Day 33: Recreational Field

Jun 26, 2008 04:45

Guy let out a sigh of relief as he made his way out onto the field, glad to have some fresh air and sunshine after going so many days without it. That was one of the hardest things about being kept in this place, in his opinion. At least during their journey they had been outside more often than not ( Read more... )

Well, he had food in his stomach. That was one plus.

Without the medium of school and family to get him up early in the morning, he felt it was still too early for the staff to be dragging around their victims like this. Especially to be told that guys and girls were going to spend the “activity” shifts all split up. The fuck was with that? As if having absolutely nothing to do but seriously consider smashing someone’s head in with a chair wasn’t bad enough.

Everything was just set up against Reid. He didn’t like to be stuck indoors for long periods, he didn’t like inactivity, and he didn’t like being treated like a kid. Oh yeah, and he didn’t like losing his Power, being dumped in a horror house, and getting as paranoid as their fearless leader when he wondered why he hadn’t seen Tyler at breakfast.

He kicked around outside after ignoring the motherly encouragement from his nurse, the old hag handing him a soccer ball and sending him on his way. Definitely a soccer field in the light of day, and now that he could see, he could pick out the spots where he and that transsexual dude had scaled the shortest of the walls and been attacked by those bats. Had to wonder what was all on the other side, or better yet, what was on the other side of the three other walls. That was an easy one. Started with an ‘f’ and ended with him putting his foot up the ass of whoever had put them here.

Reid didn't seriously play a whole lot of sports, per say, but he had potential if he wanted to--drop-kicking the ball as hard as he could without shoes, he tried to boot it clear over the far wall. It was a good effort, considering it hit the wall only a foot too low, bouncing off with a hard whoomph and hitting the grass near a grey lump.

Tyler jerked as a soccer ball landed not far from where he was lying. Pushing himself up on his elbows, he glanced around for the source as he reached for the ball. Spotting the blond not far away, he shot Reid a wry look, his lips twisting into a crooked grin as he tossed the ball back to his best friend.

"You missed," he called as he threw the ball back.

"Would've served you right if I hadn't," came the reflexive reply. Reid caught the ball and rolled it around in his hands for something to do as he approached. Lucky or unlucky it was Tyler? He wasn't sure.

If he'd known, Reid thought he probably would've tried to hit him on purpose, which was a thought that held less carefree joking than it normally would.

Whether it was night or not, things still weren't... normal.

"Gee thanks," Tyler retorted wryly, pushing himself all the way up into a sitting position as Reid walked towards him. He tried to push away the niggling bit of awkwardness that continued to lurk at the back of his mind. This was Reid. Even if things were weird here, it wasn't enough to screw up the friendship they'd had for years. Right?

"How was breakfast?"

Reid shrugged in lieu of an answer at first. Breakfast was breakfast. Breakfast was boring and made that much more annoying than a school caf by the audience all around. Not to mention, a good number of the other people.

"You know how it is. Food. Eating. Waiting until dark so you can have your Power back again. The usual."

He wasn't exactly a believer in making good out of a bad situation. All he'd--they'd--ever done was make the bad situation go away.

"This place would be a hell of a lot easier to get away from in daylight if we had it back now," Tyler agreed with a frustrated sigh, casting a wistful glance at the wall that surrounded the field.

"Think Caleb and Pogue are out there somewhere?"

Two people Reid wouldn't mind having around right now.

"Where else would they be? Probably thinking... we're out on a joyride or something." Reid kept his eyes on the ball, tensing his hands and pressing the ball with his palms until it warped inward from the pressure. He didn't know. He didn't know a lot of things, like how he and Tyler had even got here.

But every day they were here was one day closer to Pogue's Ascension. And Caleb was already the man of the hour, how come he wasn't doing anything? It wasn't really his better sense that made him think that way.

"Look, Ty," he started, pausing to press his lips together. Something he should say, but didn't want to. Or maybe something he wanted to say, but couldn't. He breathed through his nose for a moment.

