wall.

Just as he was about to make another attempt to get them to head back inside, however, a burst of light from the corner of his eye caused him to look over into the courtyard. There was a group gathered there, but what had originally caught his attention was a blast of radioactivity.

Sylar.

Peter's more serious expression fell apart as his eyes widened. It didn't make sense. Sylar had died, Peter had seen it with his own two eyes - how could he be here? But this place defied all logic, and right now his mind was too warped to think very logically about it. The fact of the matter was that he knew Sylar wasn't one to hold back. He was probably trying to kill those people and take their powers in a way far messier than Peter's own ability.

Sylar had to be stopped. Peter stiffened as he was torn between his duty to stop these patients from rushing into danger and the threat the other man posed. At least two of these patients were armed, they would be all right, but his mind kept screaming at him to follow orders, to do as he had been instructed. He balled his fists as memories of that night in Odessa seeped into the forefront of his mind.

No, he knew what that man was capable of and he knew he was the only one who stood a chance against him. Peter didn't send a second glance back at the four that he had been so concerned with just seconds before. Instead, he let out a deep breath and kicked off of the wall and up into the air, intending to fly over and swoop down to interrupt the other man's "fun."

[Going to be heading here. You're off the hook, guys!]

That... was unexpected.

Yuffie blinked, watching as Teleporty Dude jumped off the wall. She'd been fully prepared and willing to fight her way past. She'd gone and gotten herself all geared up, and he just flipped 'em off and ran like a coward! Well, without the flipping off... but still! What a bummer.

Holding back on the urge to yell after him, Yuffie tossed her hair and stuck her tongue out at where Teleporty Dude had been. This was gonna make their lives a whole lot easier, though... so why screw it up and waste the opportunity?

"Whoo!" She cheered, eager to leave the tension behind. "Score one for us!"

Deciding to take the initiative- hey, Cloud had told her to go!- she set off at a run for the wall that stood between them and the outside world, without waiting for any reply to her antics. It took a quick handspring and a leap once she was close enough, and then all she had to do was swing herself the rest of the way up using the vines and the top of the wall.

Crouched at the top, she did a quick survey of the area. It didn't look too bad. "Looks clear, guys!" She called, turning back to glance at her teammates.

His eyebrows drew together when their opponent - he had been an opponent? - left suddenly. He lowered his blade and looked off towards where Peter had apparently been looking. Was that normal behaviour for a brain washed individual? It did not seem like it, but there was no point in complaining.

Cloud sheathed his sword and headed off after Yuffie towards the wall. It would be better to get out of the institute then wait for Peter to return. Never look a gift horse in the mouth, as his mother would say. They possibly had other fights coming up.

Using the vines, he climbed his way to the top and stood next to his ninja companion. It was still so foggy beyond the walls. "Looks like visibility has not improved since last night. We have better numbers, so it will be fine."

That was fucked up. By no means did Sanosuke want to fight the guy, or leave Kenshin to fight him, but something about the way he just up and left them didn't come off right. Still, Sano wasn't going to complain about it in the end.

Looking to Kenshin, he shrugged. Of course, the guy hadn't been the only thing to get Sanosuke upset, but he'd have lots of chances to talk to Cloud later. Right now they were being left again, and Sanosuke flashed a grin at his friend. "Let's go, yeah?" He took off towards the wall, starting the climb up.
