Nightshift 32: West Wing, North Hall 1-A

[From here]Tyki stepped into the hallway outside of the patient block, sweeping the beam of his flashlight around. As far as he could see, the hallway was completely empty. Not that the Noah minded; he was busy right now and any distractions would be way too bothersome ( Read more... )

Yue moved from the south hallway into the next one, which looked...well, more or less the same. This time, though, he caught sight of a flicker of light out of the corner of his eye, and when he glanced that direction his flashlight fell on a door just as it was closing.

After a quick check of the map, and mentally comparing this hall to the one he'd just been in, he decided that must be another block of patient rooms. He'd likely just seen a fellow patient moving on, but Yue still couldn't help but think about the warnings he'd been given and wonder at the apparent lack of danger so far. Waiting for something to happen was worse than it actually happening, sometimes.

Edgeworth aimed the flashlight beam low to the ground as he rounded the corner from one block to the next. This path was familiar; it seemed he had walked it every single night, save one, since he had been here.

As such, he wasn't really watching where he was going, aside from the flashlight beam on the ground, and didn't see the person standing in front of him. With a start, he walked right into the person, scalpels and notebook and radio falling from his pockets and hands.

"Ow - oh, Yue! I'm sorry, you'll have to forgive me for being so distracted. Are you all right?"

It had already been quite obvious that he'd been weakened in this place, but this was definitely a bad sign -- Yue hadn't even sensed another's presence until the man had bumped into him, at which point it was quite obvious that he was there. The guardian staggered forward a step to regain his balance, grip tightening around the bat's handle in automatic reaction to a potential threat before he realized it was no monster.

Warnings of patients under the staff's control made him hesitate for a second, but when he spoke Edgeworth certainly sounded like he had before. And he seemed quite apologetic about it all, and not intent on harming Yue. "I am unhurt," he replied, blinking down at the assortment of items the other man had dropped.

"That's good. Again, quite sorry about the, well..." He trailed off, too embarrassed to keep speaking. He bent down and began shuffling objects back into his pockets, being sure he hadn't broken the radio or any of the scalpels. All of those seemed in order, which was good. He didn't see the notebook, which had fallen into a spot of shadow.

"I'm glad to see you've found something to defend yourself with," Edgeworth said, eyeing the bat warily. "That's important. Also...what did you make of that intercom message?"

Yue glanced away briefly as Edgeworth gathered up his things, noting the presence of others in the hallway. It was good to see other patients out and about -- even if he wasn't technically with someone else, there were still others around, if something happened.

At mention of the bat, though, Yue shifted his hold on it slightly, sliding the end a little behind himself as though trying to hide it. "My roommate gave it to me," he said, dismissing the thing as unimportant. He didn't need the bat. Oh, no.

"I suspect many will be going to investigate the chapel." Again, disinterest in his voice; Yue had considered it, but felt he had other things more pressing to attend to. Nor did he entirely trust anything the Head Doctor said, anyway.

"Good," Edgeworth said. "I just hope you don't need it tonight."

He nodded at Yue's response. "I was wondering if anyone I knew would be going. I have business of my own to attend to tonight, and don't entirely trust that there will be no harm done, but I'm awfully curious.

Edgeworth looked around once more - that seemed to be everything he'd dropped. He still didn't see the notebook; it was too shadowed. "If you'll excuse me, I should get going - I have a friend to meet in one of the other hallways. Good luck in your excursion."

He bowed slightly, then walked off down the hallway.

It might have been interesting to investigate the chapel if he hadn't had anything better to do, but Yue only shrugged it off and turned away as Edgeworth took his leave. His attention was caught for a moment by the sound of movement, but it appeared to be just another patient moving past. Where were these monsters he'd been warned of? Yue breathed out a faint sigh and started to move on, then paused, frowned, and reached down to pick up the notebook lying on the ground. It certainly looked like Edgeworth's, and the attorney had dropped several things ( ... )