Tyler tore his eyes away from the wall, chewing on his lower lip. Th fact that he didn't know where they were - that he wasn't even entirely certain that out there was their town somewhere, and that Caleb and Pogue might be wondering where they were - worried him immensely. But he kept it to himself for the moment. He was sure Reid had probably thought of it, too. What was the point of voicing his fears and making it more real?

"Yeah?" he asked, lifting a hand to shade his eyes from the sun as he squinted up at the blond.

Blinking, Reid cast his gaze around for a minute before looking down at Tyler. Obviously all the weirdness was coming from him and only him--he hadn't ever really seen Tyler get weird on him instead, and Reid couldn't help but think that if he did, Reid probably wouldn't handle it well--but Tyler seemed blissfully ignorant of it a lot. Made him think most of it was all in his head.

Which it was, sort of, but like Power and gravity, it was still there even if it wasn't walking around with a sign.

Caleb had always been the delicate one of the group, so it wasn't like Reid was any good at addressing topics that made him uncomfortable. He didn't even know why it did.

He worked the ball between his hands for a little while longer. "This whole thing shouldn't get to us," Reid finally said. And by 'this whole thing' he didn't entirely mean the situation on a whole. And by 'shouldn't get to us' he didn't entirely mean the off chance of being driven to a nervous breakdown by nurses and monsters. "So..." He trailed off, flipping the ball in his fingers once more. Then he lobbed it at Tyler without warning. "So that's what I wanted to say."

Since Tyler was actually facing the right direction this time, he caught the ball with ease, his palms stinging a bit with the force of which Reid had lobbed it at him. he tucked it against his stomach, leaning on it as he rocked forward.

"Okay," he replied, to give a reply, to give him time to think of a better reply while his brain scrambled to figure out which whole thing - or just the whole thing in general - Reid was referring to. And whether the blond wanted him to agree or not. Conversations with Reid could, at times, be a veritable minefield.

"You're right," he finally answered, still squinting up at the blond. "It shouldn't. We've faced worse, right?" Had they? Maybe. But they'd never had to face it without their Power. Not really.

"Yeah." He scratched his head, shaking out his hair with his fingers. "Yeah." Sort not. Not really the same, at least with what he was talking about. But Tyler’s calmness just… made more sense than Reid’s not-total-calm. People and things didn’t come between them.

Ascensions and Chase Collins aside, anyway.

Outsiders didn’t come between them, and whatever outsiders had to say.

"Not that I’m in the habit of taking your advice," Reid added.

Tyler snorted in amusement, a reluctant grin slipping across his lips as he regarded the blond. "Of course not. What do I know?" he retorted, rolling his eyes and then grinning outright at Reid.

"Nothing," Reid told him.

He stepped closer to the other boy in one long stride, leaning down to ruffle Tyler's hair and push his head back at the same time, encouraging a flop back. Then he relented and straightened again, playful for the time being.

Tyler laughed and let himself be pushed, flopping backwards on the damp grass, arms flung wide. It was almost easy to pretend there was nothing wrong, like this. Like they were just goofing around as always back home. He wished the could keep pretending, but that was rather hard to do unless he kept his eyes closed.

"So you keep telling me," he replied, sounding bemused as he squinted one eye open to peer up at the blond. "But I think you know less than me, so where does that leave us?"

“Like hell I do,” said Reid. “You’re only worth listening to if I need to copy some homework. Not happening here.”

Although he joked about Tyler’s lack of street smarts (which might have been better coming from someone like Pogue than someone like Reid, who had traded in ‘common sense’ for more street smarts than was necessary for a rich kid in Ipswich), it was more like Reid just didn’t listen whether advice was good or bad. He liked to think Tyler only reached his full potential barricaded in a library.

He didn't feel like sitting, and instead scuffed his foot against some grass.

"Thank god," Tyler snickered. "If this place starts assigning us homework, I'm deciding it's official that somehow we've died and landed in hell."

It wasn't funny, not really, but it made it easier to deal with if he could at least laugh at it. He hated feeling like his hands were tied.

"So do you have any plans for tonight?"
