Day 32: Lunch

May 20, 2008 08:37

Sanosuke hadn't quite been ready to part ways from Kenshin, but his nurse was insistent, and she was offering food. That second thing was what really got Sano off the couch and headed to the cafeteria. And at the very least, the thing about Okita had been settled, which meant the fighter could focus on his meal ( Read more... )

Yuber entered the cafeteria after speaking with Logan. It had been unfortunate to hear that they’d yet to find any information concerning the buffer placed on their abilities, but the knight had hardly thought they’d find anything after one evening. It was a start though, and even if he wasn’t called to guide the motley group of fools tonight, Yuber knew without a doubt that the little hairy man would keep to their word.

That was one thing he rather enjoyed about ‘heroes’. They were always so predictable and honourable in that sense, but that was something that often worked in his favour so he wasn’t one to complain.

His gaze passed over the room a moment later before falling on one familiar figure. He’d been indisposed the previous night and had been unable to confer with Zelnick. With a smirk tugging on his lips, the Black Knight wove his way through the cafeteria until he came across Zelnick’s table. Pulling out the chair opposite the other patient, Yuber slid himself in to it before greeting the other. “I do hope the previous night went well for you.”

Zelnick waved a greeting with one hand, setting down his food and swallowing the last bite he had taken. "I wish it had," he said, "but I never even made it to Usopp's room." He took a sip of his juice before continuing, "Admiral ZEX got attacked by an oversized insect, so I ended up taking care of him for the rest of the night. I guess it was, what, negative productivity? Lost too much time, gained nothing for it..."

He shrugged ruefully. "I was hoping to make up for it tonight. Obviously, I'll have to take the supplies from a couple nights ago to Usopp's room, but if you had any plans for resource gathering...?"

“I see,” He murmured. It appeared that the sole night he’d left the captain to himself they’d been attacked. It was almost an amusing concept to consider, but the only thing that held the knight back from showing such thing was the knowledge that his part of the contract between them was to protect Zelnick from such danger. While he could find ways to easily keep the contract between them if Zelnick attempted to break it off, Yuber doubted it would be necessary. Besides it was blazingly obvious to the knight that Zelnick, and ZEXs, was obviously in need to his fighting abilities.

“I might be in need to guide another patient to the pharmacy this coming evening, but that would depend on if the others who accompany him are ready for such a journey.” Yuber smoothly muttered as he relaxed back against his chair.

The thought of gathering further resources was somewhat appealing, but he’d managed to obtain quite a few interesting items throughout his duration here, and thought that anything further at this point might be a little overkill. “I believe for now we probably have enough to create some interesting items, but if you’re in need of it, I shall accompany you to Usopp’s room to make certain you reach it this time.”

"We have enough for interesting items, yeah, but not for gunpowder." Shrugging, he elaborated, "Personally, gunpowder's pretty high on my list of priorities," and... well... things that go 'boom'" (which he illustrated by fisting his fingers, then flicking them open) "are sounding better and better all the time.

"But I won't need an escort just to see Usopp." He laughed softly. "The Admiral should stay in his room tonight, so I'll only need to travel, what, a few doorways down from my room? If I can't make it that far, I'd be a pretty useless ally." Half-grinning, he finished up, "I'm sure Usopp can keep me busy without adventuring, too."

Glancing thoughtfully over at Zelnick at the mention of gunpowder, Yuber chuckled softly at their little demonstration before muttering. “Well one can hardly say no to such entertaining items.” Leaning forward in his seat, the Black Knight considered his options for the evening before offering. “My part of the contract expires once I’ve taken them to their room, but there is no guarantee how long such a trip will take; otherwise I would suggest continuing with the search.”

Nodding his head when it appeared that Zelnick wouldn’t be in need of such an escort, Yuber considered his options. “So you’re staying indoors with Usopp this evening?” If such a thing was true then it would at least make his part of their contract a little easier. “If that’s the case, then shall we continue on with our exploration tomorrow evening?”

"One really can't," he agreed, grinning. "Nothing like a little firepower at your disposal." All the gunpowder in the world wouldn't hold a candle to his Vindicator or his fleet, but he'd take what he could.

"I suppose so. Unless you're freed up early enough to make exploration a good idea. So I guess tomorrow is fi-- oh, wait." Zelnick frowned faintly. "I'm meeting someone else at the beginning of tomorrow night... We might get done quickly, or not, I'm not sure." Frown clearing up, he laughed sheepishly. "I need to get an appointment book for this place, seriously."

Yuber couldn’t agree more. It was only a pity that his Eightfold Rune was rather unavailable at present. Hopefully that would be something that will change soon enough, but that was something he’d simply have to wait for.

“Very well I shall keep that in mind.” He muttered. Knowing his luck lately in the halls, he doubted time would be much of an issue. Yuber would continue on with his own exploration until Zelnick was available; besides, there were still a number of angles he had yet to investigate.

Sitting back in his chair, Yuber gazed lazily around the cafeteria at all the other patients. He scanned each one for signs of injury and the like before his attention returned back to Zelnick. “I take it that ZEX’s recovery might take some time? He wasn’t too badly injured I hope.”

With a nod to acknowledge Yuber's acknowledgment, Zelnick ate another few bites while his ally surveyed the room.

"Not too horribly, but... last night he couldn't walk at all," he replied, waving the slice of whatever-it-had-been-called in a vague gesture. "And I know he fell down at breakfast when he tried walking again. He'll hurt himself even worse if he doesn't spend at least a little while off his feet." He didn't mention that ZEX had seemed overwhelmed by the pain of his wounds, last night; though he had a feeling that the VUX were generally thicker-skinned than humans, and ZEX had a perfectly good reason to be in a world of hurt, he had an even stronger feeling that the VUX pride he'd heard so much about was hurt just as badly by the pain. "With how fast things seem to heal here, though... He'll probably be out and about tomorrow, or the day after, if I'm any judge."

Yuber made a mental note about ZEX’s condition and worked it in to any possible scenarios for the coming evening. If ZEX is intelligent enough then he would allow himself to rest and recuperate from his injuries, but he’d found that most mortals didn’t submit to such logic. If not then it could jeopardise his current contract with Zelnick which would be rather unfortunate. With some luck, though, ZEX’s movements will hardly be a concern to him.

“As long as he allows that injury to heal properly then nothing else matters,” While it might have sounded much like a reply of concern, it hardly was when in regards to Yuber. The knight simply thought of the situation in the terms of: if it wasn’t battle ready or useful to him, then it was simply of no concern to the Black Knight and regarded as nothing but dead weight.

“I would suggest, however, that even if we are unable to meet we should still have our own set tasks given to ourselves. Doing so will optimise our chances of collecting the right materials and such.” Leaning back to ponder over his words, Yuber remained quiet for the moment before he muttered, “I can speak with Usopp after lunch and get the little pirates take on the situation.”
